I've had SSD since my childhood (left side), and only understood what was going on at the age of 8. Before that, I used to think everybody could only hear that way and I would get confused when people would tell me they can locate people and sounds (still believe they have superpowers).
Such a great tatoo Rosie, love it !

Same here, born with SSD (right ear). Use to tell my friends that locating sound is superhuman in my world 🙂 also, lots of noise further lowers my hearing capacity, people that know automatically walks on my left side (such as wife), arriving early at meetings is important so i can strategically sit for discussion purposes, etc etc
Now planning to get hearing aid - we’ll see how it goes 👍

Same! I'm deaf in my right ear and I thought everyone had only one functional ear when I was little. I didn't get my hearing loss confirmed until I was 15 because I was afraid of getting in trouble for being deaf (?!?!) so I lied on the hearing tests.

I had to give music up because of my SSD, and I have a lot of social anxiety when I have to go in crowded places, especially if I have to meet new people. Throughout all my life there were always situations where people thought I was weird or stupid, but the truth is that I couldn't hear them and I was too afraid to tell. Sometimes I think how different my life would be if I could hear normally.

I'm a SSD from my left ear, I don't know but I get very emotional while I think about my deafness and I don't able to overcome it. It makes me so heartbreaken. But it's good toh hear other people thought and see how they handle their daily life and make me go. Maybe one day I'll able to start live happily with my disability.

Hi, I've also had SSD from my right ear, like you, since I was very young. I understand the struggles, however, I also live a wonderful life and I'm even a musician. I've found that the best way to deal with it is to tell everyone you're close too so they understand that sometimes you might not hear them. I tell people that whilst they all have 2 microphones, I have 1. 🙂 All the best.

I'm 18 now! And idk I didn't tell anyone about it yet. My friends at school when I tell them to repeat themselves would be like they gonna laugh at me for not hearing them correctly. Like I mishear words and sentences and they be like laughing. It's kind of sad when they do that so I didn't tell them anything about my SSD. I understand them tho, maybe they didn't mean it and they find it funny when I mishear things :(

I was born with SSD in my right ear, it wasn't picked up until around 5/6 years old when we would have a nurse come to our school and do a hearing test. A little wooden hammer was given to use when you were able to hear the pitched sounds, I just never used it on my right ear and I was shouted at for presumably playing up. Only recent in the last 5/6 years I get tinnitus in my good ear, must be great to hear in Stereo.

Just had my left ear wrecked by some dickheads practical joke at work. Hopefully it will recover, but I can vouch for how annoying single sided deafness is, even when its only moderate hearing loss. Your whole world is lopsided. It's hard to put it into words, but you just kind of take symmetry for granted when it comes to your sensory awareness. It is an annoyance that is with you every waking moment, that nags at your calm all day long, and you have to start adjusting the orientation of your body to compensate... which just reminds you of the annoyance. I will admit that my temper is shorter, and I angry more easily as a result.
Thank you for sharing your story.

      Sorry to read your story.
Is there no treatment for this? In the Netherlands they sometimes give you high dose of prednisolon with sudden deafness or after a trauma.
Hope it will come back for you; i had a hearing loss after a tumor. I was in shock. The world sounds weird with one ear. But the hearing is now better.... .
People should know that a joke (with ears) is far, far behind fun: it' s...🥵. Hope they realise that!
      Bye from the Netherlands.

I went deaf on the left side as I child so I experienced normal hearing before losing hearing in my left ear. I can tell you that this is a significant disability and, to make it worse, it is an invisible disability. CROS hearing aids help a lot in everyday situations, but are hopeless in loud environments.

    • @stephenbrookes8681

@@Sweden-wd5lg the hearing aid on the deaf side is a microphone that transmits sound from the deaf side to a second aid on the good side. You still only hear in one ear, but it reduces the 'head shadow' effect

Same problems with me, whats worse is that I play the guitar and have to sit to the left of my brother so that I can hear his playing. In fact I play without actually hearing much of the music? and review it by playing back recordings, this gives me a guide as to volume settings when playing in the future. It may sound odd? but I play by rythm and timing. I have a hearing aid but it overloads with the frequencies of the music? My right ear runs at 75 percent, my left ear approx 15 percent? socially it causes many problems? difficult to join in conversations, miss a lot which is said, may end up laughing at the wrong time. I find it easier not to bother in the first place some times? I wear headphones at home, often missing people at the door, which can be awkward.

I've had my first hearing problem when I was 9 yo. At that time, I always heard a ringing on my right ear and I couldn't hear on this side. But after I went to see the nose and throat Doctor, this ear came back to normal only for a few days. Since that I've had SSD. Now I'm 22 yo and I hardly can't tell people about my condition, and my parents doesn't really want to hear (care) about this. Is there something that can make me feel easy to tell people about my condition? Cuz I'm always struggling to find from where the voice sounds or in a crowded place. I want to be honest with myself and everyone...

Yep, learn to play music. I've had SSD all my life. Lost it at a young age, and have since been enamored with music. My parents never understood what was going on until I was 13, after numerous doctor visits, and I still remember the day they cried when the specialists confirmed my condition. Since then I've lived an amazing life, and I tell everyone about my SSD when in loud situations like restaurants or at work. Living with SSD has taught me how important and wonderful communication is.
