This song is so powerful, it has become somewhat an anthem during this Crisis/Pandemic in the Netherlands. I recommend their "Thuissessie" (Home/Quarantine Version) to actually see the bandmembers and this remarkable singer.
This ballad is about loneliness. But “Soldier On” is also about courage. It's an ode to anyone who dares to stand out and claim their place in this fear-ridden world we're living in. Marcel Veenendaal, the lead singer of this Dutch band DI-RECT says: “It is an encouragement to people who are not really heard. Everyone carries their crotch and their own luggage with them.” Therefore, 'Soldier On' resonates on many layers, and that it's OK to feel the way you feel among all the fun in life, according to him. The record was released in February 2020. According to Direct, it's 100% a coincidence that the song was released during this time of crisis. The lyrics are: Soldiering on woman, you're always true to form Just keep on pushing your shopping cart through the storm Most people buy it, but you feel it's one that we can no longer afford You stopped believing in our story, you say it's way too short Ain't nobody out there as brave as you, you're holdin' your own A million different voices that are trying to break you just listen to one The one that's inside you, and soldier on You're governed by the winds that reign You armed yourself with a flower chain and a broken cane Nobody cares how you feel like they think your heart doesn't bleed the same We wouldn't hear the truth if it cried in our faces Ain't nobody out there as brave as you, you're holdin' your own A million different voices that are trying to break you Just listen to one The one that's inside you, and soldier on
Tim Akkerman was indeed the frontman of Di-rect, but he left the band to pursue another musical direction. Marcel Veenendaal is the guy who you hear now. He is now the frontman of Di-rect. Both are good singers in my opinion.
I thoroughly enjoy this song, though I personally prefer DI-RECT as it was in the early 2000's. They've changed their lead singer in 2009, from Tim Akkerman to Marcel Veenendaal. Their style changed too, from that point onward, from a more rock (and occassionally (pop)punk) style, to, well, this. And as good as this song is, I just prefer their older, rawer style. To really drive home the difference, try listening to (old, Tim Akkerman fronted) DI-RECT's "Rollercoaster". That is pretty much the furthest away you can get from this song within DI-RECT's oeuvre.😅 For a more representative idea of what the old DI-RECT was like (since "Rollercoaster" is, as I said, pretty much on the extreme end of their combined works), you might try "She", "Don't Kill Me Tonight", "Inside My Head" or "A Good Thing". Or "Adrenaline" for what may well be the strongest early 2000's vibes you'll ever get from a song. 😂
