I love how into it Liberty DeVitto is, especially around the 3:10 mark, where he's singing the lyrics and rubs his left fingers up in the air when Billy is singing about getting paid. The only drummer I know who is more animated is Mick Fleetwood, whose facial expressions and body language make every simple 4/4 beat he plays look like he's barreling through a Keith Moon solo at double speed.
One of my all time favorites as few were telling the truth about a performer's life at the time for fear of being blacklisted. I admired your bravado to tell the truth but the real jolt for me here is that I recognize the band! It's the same crew that played West Palm Beach, FL in 76 when I came to see Billy. The show was the best that I'd seen all year but I suspect what most folks remember is when some fool threw a cup at the stage nearly hitting Billy. Oh boy, the New Yorker showed up then! He yelled at the audience to give up the culprit, then dragged out the very tall Liberty DeVito from behind the drums asking if somebody wanted to throw stuff at them now! The drummer would be happy to 'talk' to them! A true showman, no question!
Tom Petty has an album titled The Last DJ that also features numerous songs critiquing the music industry, if you’re interested. It got tragically low critical reviews, despite the fact that it has some fantastic music.
@@ChillyCucumber and there is that blacklist! The first Beatles and Rolling Stones albums got reviews now viewed as hilarious. Petty was a helluva writer and an excellent performer. Will check it out!
@isimensministry I had the privilege of blowing my last 5k promoting this concert at Connecticut College's Palmer Auditorium in December 1976. Still remains a highlight of my life. Greatness was all over the board and a few months later The Stranger came out with Just the Way You Are. There will never be another like him.
I had never before heard these first 40 seconds that precede the opening synth riff we all know and love, but it really seems to set the tone for the entertainer, nice if it had been included in the original. I love this performance!
Good version but I prefer the Carnegie Hall 1977 version which includes this extra verse: I am the entertainer I'm dressed in the style I wear all kinds of sparkles I flash the crowd my smile But when the night is over And I stand without my clothes Perspiration stains and varicose veins My eyes look shot My belly's got a pot And there's a pimple on my nose
Amazing to remember that such a successful musician was on his 4th album and still only had a few ties and shirts to work with for a photo shoot!! 😎 Everyone pays their dues, anyone who is worth it anyway. Message for the dreamers of 2022.🎶🎵🎶
Absolutely one of my favourite performers! Was playing my very old CD of his Best Hits - had to come and watch this one! So many songs sound personal - great ballads!
Billy was not in the Military, if that service you're referring to. Although he was of age to be drafter for Vietnam, he had a medical deferment due to a knee injury.
Romans 10 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith which we preach): 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, "Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame." 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. 13 For "whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved."//
Young and quirky Billy Joel is the best Billy Joel.
Yes.
wow, this guy's good. hope he makes it big someday!
Well I'm sure that he could be a music star
If he could get out of this place,
nah its just this modern day "sgi" they use in movies
the exact same words we said back in 1976 wow!
Ya think????
electricmohair 🤣🤩❣️💓❤️💔💕💗💗💗💗💗💘👄💋💋💞💘❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💙🖤💜🧡💛💚👁️🗨️👁️👅👄
Man that Martin guitar he's strumming sounds fantastic!
Liberty DeVito...

Hell of a drummer...
Billy doing his Keith Emerson impression. Nice...
his live versions are always the best 😍 i can’t get enough
Great singer and great song XX
I love this song but specially every scene why i can see the most enthusiastic drummer in rock history........called Libertry DeVitto!
Underrated song
Still one of the worlds greatest song writers and performers almost fifty years on.✌👍💚
No one can improvise and scat like Billy when he's in the mood!

That drummer is having a great time!

So much energy and perfection. That rhythm section is world class.
The one person theat disliked fight me

Reminds me when Rockdale Texas got George Strait for their fair right before Amarillo by Morning put him on the map
I miss the original band..😢
Timeless

He had to keep it to 3:05.
One of the best Billy Joel songs in my opinion
I don’t know what it is about this song but it’s probably Billy’s most feel good get moving song in his catalogue, adore it
This is the best version of the song with the extended intro.
Great singer. Great piano player. Great entertainer, then and now. Been loving his music since 1972.
Just got on the bus a couple months ago at the age of 17, he’s really something
First time I see Billy playing synthesizers.
This guy is a Prog Rock Champion!!!
Is he playing the Arp Prosoloist?
Listen to his Attila album.
Rocket Man no synths on Atilla. Just a distorted Hammond Organ with no Leslie (plus drums). Awesome stuff.
Christian Thompson, True. I was just pointing out his keyboard playing. He is amazing at a young age.
Great song
Love You tube My StereoNO Expensive Player Needles to buy ever again!!!!!
Any minimoog aficionados able dial up those exact settings on this song and for Great Suburban Showdown wanna share? :-)
Billy Joel back in 1976 during the tour of the album Turnstiles.
Yep. Caught that tour too in West Palm Beach, FL. What a show!
Every line is the truth.
Good version but I prefer the Carnegie Hall 1977 version which includes this extra verse: I am the entertainer
I'm dressed in the style
I wear all kinds of sparkles
I flash the crowd my smile
But when the night is over
And I stand without my clothes
Perspiration stains and varicose veins
My eyes look shot
My belly's got a pot
And there's a pimple on my nose
That's not The Entertainer. The Entertainer as I remember it hasn't got any lyrics.
Yeah I had heard that one. I think he added it for kicks for the concerts. It wasn't on the studio album.
Killlller drummer that Liberty deVito - such a groove-merchant - absolute joy to watch!
He's the Animal from the Muppets :)
That is the Turstiles outfit!
Amazing to remember that such a successful musician was on his 4th album and still only had a few ties and shirts to work with for a photo shoot!! 😎 Everyone pays their dues, anyone who is worth it anyway. Message for the dreamers of 2022.🎶🎵🎶
The amount of talent this lad has is off the scale.Best piano player/singer/songwriter there has ever been.Saw him live twice.
This song brings me good emotions, and good memories. I wish the artists could live as much as the greatness of their art.
It's hard to believe that I'm 13 and heard him on Jan 18 of this year in Orlando.
The piano sounds like Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer”
If you mute the video, sure
Some songs just stay with you. This is one of them.
This song is such a hoot. Glad I'll finally get to see Billy on stage soon... 43 years after this video XD
Great song, great Billy Joel ....such talent!
Excelente Calidad :3
This concert is commonly listed as being performed at UConn, but it was at Connecticut College in New London.
Absolutely one of my favourite performers! Was playing my very old CD of his Best Hits - had to come and watch this one! So many songs sound personal - great ballads!
I tell people at work that you are unique in that you never had a bad song. This is awesome, sir!!
Russel Javors
So, in the song he says he "laid all kinds of girls." Is this autobiographical?
Nah, is just the character of the song. He said that the song is a critic to the music standards at that time.
Not many guys would complain about that, though.
BTW, I was joking a bit.
Best ever
Such a good song, so well performed.
Such a good song I think other younger kids should listen to the oldies because their the best
💗❤️💞
That synth line.
Liberty Devito apocalyptic beast
