@@sambo5404 I'm not familiar with the drummers Billy has played with since Liberty. Obviously they're all pros and good or Billy wouldn't play with them. But there's just something about Liberty. The parts he created. The attitude he brings. Just perfect for Billy's music!!!
@@mjm5081 Yes, I agree. Liberty had power and his perfect hard hitting parts (fills and backbeat) are all his. It helped make a troubadour into a rocker which drew me in much more than just the singer/songwriter thing which obviously Billy is one of the world's best at.
They just released 4 songs (ballad of Billy, summer highland, new york state and souvenir) from this on new digital only release 50 years of the piano man. Would love for them to release the full show if they have it...
The way I remember it they actually filmed three days. One was the live concert and the others were just two days of filming all the songs so they could use the best versions of them
please upload the original source of this and the old grey whistle test from 1978. I feel the audio of the restored clips is compressed and there is a huge volume gap between the two. you can hear this in all the gaps of the original source and the official clips. when the officially remastered it they dialed down the entertainer half way though and completely squashed the dynamics and made the song quieter. beautiful work with what you've done. it looks fantastic and sounds fantastic but i would love the original of both please :)
Thanks so much for sharing this. Also too, the Mexico City concert from the Storm Front tour in 1991 was recorded and broadcast live on TV. Not sure if you have that yet?
@@MatthewBillyJoelBootlegs There's a snippet of the concert on a documentary too about Billy, so it's definitely out there. I was also told that some of the Australian concerts in 06 and 08 were recorded too. The official release of Christmas in Fallujah was from the last concert in Sydney.
Kinda reminds me of the Live from MSG show where a few songs were just randomly cut. I wish we had a soundboard recording. Something tells me Ain't No Crime and or Weekend Song were played. Regarding this show and also the MSG show, do you think Columbia Records (or whatever company) has the full shows in tact?
I think that yes, but it's rare. The HD release is EXACTLY the same as 1977, so, that's rare. Same edit, same songs, but the only think is that this is in HD. Maybe the soundboard is in somewhere, but this can be only recorded as a promo, like Sparks Club in 1981.
i think he played a bechstein.he also used the same piano in the old grey whistle, the keyboard was a memorymoog. He later used baldwin grands, and later used steinways. yes, his early pianos were awesome
@@katiegrundle9900 there is something about it though. you can hear it very loud and clear in his solos, especially at 26:07 when he rolls down. it has sort of tone to it and i cannot put my finger on it. it could also just be a recording thing, but i feel like that is unlikely. thanks
This was recorded at Connecticut College Palmer Auditorium in New London, CT. I have the original contract as I promoted the concert! A great early representation of a major artist! There will never be another like him.
Thanks for this. He’s obviously massively talented, and I’ve been a fan for years, but Liberty’s stories in the doc “Hired Guns” about him has really shaded my opinion of him as a person. I was a young teenager when this concert happened, and ironically I’m from Allentown, PA. But I can’t deny that his music has brought me many hours of joy and for that I’m thankful. Seeing him here (especially after the recent release of the ‘Turn The Lights Back On’ video) is very moving.
Absolutely a gem. This is, now that I've found it, one of my favorite Billy concerts along with the BBC one which I believe is several years earlier with just his original core band augmented here by Cannata and Emerson. That core band was a real fit I always thought, though Cannata became quite indispensable I'd have to say. I guess Mark Riveria at some point took Cannata's place while it seems the others were retired as Billy's band, much to many of us fan's regret. RIP Doug, you are forever missed. Liberty you are the John Bonham of propelling Billy into more of a rocker and for that I still say you are the best drummer Billy ever had.
Some do say that Nocturne is not a very original piece because it sounds too much like a Chopin bootleg. But Chopin cannot sue from the grave, so we're good. 🎶🎵🎶
Jazz, folk…he can do it all. He’s a man of many voices besides his own. I can hear Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ray Charles. Not sure who the gravelly voice is. His songwriting is incomparable. Love him. Not sure if he loves himself and knows how special he is. He sure loves music.
Interesting version of Piano Man…left out the verse about Paul and Davey 😳. Thanks for posting this. So great. Started listening to him in high school right when this was recorded but didn’t see him until MSG in 2019. Would love to have seen him back in the day.

I don't think I've seen a concert of Billy Joel's that isn't great, but just curious that Piano Man was a bit shorter than usual, when he gets to John the bartender he left out the bit where John says "Bill I believe this is killing me as the smile ran away from his face, I'm sure I could be a movie star if I could get away from this place", and then he skips over "Davy, whose still in the navy, and probably will be for life". :(
He used to play Angry Young Man with such a furious tempo. Fantastic.
You ain't lying, that's a hell of a way to start a show with your pants on fire.
It was worth the price of the ticket just to watch Liberty DeVitto.
I can't imagine a better drummer for Billy!!!

How is it possible that so many great songs can come from the mind and heart of just one man?
Amazing footage of the early hungry years!!
And this is before The Stranger and Glass Houses (my two favorite of his albums along with Turnstiles but that had just come out)
He’s a national treasure. Elvis who?
For sure. There’s no one like him.

Thanks Billy, four your músic, your touch, you are an artist!
Has to be one of the earliest performances with Liberty, Javers, Cannata, and Doug.

This is a great performance from 45 years ago in Connecticut, as Billy had a great band onstage with him. Doug Stegmeyer, rest in peace.
I’m new with bill Joel trying to discover his music
“Summer, Highland Falls” and “Souvenir” from this show was released on the rare “Souvenir” LP from 1977.

Which one? There's hundreds of Noctrines.
