    Your explanation seems to mainly apply if one is looking for a massive "layer" of a specific rock.
    It falls apart when most rocks I see weighing a few pounds down to pebbles are obviously a combination of many different types, directions, hardness (in some cases) that have clearly molded together somehow. I am not talking about "conglomerate" (?) I am talking about hard agate like, multi colored, rocks with multi directional lines, (some lines thick, some thin) in millimeters. That just don't seem to neatly fit any specific category.
    I hope you know what I'm trying to explain, because I've learned so much from you sharing your knowledge, (that has taught me proper ID of so many rocks) yet these I've tried to describe above just blows my mind and reminds of how much I Don't know... Sorry for lengthy comment, any input or direction you might share would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

      It sounds like you have sedimentary features preserved in agate, in which case all the agate would be a single mappable formation.
