Hey Andrew! I have bought X18 mixer for my band and I didn't know how to set it up properly. Your videos really help with all this set-up and configuration. Thank you so much for the work you've done!
Thanks, Andrew - Scenes, Shows and snapshots had mystified me ever since I bought my XR-18 three years ago. But I have a good handle on it now, as a result of your very thorough explanation!
Good. They are confusing, particularly because not all of them were a thing when the board first came out, and some of them were added later through software updates.
Garry Wiseman you're welcome. The video arose out of my own confusion and some misleading statements I made on a previous video due to my ignorance. Hopefully it sets things right.
Andrew Bellous you answer questions that Behringer’s tutorials miss and their documentation doesn’t cover. Thanks for the service to other audio technicians.

@AndrewBellous - switching from an defective XR18 to a new XR18. Please tell me if this is right. In my old XR18, save a scene to my iPad using Mixing Station, then Load that scene that is in my iPad Using Mixing Station to my new XR 18. Thank you.
I use one of those mixers (I use Soundcraft Ui24R) for my band. So in order for me to have all the mix settings, effects, volumes, Aux sends for our in ears, etc for the different venues we play, I should record each venue in Snapshots, right? I don't need scenes or shows (or in Soundcraft's case, "queues"). I should have the saves like for example... "Venue A", "Venue B", etc etc, right? And next time I go back to play in Venue A, I just recall the "Venue A" Snapshot, without the need to have any scenes or shows. Am I correct? Thanks in advance for the video and the explanation. :)
On the XR18, a snapshot and a scene are the same thing, but one is internal within the device (snapshot) while the other is an external file saved to a computer (scene). A show is a set of scenes saved together on a computer. Using snapshots in a live setting is much faster and the preferred method.
Hello, thanks for the steps covered. By any chance, do you have knowledge about how to load snapshots automatically (e. g. through a script) from a PC? We have a fixed setup for two different groups of people using the same hall and the PC is always connected and it would cut out the extra repetitive step of opening the X-Air App, selecting the snapshot and hitting go. Mahalo
super video! can you let the behringer startup with a show or scene? so that what happens before doen'st matter. when you startup the behringer it will always starts with the right show
Yes you can. Unfortunately, I no longer have access to this device to be able to review and describe that process, but you can do it. I remember that much. You save to your hard drive and then can import from your hard drive to a different device.
Great video, thanks for it. I have a few questions: 1) Do I understand correctly that the scene and show are only stored in the client device (tablet, PC) and the snapshots directly in the mix repository? 2.) I understand that a show is actually a set of scenes. But what about snapshots? Are the snapshots part of the scene (can I have different snapshots in each scene), or do the spashots stand completely outside the scene? Thank you very much!
Functionality was added as a software upgrade, which makes this subject very confusing. Originally, information could only be stored locally on the device. Then the ability to save to a computer was added. A scene is a saved bank of settings. A show is a collection of scenes, and a snapshot is a scene saved externally. I think. I can't remember which is which. I may be mixing up scenes and snapshots.
Great video, but you didn't show anything about how to save and recall snapshots. You only covered scenes and shows. And I think you intermixed your terminology, because you initially said snapshots are limited to 64, but scenes are unlimited (@2:44). But then later in the video, when talking about scenes, you say you are limited to only 64 scenes (@6:50). So..... i am confused about which it is. and I still don't know how to save and recall a snapshot.....
Yeah. That is confusing. They created the device with snapshot functionality, and then realized they should probably have made a way to save that information. They added shows and scenes later as a software update. It was really confusing, and I probably misstated the situation trying to keep it all in my head. Sorry. A Scene is a saved snapshot. A show is a collection of scenes. Near as I remember, anyway. I haven't actually had my hands on one of these in a while.
Thanks for a detailed, organized presentation. I really struggling with scribble strips settings. Are those properties embedded into snapshots, scenes or shows, or is that set of properties a separate entity altogether?
I believe that they are their own thing, and that they don't follow saved settings, but it's been a couple of years since I've worked with one of those boards, so I may not be remembering clearly.
Sometimes when I try to load my snapshots, the information doesn't completely load up,. If I switch back and forth, sometimes they will load correctly, sometimes not. What is this a product of? I only have about 6 snapshots saved, I wouldn't think it would be a big deal.
Hi, nice video, thanks. Does this mixer will need an app connected to play if everyday I switch the unit on/off for the same setting and same input and output connected. Suppose for a fixed installation for prayer. Will the mixer play from last setup without app? Thanks
The mixer will play from the last setup without connecting an application. However, there's a setting to auto-mute the outputs after power loss. In order to boot up the mixer and begin using without any human intervention, you would need to disable this "mute-on-power-up" setting.
I do not if my xr18 has any problem, switching between shows, channels has the same name always, if i change a channel's name, it stay with the same name if i change to another show, it is very frustrating
Yeah, I found the same thing. I was preparing materials for the church where I installed this board, and threw the videos online in case anyone else found them useful. Glad to see that's proving true :)
My question is about how to transfer scenes between Android devices. I think that in the PC, the scenes are saved as .scn files and you can designate where to save them. But how does this work between Android devices and perhaps even between Android devices and a PC/Mac.
I no longer have access to the board, and I've never done what you're suggesting. But, you could load a scene into the XR18 and then save it with the phone or computer you want to save that scene to. It's a little clunky, but it should work. Saving from computer to computer is easy, you just email the file it saves to your local machine.
Hi Andrew. Our XR18 lost connection to our router and thus all of our devices at a show. When that happened the FOH speakers cut out so there was no sound, which was of course disastrous and embarrassing. What did we do wrong? What happens with the XR18 when nothing is connected to it? I was under the impression that it would just continued outputting at the settings it was at before losing connection the the devices. If we do lose connection I wouldn’t really mind as long as the mixer continued to output the setting we dialled in at soundcheck!
When the device loses connection, it should continue with the same settings as its last received command. That means that it should still output audio at the same level. The problem then is turning it down if there's an issue that arises. Given what you're describing, I would guess that the issue was with the device itself glitching somehow. I've not seen the behaviour you've described before, and would guess that the router losing connection was not a fault in the router but some unexpected even that caused the mixer itself to stall. If you unplug the physical cable to the mixer, you wouldn't lose sound, just control.
I'm using the iPad app (latest as of June 2019) Maybe I don't understand how to save shows (since there's no save button on either iPad or Mac app) When I make a new show and make changes, then load a previous show, THEN go back to my new show, the original settings aren't there. All I see are the settings from the previous show. Lots of videos out there but the software versions are 3-5 years old. My assumption is to: Make a new show, name it and press load make my adjustments as need. I should then be able to choose a different show, press load and see it's different channel names/settings etc. When I choose my new show again and press load, I expect to see the settings for my new show. This is not happening. All I see are the previous shows now in my new show? I must be doing something wrong, and if someone can educate me, please do : ) The only way I can get this to work is to use the Mac app (laptop version), make my changes and overwrite the current show, or go to another show, make changes and overwrite it. Maybe the changes are being saved as I make them? Very confusing.
Yes. It is very confusing. When the device was first released, it didn't have any of this functionality. That was released later. First they created 'scenes', which allowed you to save settings, then they created 'shows', which seem to only be able to save from a desktop, not from the apps (as of when I last looked at the app - I no longer have access to the board that I made these videos on). it's confusing and not how I would have designed it. Probably not how they would have designed it if they hadn't added this functionality after the fact, but had designed the boards with this in mind from the beginning.
I'm not sure that's possible. I think at the present time you can only save to a computer, not an android device. Sorry. There may be an update at some point which adds that functionality. Similar features have been added before.
would appreciate if you actually click on the save menu and show us how the 'slots' interface really looks like. That was the main point of this video, isn't it?

thanks for filling a big hole in music groups product documentation here
No problem.
Excellent. Concise, and clarifies a host of confusions (if host is a collective noun!) on Xair anomalies. Thank you, Andrew.
Garry Wiseman you're welcome. The video arose out of my own confusion and some misleading statements I made on a previous video due to my ignorance. Hopefully it sets things right.
This is easily one of the best YT tutorials as you explain a complex concept very well. Behringer should pay you or send you gear!!!
Thanks. I'll let them know :)

Thanks so much for this video! FYI, I checked and Shows are available on the iPad as well for anyone wondering.
Cool. It's been a while since I made that video and I expect that there have been a number of upgrades since. Thanks for the update :)
Dude, thank you so much for making this video! It cleared up all of my confusion.
Glad to hear it :)
Thanx! Snapshots and Scenes differences never was explained in M Air manual, unfortunately.
No, they didn't have both when it was released. I think it was Scenes that were included in an update that gave added functionality later on.

I think so, but I'm not a Mac guy, I'm a PC.

Huge help! I can let our two drummers have their own presets using this.
Cool.

I don't have expertise in that sort of programming, sorry. I wouldn't think it was easy to do, if it were possible.
super video! can you let the behringer startup with a show or scene? so that what happens before doen'st matter.
when you startup the behringer it will always starts with the right show
I don't think that's an option, but I haven't had access to one of these for some time.
Can I save a scene from one X18 to my computer, load it on some external drive (such as a flash drive) and import it back into a different X18?
Yes you can. Unfortunately, I no longer have access to this device to be able to review and describe that process, but you can do it. I remember that much. You save to your hard drive and then can import from your hard drive to a different device.

Superbly clear and helpful...why didn't Behringer employ you to make their tutorial videos?
Glad you found it useful. I'd take a check if Behringer offered :)
Thank you very much for this tutorial! Ciao from Italy!
Hello back to Italy. Glad it helped :)

Like TrackFourMusic said.

It should be the same from when you turn it off to when you start it up again. You may want to have your unit looked at.
really appreciate this video, the documentation available from Behringer on this is awfully lacking. Just got a XR16 and was lost on how to use it.
Yeah, I found the same thing. I was preparing materials for the church where I installed this board, and threw the videos online in case anyone else found them useful. Glad to see that's proving true :)

this is even helpful for the current Xair iPad version! Thanks
However , now you ARE able to use the SHOW function with the Mac/iPad versions
Glad you found it helpful :)
Can you select a Snapshot with a midi program change like on the X32?
I haven't done that, but I expect you can.
Thanks man, this made my job easier
Excellent :)

Happy to help.

I've never used the iPad app. Thanks for letting me know ☺️

Cool
Indeed. Cool.
You need to actually use the app and build scenes then a show.
OK. I never really used shows, as there wasn't a need for it. Thanks for the clarifications.
