I've always been curious about the Jag-Stang so when Fender announced a fresh run I jumped on it and asked for one. Thankfully they humored my request because I FLIPPIN LOVE THIS GUITAR!

So cool to see a video that shows the Jangstang doing something other than the grunge standards. Sounds great as a surf guitar and looks killer. Great video Ryan, secretly waiting for all the hate though.
ua-cam.com/video/0GuY0cvPWjQ/v-deo.html
It’s a crime to hate on this haha
simply because you did not play only nirvana, this is the greatest and most in depth show-off of this guitar on the internet. but like forreal FORREAL thank you
fkn love nirvana but ya'll follow what i mean
100%
It's funny how Jag-stangs in isolation just look weirdly warped, but as soon as somebody is playing them, they look awesome.
I personally feel like it’s the opposite
I’m really loving this recent zeitgeist of “Guitarists re-examining conventional wisdom. “ Over the past 6 months, I’ve learned that I’ve been using the wrong string gauges for the last 20 years, the telecaster is the ideal guitar for heavy metal, and the Jagstang is an excellent surf guitar.
What makes a Telecaster good for metal? I've heard they are very versatile and I've heard Rick Beato play "Djent" on one. But what makes them good for metal.
I've never owned one. One day I will. But your post piqued my interest.
@@ska4dragons Mine seems to respond well to aggressive playing. But I’m far from being able to play actual metal.
@@ska4dragons The bridge pup on a tele really cuts in high gain. Need to tame the noise, of course. Look for Jake Saravay's "Tuned my Telecaster to Drop F#"
@@ska4dragons check out Baroness, see what you think
I've got an Indio Tele copy that I modified with a Hot Rail Bridge pup, tune it to drop-D and it's a crunch machine. Metal, hardcore, punk....it rocks any and all of them.
You constantly remind me that we’re supposed to be *playing* guitar, and that’s why I enjoy your videos so much. There’s a playful exuberance of a child that comes out, especially when you find a piece of gear you really like. It’s fun to watch and it’s contagious.
Hey, sometimes the right gear can inspire you to play more. I just got a new pedal thats got me picking up my guitar 10 or 12 times/day lol. I mean, I already couldn't go more than 12 hours without playing it at least a couple of times but my dang fingers were hurting the other night and that hasn't happened in like 17 months and I've only been playing for maybe 19 months?
Try this: take the wiggle stick off entirely, and use the heel of your hand on the end of the “cigar.” Been playing my 75 Mustang that way forever. Works great for a little flourish here and there.
That is a great tip. Thanks
I’m new but also figured this out cuz the handle comes off
Only bummer with this version is the exclusion of the "Designed By Kurt Cobain" decal on the back of the headstock.
First world problems
How could Fender omit a detail like that? Those Bastards!
@@shckltnebay Problems are problems; they aren't more real or less annoying depending on the severity of it's impact on life.
it's BEHIND the headstock, no one would ever give a shit
They had to keep the cost down!
I've owned one of these for 17 years, and it's great for surf, shoegaze, Sonic Youthfulness, just covers so much ground. The out of phase setting is so great and really nails that "Pet Sounds" guitar sound, and I mean the song, not the album.
I like to drop a small nylon ball into the set screw hole before tightening down the tremolo. It eliminates metal on metal contact wear that leads to loosening, holds it in just as well, and makes the swiveling of the arm much smoother. Highly recommend fans of the dynamic vibrato try it out! I'm pretty sure McMaster Carr sells set screws with nylon tips formed right on the screw, but I've got a ton of the little balls, so I haven't ever bothered checking to confirm.
Sold! All of the other reviews were "meh" at best as they just played some Heart-Shaped Box and called it a day. This might be one of the most versatile guitars and reviews i have seen.
The jagstang is very underrated in my opinion. I've owned the same one for almost 20 years now and it's always done its job well.
I never realized how much I love surf guitar until that intro, fucking killer stuff
I recommend The Mermen. Dick Dale was the king but the Mermen are worth a listen. Wish I could play like that
I love my old one !... Really happy that new people will buy these to share its very special spirit !!!
This is definitely one of my favorite episodes on your channel that I've ever watched. Thanks for having some fun with this one. 🤘🏼⚡️😎
Ommagad i love the surf rock and you got it bro i love the intro demo you did so smooth
The tone through the video is just beautiful. I like everything about it except the price :) Thanks for posting.
That middle position sounds unreal! The power and bite of the humbucker and the roundness and hollow sound of the neck pickup combined is just like surf guitar on steroids! I love this guitar for both popular styles it's used for and the surf just sounds so good on this.
I have mine coming in a couple weeks finally. I held out for a good deal and watching this video makes me even happier with my decision. Some great playing!
I've just got the new Jag-Stang and it's so good that it's making me reassess the rest of my guitar collection! It has all the sounds 🥰
Proof once again that the best guitar for what you're playing is the one that makes you want to play whatever it is when you pick it up. I honestly feel any guitar with a vibrato system can be a surf guitar if it makes someone want to play surf.
Yep very true. The trem and a spring reverb is the only thing you really need.
Whammy bar isn't needed at all to play Surf guitar.... I play a hard tailed Strat just like Dick Dale did.Reverb, Byzantine scales and knowing how to play is all you need.
You should meet some Soviet-era instruments made right in the USSR! Even though they have copies of Jazzmaster and Bigsby vibrato - it's not surfing, it's called drowning.
Ryan, I love your surf playing. You have a real feel for it. I wish you would play more in that style, which I understand doesn't always work when you're demoing musical equipment.
This is definitely one of the coolest videos I’ve seen on UA-cam, so fun
Mustang trems are great vibratos, especially for surf - the key to setting them up is to screw down the bridge at the cigar tube so nothing moves and then gradually unscrew it until you have proper tension (which is what essentially what you also do with a Strat by adjusting the backplate spring claw).
You are correct.
@@samboggs3499 Almost accurate but not complete. Don't forget the two-stage spring installation option below . After such a coarse tuning, a fine tuning with a key follows🙂
Smiled through the entire demo
Thanks for the glorious surf, Ryan! It’s what keeps me coming back. ;) The obvious choice for another switch would be a coil split.
Wow, I've been watching your show for a while now, and you always have so much fun; one of the reasons I keep watching I guess.
But Boy, did you have fun today! That intro was phenominal, and you seem one with the guitar.
It's zs though it's built for you.
Looks and sounds like the ultimate surf guitar… thanks for keeping surf guitar alive
Excellent playing - -actual music!
“Diapers on the table” 🤣🤣🤣
Love these Jag-Stangs, great to see a fresh take on it.
Surfs like a boss. Great vid, bro. Thanks
That opening jam was epic!🍻
It surfs great! 🎸 This guitar sounds better than I thought it would. I feel a gas bubble starting up lol
This guitar, and my Fender twin reverb amp. Wow! I treated myself for Christmas this year.
Damn that is one nice Jagstang and that surf pluckiness is spot on!🤖📡
Awesome Sounding Guitar!
Definitely a surf guitar! Killer intro jam!!🤘
Great performance!
Love that surf vibe! Cowabunga!! 🏄♂️
Killer Review Ryan, it sounds Great for Surf, it makes me want to buy one, I hope Fender are letting you keep it
Id love yo see more videos on these guitars
Maybe some setup vids or a teardown
Any mods you do in the future.
Just more Jagstang content in general!
Really sounds great! Would love to hear that Hallmark on the back wall sometime too!
90s mosrite vs hallmark swept wing put that in your search engine
Loved the intro!
DAMMIT! I do not need another guitar.
Sounds really good man
The dynamic vibrato is badass. When setup good its probably second to none as far as goofy fender trem systems go.
My then girlfriend, now wife bought me a Jagstang when they first came out and it's been my number one ever since.
In love with the 7.25 neck with vintage frets. I wish more guitars were made this way
I've heard the out of phase sound described as "quacky" so I figured you would like it. Dive bombing can be done. There's a guy on UA-cam who set his up with EMGs and does insane dives on it. But I'll agree, it sounds great for surf. It's a very versatile instrument 😁
CREEPINGNET
@@bgm9517 yep, that's him!
@@hotrod54chevy Dude rocks!, almost everything he's done with his offsets is what I've also wanted to do.
Todd Rundgren used a Mustang on Meatloaf’s “Bat out of Hell” exclusively because the trem could do deeper dives than any other on the market at the time, and could do the “motorcycle thing”.
I have this guitar. I love it so much. Thank you Kurt Cobain. I might swap pickups but, maybe I don’t need to. Your demo is right on.
LOVE the Cake lick at 12:53!
If u want a bridge hum bucker that sounds very single coil-y, get a Seymour Duncan Jazz bridge. (Not to be confused with the jb) this pickup is an immense sleeper. It’s just fantastic in my sg, and I used to have one in an hss strat and it matched the tonal output and profile fairly well.
That opening sounded great. By extension, the guitar probably does as well. And you too, I suppose. So congratulations to the three of you.
I recently got a Squier Classic Vibe Mustang, and the trem on it is fantastic. It's the best, cheap, guitar I have ever had while being completely stock... I did roll the edge of the fret board and rounded the fret ends and polished the frets. Otherwise it was perfect.
I’ve had one of these since 2003 in fiesta red. The shape and feel of the guitar is what sold me on it. Wasn’t until I bought it that I knew it was a Kurt cobain design. Now years later I’m exploring other musical styles such as the 60’s surf sound. Love this vid!
Great video!
Intro jam is fantastic.
This is the 3rd video on this guy's channel that I've ran into so I said okay, I'll subscribe.
lol, thanks for the follow.
@@60CycleHumcast you're welcome, your playing is great BTW. Never been into surfer rock but I'm starting to like it, after watching your videos.
Bought the fiesta Red... Love nirvana and kurt cobain.... Couldn't be happier with it ❤️
I put a spring from a pen inside before the grub screw and a little piece of eraser for my mustang's dynamic vibrato arm. and now it's smooth and stays where I want it to. Was my biggest complaint on that guitar.
stop making me fall in love with this guitar.
No kidding eh
Of course the Jagstang is a surf guitar. Remember that Cobain guy who had that group, Surfana?
No, actually Cobain was in Nirvana, the first group in the nirv genre!
Yeah, man, that IS a surf guitar. Sounds amazing. Rusty in eastern Tennessee
I enjoyed this!
Love the video, I just got the same exact guitar Kurt Cobain jag stang it’s such a beautiful guitar 🎸
It does seem like it would be a fun guitar to play for sure. I've been thinking about getting a short scale guitar for a while now. I'm leaning towards the Player Mustang with a pair of P-90's and 9-1/2" radius, but this might compete because of the cool wiggle stick set-up.
I owned one back in the day… great guitar.
So cool!
The materials used are so similar to the player series that I can’t believe how much more this guitar is!
Well first of all it’s a unique shape, it’s got a rosewood fretboard instead of Indian laurel, and if you get it second hand it’s only a few hundred above a new mim
I think I need a Jagstang in my life now 😂 always wanted an original red MIJ one
I believe heavier gauge strings would help tuning stability. The shorter the scale the heavier the gauge you can use. Because of the difference in tension between scale lengths and string gauge.
I use 9s on my CV mustang and use and setup the whammy floating for 80s metal, and it stays in tune pretty well.
Interestingly stupid idea! I haven't heard anything so silly in the last 40+ years.
@@onkelpool Sorry to offend the string gauge god. Can you ever forgive me oh wise one.
Very nice
I used to dislike the Jagstang body shape, but I like it now. In your hands Ryan, a BC Rich Warlock would be a surf guitar.
That is the most fun I’ve seen you have since you played the Teisco at Carter’s
I played one from the late 90’s (?) from the first batch and I nearly went home with it. That rarely happens.
I have a Johnny Marr Jaguar but for some reason I haven’t bonded….pickups lack something …not sure what I have to do. Any suggestions ? Common issue? I know that something is buried in there.
Loved that demo.
Oh my God I just love the Riffs in the beginning is that a song I don't know the name of or is that something he wrote himself either way it's awesome
I had the original cheaper version, and I agree it had a nice jangly sparkle , It was super fun to play . Tempting to get the new version
Love the intro. Ryan, would installing a tremolo lock resolve the tuning issue?
The internet has been lying to us all about the mustang vibrato! Those who say it's unstable never had it properly set up.
Furthermore, I prefer to use the vibrato WITHOUT the wiggle stick. I always use my palm to work the "cigar" instead.
I feel like it let's me express my modulations and pulls & dives more accurately, like is an extension of me, a part of me, almost.
Give it a shot!
So, contrary to what many may say, the jag-stang and the mustang are MY two go-to's for surf guitar.
I’ve been using it a lot and still can’t believe how stable it is. I’m addicted to dive bombing it.
I own a 72 Mustang, never had an issue with the trem, my best guess is one has to get lucky with one that never gets an issue? Love the surf sound out of the Jagstang, Ryan
Cool review Ryan. The Allen key is not super appealing but please let us know once you’ve done the hop ups to it and we can all check it out.
Great video!
We could use a good comprehensive set-up tutorial for the Fender Dynamic Vibrato
… i am not really a fan of the JagStang but my beloved Mustang could use the help 😅
Puisheen is the channel you want for that. ua-cam.com/video/TT_HAh-_wok/v-deo.html
If it looks, smells, tastes, feels and sounds surfy, it's a surf guitar! 👍
But... It's too small for your hands and build! Better send it to me... 😉 Love the surf music, Ryan!
glad you like it.
Some mean surf n turf type tone right there 👍🏻🎸🎶
It sounds good.
Very cool
Sounds surfy and kind of like middle eastern in that first jam. Cool demo
This is getting my gas going
Every guitar I try in a shop is missing the bar, maybe bring your own wiggle stick with you lol
Interesting guitar. I've wondered what these sound like.
The Jag-stang being a good surf guitar isn't particularly surprising since it is a Fender, and Fenders have great cleans even if they were made to live in dirt and thrive in filth even if they were made with cleans in mind.
Would be cool if Fender could put out a Paranormal Jag-stang with Mustang pickups and Jaguar switching and trem system. (IE the inverse of what this has)
only if they call it the mus-guar
I didn’t know you were a graphic designer. Same!
the moment you started playing surf with the choppy trem it completely recontextualized the jag-stang for me
Real quick, what pedals are on that floor board?
Ryan..... No matter what guitar you play, it seems like you're well on you're way to being the next king of surf guitar!..... rip Dick Dale.
You know at first I really wasn’t loving the Jagstang but I think it’s kinda growing on me, especially it’s sound and versatility
DEFINITELY a surf guitar, great drippy, jangly tones
What strings are you using on it? What brand and size? I love the sound.
The diagonally mounted bridge humbucker no doubt gives it a little more treble.
That is some of the best surf sound to have come from Fender! I really want one now. Thanks a lot Ryan 😑😂
What tunes did you play at church with it?
Do surf sounds come from anyone else?
@@micsunday14 Danelctro, Mosrite, Gretsch, come to mind as great surf machines... along with just about every other guitar out there, especially with the right effects... that Jagstang was inherently better at it than one might expect though
Definitely surf 🎸 when you play it.
