Making an enclosure for my Laser engraver
- I got this 2500mW Laser engraver from gearbest .com. To protect it from the dust in the shop and manage the fume extraction I build an enclosure for it. Its made from 12mm thick plywood and 3mm acrylic. I salvaged a fan, switch and some wires from an old PC Power supply. For the fume filtering, I use some active carbon filter that I got from my home center.
Thank you very much for watching!

I think it can be usefull to make smth to switch off laser when door of enclosure is opened.
Reed switch or smth like this.
@@QueueTeePies There is a point, with some youtubers reporting that this Gearbest junk turns on the laser unexpectedly. Plus, I wouldn't even trust it enough to included large acrylic windows. Instead, I'd stick an old cell phone in the box and stream video out. No windows, unless they're made from correctly-rated uv laser filter material. ...and I wouldn't trust the included glasses for a sunny day, let alone an el cheapo China Direct laser engraver.
Great build! I have a similar model engraver (smaller size) that I shelved because I didn't have a good smoke extraction system. You have definitely given me the inspiration to make my own.
Im in the middle of building an enclosure for my engraver and ran across your video and must say its the best yet! Excellent video!
Your own glowforge! Love the pass through and lights.
Thanks! Not quite glowforge more a #slowforge!
brother, I just bought one like yours, I live in Brazil, and now I'm looking forward to the arrival of the machine, I'm going to make a project based on your idea of a cabinet so that it can also be free of dust and other things. Very good video and congratulations !
Thank you very much!
Beautiful work Seb. That's an awesome box. Love the little door for longer boards. Nice job!!
Thank you very much Red!
Amazing!! Those lights and adapting the power is a fantastic idea!! Great job my friend!!😊
Thanks Jedidiah!
This is awesome, I think out of all the encloser's I have seen I will make one like this, thank you.
Very nice build Seb ! Clever design !
Thanks Remy!
I just got a similar model laser kit. This will be a great project !
Nice job.
You inspired me to make one similar to this. I added green acetate transparent film (for OHPs) to the windows so I can keep an eye on the engraving while doing other jobs.
Great idea!
I need that laser engraver! Sweet home you made for it
Thank you very much! :)
great design and workmanship
Nice idea !!! I love the back door that you make this is one of the best !!
Thanks my friend!
Love your design, thank you for sharing your amazing video
Thank you very much Carsten!
Amazing work, man... Turned out awesome! 😊
Thanks! :)
Nice work! That engraver looks handy!
Thanks Andy! I hope to get some use of it!
Very nice! You are very good!i would like to make one just like yours nowadays.keep on your good work!
Your work is really very good, I follow your videos and I love them
Thank you very much Ruan!
Fantastic video! You’ve inspired me. Thanks mate
Thank you!
Zappp! Very cool project and congrats on the new laser!
Thanks Alex! :)
Üdv!
Nagyon jó ötlet és igényes munka! Gratulálok!
Köszönöm Szabolcs!
cool build the bypass door on the back was a good idea..
Thanks John!
Very bling! Awesome!
Thanks Alan!
Nice project! Keep em coming!
Thanks! ;)
Always pretty awesome!
Thanks Libo!
Nice work!
Thanks Nikki!
Thanks for the video. I really like your enclosure. You should be able to add the lightburn camera to that as well.
Nice job man, looks great!
Thank you!
Very cool project!!!
Thanks Bill!
You think like I do. Love your perfectionist ways ! Guess what I'm making 😁
Great build! I just got my laser and need to build an enclosure for it as well. I looked on your website, do you have plans/dimensions for this project?
Great video really good idea making an enclosure it’s something il be doing with mine but how did you get the laser engraver to make the grid on the base plate please
I have the same laser, I may build your enclosure.
I like the trap door for out back.
I think I would do the same for the front.
Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks Marcel! I didn't wanted to put one in the front. I just close the lid. The suction from the fan don't let the smoke escape. And it has a nicer look to it. But you could also make the complete front panel hinged.
Pure excellence! Most of your projects inspire me a lot. Keep up the good work my compatriot maker! :)
Thanks Mark! Glad you enjoy them!
2:05 Thats a very good way to clamp it down with 2 clamps!
bel lavoro thanks friend
good job 👍
Very compliment!!!!
Thank you!
Amazing 😍😍
We see the exhaust port for the air to be pulled out, but there are no holes for fresh air to get in. With no air movement, not.much smoke will get pulled out.
You are correct. I added some intakes later.
Great job.bravo
Thanks for sharing.keep it up idol.
Stay safe.
Super, great 👍👍👍L. G. Martin
Thanks Martin ;)
Hey, can you send me the dimensions for the box. I ordered the a3 pro laser engraver and until it arrives i want to make the box cover for it :). Thank you all the best 😊
Very nice! I'm still debating on buying this laser machine or a much smaller machine but with a much more powerful 15w laser. Great work!
Get the more powerful one!
Thanks
Good project for personal safety.
Great job, enjoyed watching!
Thank you!
Great job. I'm thinking of something along similar lines for mine.
One thing though.. The perspex panels offer zero protection from laser exposure. Swap them out with the darkest transparent red you can find, and they will protect from reflections, which can still do a lot of damage.
John Bailey I always wear my Laser glasses when working around it. And its much cheaper than buying a proper acrylic for the box.
I'm glad someone else mentioned using laser viewing glass! My idea behind an enclosure was so I *wouldn't have* to wear laser goggles!
But the quality and precision in the build is *excellent*. How long did it take to make, Sebastian? And is it a rivet gun you used with glue to attach the sides?
If you use the charcoal filter to filter the fumes back into clean air, why then do you also need the pipe to the extraction fan at the top of your workshop? Or am I overestimating the effectiveness of the charcoal filtration?
Those types of laser proof acrylic panels would cost more then the laser engraver itself so I gone with the cheaper route. I used a nail gun and wood glue to fasten it together. Since then I removed the charcoal filter. It wasn’t working that well, probably to small of a surface area to catch all the particles. I would recommend an exhaust pipe even with a better filtering system.
@@Ollaris The charcoal didn't work? Hmm. So it'd be best just to have an extraction pipe going directly through the wall, then, I guess.
Have plenty of pipe and timber walls I can make holes in w/o needing a core drill.
I also have two pieces of laser viewing glass, so if I adapt some of the fantastic construction ideas in your video, I may be able to get away w/ not needing goggles at all...👍
You don't need an officially laser proof rated panel. Our lasers are blue, so red blocks them. I got some deep red transparent acrylic on ebay for a few quid that does the job beautifully.
Basically if I can cut it with the laser(even though it has to take about ten passes going really slow), that proves it is opaque to the laser, and the distance it is from the focus point means any light coming near will be unfocussed, so while not guaranteed harmless, certainly reduced to a reasonably safe level. Good enough for stray reflections. And at least as good as the cheap ebay safety glasses.
Nice enclosure and it is a must for laser engraver congratulations ,please could you share a list of dimension wood , Thanks i advance
Beautiful build. What is the size of the box, what did you make, for the engraving device?
Is this basic acrylic used here good enough to be able to watch it while it runs without the included safety glasses? Or is there a way to do that?
Nice 👍
Thanks!
very nice... as usual :D
Thanks Jivko!
Fantástico,magnífico,parabéns muito capricho!
Thank you!
Bravissimo
in order to engrave acrylic, you can simply put sharpie or a dark marker or paint on the acrylic for it to absorb the heat. This means that rather than refracting the laser, it will absorb it and you will be able to engrave. Just find a solution to dissolve or wipe away that paint/marker when you are done.
Thanks ! I will try that!
That's exactly what I used a yellow highlighter that did the job perfect. quick to clean also and easy to see when it engraves it also. Btw Ollari : Great video. I did something similar with only Plexiglas but its too see through. Gonna redo with some spare 9mm mdf. Love the back flap idea.
Pretty freakin cool my man!!!! Thank you for sharing!!!
Thanks for watching Drake!
hi great build do you have any plans or measurements thanks Roger
Obrigado
I think I'll build something like this, one question does the fan suck up enough? I was thinking of using a bathroom vacuum placed centrally at the back panel
It works well enough for me but i guess the bathroom fan would be a good upgrade especially if the hose is longed.
Hi, great vid, also very nice job!!! Would you share box dimensions?
I am using a 2,8Watt JTech laser, Acrylic no chance. maybe because its transparent. I was thinking how to get over sized material in, but at the end i checked the backdoor :D
Do you have to use eye protection? if yess like me, change the windows to protection glass.
I was also thinking of building a box but the xcarve is too big.
greetings from my channel, Arne
I was thinking about the same when it came to eye protection, the "glas" acrylic wont protect you from the lasers light in my guess. I skipped acrylic when i built my box for it because of this but do you know where you can buy protection glas suited for this in EU/Sweden?
Beautiful build. I was wondering if the fan in the back was good enough to evac odor from burning or does it only suck the smoke out? Would like to build one.
works for both!
Hi, did you prepare any PDF plan or anything else for this useful project ? Thanks in advance
Can you send me some pics or info about how you have this wired up?
The quality and precision in the build is *excellent*. How long did it take to make, Sebastian? And it is a rivet gun you used with glue to attach the sides, yes?
If you use the charcoal filter to filter the fumes back into clean air, why then do you also need the pipe to the extraction fan at the top of your workshop? Or am I overestimating the effectiveness of the charcoal filtration?
You can build it probably on a weekend.
du bist ein begabter maschinen bauer👌 cooles gerät.
:) Danke mein Freund!
Looks very nice, I will build one for my laser soon, but the slot you made in the back I will also make in the front, so don't have to open whole thing to place something long (you can improve yours this way). Is ventilation enough? May be better if you will make some vents holes in the walls at the bottom, so fresh air will be sucked in and fumes will be sucked out by ventilator.
Yes, vent holes are a good option. The fan is enough but bigger is always better.
nice enclosure seem easy enough do make with just a circular saw
Hi, did you do a plan(PDF or similar) with measurements ?
Thanks in advance
Antonio
Hey Antonio. I don't have any plans available yet.
Would you happen to have a cut list and dimensions for this Great Enclosure?
I'm thinking of buying this Lazer for personalising beer caddy's... Would you recommend it... Great video and fantastic build btw seb
Thank you very much! It’s enough for engraving for sure. It takes a bit of patience to set it up but when you have more than 1piece to make it’s worth the setup time.
hi! have you tried it on painted metals?? i would like to know if i could buy one of this to engrave painted aluminum, by just removing only the paint
Yes I have! It works. If you want you can use the link in the description when you purchase one. (Affiliate link)
Great video, I’m currently looking at purchasing the A3 myself. How have you found it. Would you recommend it for a newbie getting into the laser world. Thanks. Been sub’d and your great to watch.
Thank you! I've seen a friend use it to customize his woodturning pieces. and he recommended it to me. Its good for engraving in wood and leather. It cuts paper just fine. for any more than that you need a proper 40W laser at least. And keep in mind that it is a DIY kit You need to play with it to get working properly. I have a link in the description for this and for the stronger one if you want to check out the price
Ollari's thanks for getting back to me. I’ll check out the links. Cabinet looks fantastic. Do you have plans available for if/when I purchase it.
Sorry i don’t. I might do that.
Ollari's you should I’d imagine it would sell well. There must be hundreds of the A3 out there. I found your video just by looking at videos of the A3 and watched yours before I had even watched a video about the A3 itself. 👍👌
How did you connect the power for the fans and the lights?
Could you share a basic cutlist for this? I'm too l lazy to generate my own. Cheers!
Very impressive work. How this laser I am looking to buy one.
It works great for engraving. Not for cutting.
Nice box ;). I have a question, for the fan do you use another power supply or do you get power from the supply of the engraver?
Igen a lézernek a tàpegységét használom.
Szivesen
Does the plain, clear acrylic provide eye protection to let you watch the laser working?
No. It’s just there to seal the fumes in. You always need safety glasses when working with a laser.
Olá tudo bem ? Voce saberia me responder se esta maquina na versão 5500 conseguiria contar papel, tipo papelão so que mais fino?
Yes it can cut paper in one pass, in cardboard it depends on the thickness, but with multiple passes, it can cut to thicker material too.
Gracias
neat!
Thats not much.... you can expand on that if you like! ;)
Very nice! I'm jealous. Is the plexiglass some sort of protection also
No, just to keep the smoke inside.
@@Ollaris very creative.
I"m planning to pick up a 2500mw laser like this one very soon :) Did you have any specific concerns with what you use as a bed? (so if it burns through your work piece) This'll be my first laser so looking around at what folks are using for this as well as enclosures.
This 2500mw laser needs about 10 passes to burn through 4mm plywood onthe same place so I’m not worried about the spoil board. It is just held in place with double sided tape and i still can use the other side.
Ollari's Awesome thanks! What’s your thoughts on something like a self healing cutting mat? Too weak to withstand an accidental burn through?
Ollari's I just ordered mine BTW :-) Super exciter to start learning how to use it. Very inspired by your enclosure and really appreciate that :D
What powersupply do you use to power the fan and the LED-lights? I see you switch them on/off with the button salvaged from the old PC power supply.
I just hooked it to the psu from the laser.
@@Ollaris did you cut the cable and then connect it? Or did you put some plug in between to be able to extract the power?
I soldered some plugs right on the pcb where the DC plug is.
Do you have plans for this amazing design?
Seconded
I think I was more impressed with all the shop tools you have than the enclosure for the laser. Lol 😆 Curious, why did you use clear plastic instead of orange like everyone else.
It is just there to keep the sawdust out and the fumes in.
Great build, got inspired, built one too, not as good though.
Se era possibile ti avrei messo 10 pollici in su. Complimenti
HAHAHA! Thank you!
Do you have plans for this ? Is so could I get a set?
Hola.
What was the inside dimensions of your box? 24" isn't really enough I found out. I've got to expand mine. The steppers are almost touching the sides.
Mine is 19” by 25 1/2

Very nice enclosure. Many folks just vent directly outside the house, so no filter needed.
Did you add a camera? If so what kind
Wonderful. Like 121
