    Move to a country because you want to live there, love the culture and learn the language, never just to save money, or else you will never be satisfied. (Brazil is a fantastic country and culture but too many US immigrants in LatAm make no effort to integrate)

    "And that has no natural disasters"
    That's an important statement that not many people say about Fortaleza. I've been living in the city for 30 years and I've never seen a natural disaster here. Most Brazilian state capitals struggle with landslides during the rainy seasons, intense heat wave or bad storms.
    While Fortaleza always has a calm weather throughout the year and has no landslides because it doesn't have any hills. It's a pretty flat city. The temperature is always between 21° and 32° C. (It's like 70° to 90°F).
    Indeed, the only problem of the city is the violence. Although it's not very different compared to other big cities in Brazil.

    You have the costs wrong and quoting exchange rate. What you are looking for is purchasing power parity. Which average US vs average Brazil is 4-1. Miami to Rio is about 3-1. So Fortazela is probably like 5-1.

    • @BillyGringo
      @BillyGringo  7 годин тому

      I see where you’re coming from with PPP, but when it comes to real-world affordability, the 6:1 exchange rate is what matters. For example, if you take an Uber from the airport in Rio to Copacabana, you’re paying around 120 Reais, which is about $20 USD. In the U.S., for that same ride, you’re paying upwards of $50. That same trip here in Fortaleza would cost about $10. And with $2,500 in Miami, that’s basically struggling-you’re probably sharing an apartment with roommates just to get by. But in Rio, São Paulo, or especially Fortaleza, $2,500 goes way further. You wouldn’t even have to share a place with anybody. You can do a lot more, go out, live a lot more comfortably, and even save money if you want. You wouldn’t even really have to pay attention to your wallet. So, I don’t agree with the whole idea that Miami to Rio is 3:1 and Fortaleza is 5:1. The real costs just don’t add up like that.

    • @BillyGringo
      @BillyGringo  7 годин тому

      Right now, I’m sitting in an apartment in Fortaleza on the 20th floor, in a modern building, and it’s for sale for 450,000 Reais, which is around $73,770 USD at the current exchange rate of 6.1. Now, if you’re looking for a similar-sized apartment in Miami, but not in a high-rise, and in an older apartment complex, you’re lucky if you can find a place like this for less than $200,000. This is just another example of why I disagree with your comparison. When you compare the cost of living here in Fortaleza with Miami, it’s clear that the pricing difference is way more significant than what you’re suggesting.

    While Florida was my home and I grew up there in fort Myers, I think one of the main issues, especially now is housing has become so unaffordable. You are almost forced to live in a gated community and with that comes HOA fees. In a lot of cases you're paying as much in HOA fees as you are for rent on top of paying a mortgage or rent. So as an example the place I left a year ago was $950 a month and they were planning to raise it another 50 and that was on top of the 2200 that I would have to pay to rent the two bed at two bath house. That's insane. You don't have an option to not pay it. And if you don't want to live in a gated community, you have to live inland in a really rural area. It's ridiculous and that's not to mention the cost of everything else and as we all know in the US you need a car to get around to do anything. So add that cost and insurance and a lease for the car to everything else. And if you're not making at least $7 to $10,000 a month, you're going to be really struggling

    • @Kristoferwitha_k
      @Kristoferwitha_k 3 дні тому +5

      Yeah I totally hear you. My only issue is that I can only stay 6 months at a time. I can apply for the digital nomad Visa but that only gives me a year and then? So it makes it difficult a fixed income for the other 6 months and then when you come back to Brazil you'd always have to find a new place and again the cost would fluctuate because what you want may not be available in the area or the budget etc etc

      Don’t worry, you still need money to come here, which filters out a lot of people. Plus, Fortaleza isn’t urban enough to turn into a “little Miami” like Medellín-Rio’s got that covered. You’d be surprised how many clients complain about costs here, even though the city is easily 50-75% more affordable than many U.S. cities. I even get emails suggesting I lower my consultation fees to “help” more people. Lol.

      I factored in the cost of travelling to and from 25 dates or events a month, which comes to about R$625, since each trip is around R$25. I also considered weekend trips to beaches outside of Fortaleza, like Cumbuco, Canoa, Jeri, or even up to the mountains in places like Guaramiranga, or other towns, which usually cost between R$60 and R$150. Averaging R$105 per trip, that’s about R$420 for four trips. So, all together, it adds up to about R$1,000 a month but R$400 is doable if they aren't planning on doing much.
