How to Make a Tortilla Press
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- My daughter Sara is in 6th grade and for the last portion of her school year, like the rest of the world, we have been doing schooling from home. To make the best of it I've have been using this time period to incorporate “homeschool” lessons of our own to introduce her to classes she doesn’t otherwise get at school.
This build was one of those lessons; We blended together a Home Economics lesson with Shop Class and I helped her make a walnut Tortilla press and fresh flour tortillas. We wanted to be sure to share this one because it was build with a nice level of difficulty; some interesting elements, but nothing that wasn’t very very achievable in the end.
Enjoy! And please feel free to recreate this one at home.

What a great dad. You're an inspiration to young guys
Hopefully she doesn't turn into a feminist nag like the females do
Hopefully modern feminism doest ruin it.
Home Ec at my high school was such a joke, she's most likely learning more from you
It’s a shame that so many schools don’t offer it anymore. They’re important life skills!
Don't tell me that having your parents teach you their skills is less effective that public schools...what was learned here today will be with her for a lifetime...
I mean, can’t you have both?
@@yooogle no one said you couldn’t. But this adds to the father/daughter relationship. Allows for practical application as well (at school,”oh,you made a tortilla press”, but at home,”let’s make tortillas and eat them!”
Too many kids grow up not interacting with their parents, fathers especially, so this video is great on so many levels.
Yeah, they teach different things. Both are important
...give a kid a tortilla, he'll eat for today; teach him to make a tortilla, he'll feed his family for life! Beautiful, man!
Tell me you failed 7th grade without saying you failed 7th grade.
This brought tears to my eyes. I remember my dad teaching me basic’s of car maintenance that has given me love of car repair. He died of Cancer but I often think of the times we spent together on the car.
I’m so sorry for your loss. Time working together makes for such precious memories and I’m so happy to hear that you had that with your father. They’re times that last forever
Can’t really do much without DAD. They are our best teachers. Such a great video. Enjoyed it and learnt many new things. Good luck for the future projects. Much love from California ❣️❣️
Glad you enjoyed the video! We loved making it, and thank you
Very unique! Sarah looks like she had so much fun.
It was a fun one
First off, Sara kicked so much butt making this press! It came out so good with the walnut and fancy handle.
So many great things about this video. The intro reminded us of 80's/90's sitcom intros and it was fabulous. Incorporating the tortilla recipe was a great idea, makes us want to grab some burritos tonigh!
Great job guys!
Thanks for the thoughtful comment you guys. I have been playing around with the editing some so I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Cut a ziploc Bag from the sides and works better that the Parchment paper
Thank you. This was the first time ever making tortillas so we guess parchment, but the plastic bag is a great tip. I appreciate it.
That's what I do. Easy and reusable.
Next time you are at the store and buy vegetables the bag you put them in, save them and cut to size and the bags do not stick to tortillas.
Hm I’d have never thought of that on my own but thank you for the tip
Nice job. Easy to follow tutorial too. Question, after using it for a while, what improvements would you make to the design aside from the piano hinge change?
Great project! This is a great press and I love that you let your daughter do MOST of the work! That's awesome!
Great video, the press looks good, walnut is an excellent choice.
Thanks you so much Dave. The walnut came out really beautifully. Perhaps a bit extra, but that’s never stopped us before.
Ok I followed all the stages, but you guys don't mention how or what the number is to drill the hole for the arm. How do you get the measurements for where to drill the hole?
The hole is drilled to match the diameter of the bolt. Placement is by sight to set the bottom of the arm over the pressure strip on the top plate.
There are several mistakes done. First of all, this is press to make CORN tortillas and NOT flour tortillas. The handle is way too short and misaligned. There isn't a stopper on the back (next to the hinges) so the wood plate doesn't open flat
I Love This! We need more channels that teach kids how to work with their hands. This my new FAVORITE Wood Working Chanel!!!
Thanks my friend
I do appreciate teaching your kids how to be a good woodworker. All the best for you and your family.
thank you, to you as well.
Really fun project!
Thanks Ethan!
This video deserves to have many more likes; what a beautiful daughter and dad!
Next week I shall have some free time so I'll make my Tortilla Press; thanks to you guys 🙏❤
Cute, my friend has been nagging me to make one of these but I always thought it above my skill set! Just a quick question, how thick is the narrow piece glued to the top and what sort of pressure is applied? Does it maintain that pressure?
This is the cutest, sweetest video I have ever watched. Thank you.
I’m happy that you enjoyed watching. We had a great time putting the video together
Well done you two what A good team........
Muy bonita tortilla machine.
Awesome project. use plastic for pressing tortillas, will make process a little easier. We use large ziplock bags and just cut em.
Hi! Congratulations! Well done. I have my $20 to buy one. Where do I send my money 🤗
Awesome, could you please make me one. Great teacher and wonderful student. 🎉
Como un juguete está bien. Pero como para hacer tortillas no dura ni un año la forma de ensamblar es muy débil pero para una niña está bien
That was great. I just have to find a way to make thinner tortillas.
Please help me find the plans for your tortilla press. I'd love to make my own. 🙂
Look like the tortillas are to thick.
Omg thanks. You are a genius. I’m making these now
Hmm. I might try that this weekend.
Nice job guys, looks like a fun project, I’ve never made my own tortillas, or really even thought about it. I do wish you went into a little more detail on the cam shape of the handle, as the shape and pivot location seem pretty critical.
This is true. At some point we are hoping to link plans in the description of this video so that there’s a fool-proof template for it. Oddly enough for this we were bold enough to just go for it by feel on the walnut and it worked. A better way would probably have been to do a test cut on some separate scrap.
I'm going to make one of these. Thanks for posting.
Would you consider making and selling me one?? 🤩
Awesome. Loved it. Really good vid. Greets from Brazil
I don't think the hinge and screws will hold up for long. They already are shifting under the pressure on video.
That's why he mentioned changing the 2 hinges to 1 full length "piano" hinge
It's a real pleasure watch her build something. Like many young people these days, my grand-kids spend their time 'gaming'. And it drives me absolutely NUTS!
Really enjoyed watching this :)
Thank you so much for watching :)
Better than the tortilla press I have seen in the Mexican stores. Would 100% buy if y'all make an online store. Awesome job!
Thanks for the compliment. We admittedly got a bit fancy with the wood choice, but we figured why not. Stay tuned because we are wanting to supply either a kit to make this or plans of some sort in the future. It was too fun of a build not to share.
@@MakersWorkshopLLC I can't seem to find any plans for the press. Help.
I found your video because I want to make a tortilla press... and now Im curious where you got that silver/gray modular shelf/rack system (0:20) ! do you mind telling me where you got it? thanks!
Good job both of you. Dad, you inspire me to be a better teacher. Sara, great job stepping out of your comfort zone and learning new skills-being proactive will take you far in life.
Very nice work, both the activity and then putting up on YT. I've now been challenged!
Great video. Loved watching her learn and make such a cool kitchen tool.
Thank you so much Felicia! We had a a lot of fun making it and are glad you enjoyed
6th grade is a little young, but you can add physics with this design. history (native American)/culture and a lot of other classes as well. I made a cheese press out of scrap wood, hardware, and pvc that would be good for school work as well.
Que hermoza maquina de tortillas...esta especial para las de maseca tambien....y que bonito hija..felicidades ya sabe haser asta de harina que son poquito mas dificil..🙏🙏🙏
So unbelievable well done 👍
Great job Dad
I really loved your video of you doing things with your daughter.
Thank God she is not just stuck on an electronic device.
Very cool. Good job! Been thinking about making one and clicked this video.
Love your channel man. I plan on teaching my girls carpentry also. I'm a girl dad.
Sara running down the street was awesomeand random. Something I would tell my daughter to do.😂
Awesome!! It’s hard to make flour tortillas on a press they are done better on a hand roll but that press will be awesome on corn tortillas!! Great job!!
I don't know what warms my heart the most, a dad teaching it a daughter learning woodcraft. Too many people today have no skills, good to see you passing it on.
Excellent project for your kids.
Thanks. We had a lot of fun.
Oh, and subscribed.
@@FauxtakuLounge Welcome! We're excited to have you; New videos every Tuesday night :)
I was working on the same thing and needed some good advice. Tell your daughter that she helped a 41 year old fix his tortilla press design!
I’ll definitely tell her tomorrow morning before school. She’ll get a kick out of it!
Sara seems cool
does she sell them?
The measures?
We’ll done!
haha good job!
Nice!
Sara is a lucky girl to have you as a father, and the resources to get the hands on, real world experience! Well done Sara! Woodworking is such a useful skill that will last you a lifetime!!
Awesome Dad! That is so cool that you and your daughter did this project together and made flour flours! An ingenious idea about the envelope to get the right thickness! I bet those flour tortillas were delicious! The tortilla press is beautiful and should last for many years! Don't forget to make corn tortillas too!
Glad you enjoyed! This was such a fun project and bonus: we’ve already made fresh tortillas a few nights and had a family activity out of that as well
That is a beautiful simple bench!
Great job and a very pretty piece.
Amazing 😍 and fantastic family.
Nice video 👍
Thanks for watching!
That's beautiful.
Great video you two!!
#unnecessarywalnut for the win
Silly Richard. Theres no such thing as Unnecessary Walnut. Its just a myth.
Okay so straight up here. The reason I love this video is because you answer the one question I always have when people make tortilla presses: How does the thing not squish the tortilla into oblivion. Adding the envelope to make a gap is brilliant and now I'm sitting here slapping myself in the head going "Why didn't you think to just add a spacer before the hinge?"
Because I'm an idiot. That's why.
But seriously, I love this video and I love the design and since I make wraps more than the 4" or 5" tortillas I bought a maker for I may take on making a press myself that's more appropriate for the size of tortillas I actually need.
Great video!
Also loved the choice of an acoustic version of a Mario song :)
Thanks so much for watching! And I’m glad you appreciated the envelop trick 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 it always the simplest solutions that make the most difference.
@@MakersWorkshopLLC It's amazing how they fill in the gaps, sometimes.
Pun intended 😁😁
Yes, that's the most important detail. You could even use your favorite tortillas as a spacer!
Typically, a tortilla press is used for corn tortillas. Flour tortillas are normally made with a roller so they are thinner and inflate when cooked.
I use a store bought wooden press for my corn tortillas and they do puff up when I cook them on my cast iron flat griddle. I'd love to be able to make larger corn tortillas as well as Roti and Flour tortillas. Home made always tastes better.
There are commercial tlayuda presses that can be used for flour tortillas as well.
The real issue is having enough force to get them thin.
I think The length and thickness of the handlebars were even more desirable

Welcome! Happy to have you :)
The tortilla looks so thick is more like a gordita, I would like to know if this will work if I want to make them thinner. Thanks
The thickness of the finished tortilla is all about how much you offset the hinge when you are installing it. We used a full envelope here and this is the thickness it gave us. Something thinner would achieve a thinner finished tortilla. Hope that helps!
@@MakersWorkshopLLC Yes it did thank you so much for answering my question . ;)
too much work 4 a simple tool. where is the space of the envelope on the front side? why did u use a cheap piece of wood for the crossbar?
SMH. Were you having a bad day or are you always rude to people more talented than you?
