It's nice to see someone calls it as "Platform Fighters" and not the most commonly used term, "Smash Rip-offs".
Just like first person shooters first was just called doom clones and are now know as first person shooters. The same thing is happening here first called smash clones and now a lot more people are using the term platform fighters.
Or GTA-like for urban open worlds.
Or Diablo-like for hack'n slash/dungeon crawler
Like calling KOF a street fighter knockoff
Smash didn't even was the first platform fighting game, the first platform fighting game was "The Outfoxies"
I love platform fighters because personally I prefer the air and I love spiking opponents.
Shope Animashaun that ain't falco
Erik Kao oops I forgot to dab
So personally, you prefer the air
I like being able to have such free movement
Ah, I see you are a man of culture as well.
He failed to mention the best platform fighter ever, Cartoon Network Punchtime Explosion
Platform fighters are the best kind of fighters because you get to be creative and have your own playstyle instead memorizing many inputs at once I mean I enjoy fighting games like Blazblue and Tekken but for me Smash Bros. Really takes the cake and that is what interested me in fighting games. Thank you Smash Bros. for getting me into the fighting game community.
I find a lot of people don't understand what the difference between a platform fighter and a traditional fighter is.
A traditional fighter mainly focuses on beating down the opponent with little interaction with the ground or platform. Platform fighters require you to use the platforms to extend combos, space from opponents, and recover. Basically platforms are used as tools to the gameplay.
First non entirely ssf2 focused video in a while, and hopefully you guys will still enjoy it! Mainly focused on the competitive aspect of these games since it's something I'm passionate about. Also ssf2 video planned for later this week, gonna try and double upload this week!
BowlerSSF2 yo dude, you should check out Indie game battle. Looks promising enough!
What are your opinions on Brawlout? Should I get it or not?
BowlerSSF2 Didn't it start with Shaq-fu?
2:35
whoa whoa whoa what game is this? this looks interesting and I don't think that's brawlhawla
Mharks Baeson that I Brawlout soon coming to pic and switch
The movement it's so... Perfect
It adds so much depth and make combos so much more stylish
Also having so much control over your character is always a plus
Just got this vid recommended 2 years later and I love it! Deserves more views!
I personally prefer traditional fighters (I mostly play SFV, SF4 and UMVC3 but will be adding to my collection soon) but I still enjoy platform fighters. (mostly Smash 4) the 2 genres can't really be compared IMO because while at their core they are all fighting games, they are so radically different in terms of gameplay and mindset during play.
I'm glad that your having a love for platform fighters. Platform Fighters is one of the most unique genres and easiest to get into than just your typical traditional fighting game genres like 2d or 3d fighting games.
You are right that brawlhalla has a lower skill sealing, but people break that skill sealing all the time. The easy-ness of playing the game is what makes it at the same time difficult.
Wrong
I like the sense of free movement on platform fighters
Brawlhalla was the second game I downloaded from steam ever after Undertale, and I'm an addict. It's gotten me into smash, and as a new player I'm having a lot of fun, but it's for sure a step up in complexity. Brawlhalla feels like it has slightly smoother gameplay, and combos are pretty easy and really satisfying to pull off. Also, it gives massive adrenaline rushes. Smash feels more calm and calculated. I think I'm definitely a fan of the platform fighter genre, and am currently saving for ROA, but we'll see if my computer can run it...
Great Video! Sounds like you got that Pop-Filter!
My only gripe with platform fighters is that it's difficult to sometimes land attacks consistently due to how free the movement options are.
I'm actually wanting to make a platform fighter myself, but with significant differences that make it stand out from the traditional platform fighter. I'm wanting to get it created, but I don't have some of the right people to help me out with it, of course.
I personally prefer fighting games over platform fighters, specifically the anime fighters, these games usually have a lot of more complex mechanics and sytems, as well as having character with their own unique mechanica and intresting stuff that makes watching high level play really fun to watch.
Finally you're channel is spreading to new content
3:20 That's bad apple. I like your music choices.
I'm a competitive Sm4sh and Brawlhalla player, and I can confirm that Brawlhalla is easier to master. My friend and I went on Ranked Doubles and we defeated two tournament-goers.
you should check out jump ultimate stars. it didn't age well and it has some critical features but it was a more platform oriented fighting game and a really interesting one (i still hope for a sequel)
it aged pretty well
I prefer traditional fighting games. But i love platform fighters.
Will there a video on the new patch that just dropped?? Also I'm very excited that they fixed soras flow motion. He's now a much better character, still hoping for puff buffs in the near future though like how most of her aerials aren't safe on hit at low percents and how her drill doesn't function like fox and Kirby's
Dope Ruby That's the plan! Hopefully i can finish it today
Resident RoA player, started with smash 4 and PM but about four years ago i picked up rivals on my laptop and fell in love with the mechanics as well as the unique dynamics that the characters offered. Also, i can’t shield, i’ve tried to get better but my brain can only really play offensive or defensively. Rivals offers that to me in a way smash cannot
I like platform fighters, but I they have a LOT of untapped potential.
Should definitely check out RoyalStrike.
that was good vid i Agree with all your points
I kinda get what u mean abt brawlhalla, but there is way more than u think in that. Where it may lack raw features, comboing movement features together makes a rly in depth movement experience which u have to play for a while to understand
we need more platform fighters it's a sub genre that need explorer
I think the main thing stunting the growth of the competitive side of platform fighters is the fact that the only way to find even simple techniques (at least in smash) like short hopping or di is to randomly stumble across it on the internet. As a result, most casual smash players who beat all their casual friends think that they cannont get any better. We all know that's a stupid and totally incorrect mindset, but the smash series doesn't make any attempt to help people avoid it. When I first started the only moves I knew about were neutral special, jab, and ftilt. It wasn't until a good 4-5 years later that I learned about short hopping, or even about grabs.
I love the Bad Apple remix, it slaps
Hey BowlerSSF2 - you should try Go All Out game for your pleasure ^^
The hiccup at 6:59 haha, it was understood man;) You meant to say platformer :)
I really want a trad fighting game developer like arcsys or snk give a shot at platform fighting games. I want to see how they handle a percentage system and king of the hill platform gameplay.
The only traditional fighting games i play nowadays are fan-made mugens because they are so full of fan service :D
I love them too! But I love Smash Ultimate the most because it's a crossover, and completely the gameplay though.
I love these because there A LOT more different then traditional fighting games
I agree with you
And my friends like this type of video games because of the same reason (Sorry for my bad English)
1:47 do yo play yomi?
Getting people into competitive smash I once got my sub for me teacher to watch smash and splash 3 also I've been trying to get my friend that I've know for like 2 years into smash competitive which he just will not because he a heavy causal he still play melee with item 3 CPUs and he mains pickachu but I've also play this game on my free time called melee light which I've gotten like 20+ into so I just can't wait for the further of fighting platform games
Also I have a club at school were we play smash so that's also have got many other into competitive smash
Not your account Now leave oh my god I wish I could make a club too lol
Same. I've always hated games like Street fighter lol but have always loved platform fighters.
what is the first game?
well, get ready for Indie Pogo
what would a game like dragon ball z raging blast comw under?
Just Breathe 3D fighter but with flying
I'm still hoping for a sequel to playstation allstars battle royale.
all of smash's mechanics working together and the willingness of players to abuse generate tactics, add to that not using a majority of the game are the largest reason it's looked at objectively. also the skill required to play is higher in some areas and much lower in others. It is a focus on movement is amazing and why i love it, but pulling off a combo string with special commands such as 360 for spd, hcf, srk, etc, while smash players physically can pull it off, the tension and situation requires a focus on the fight as opposed to the kill/denying platform space.
players also don't really want to advance the meta and worship their rulesets. hopefully the next gen will be much more inspired. we're almost out of the "just mod the new game to play like the old one" woods. back in the back, tons of developers made their own games to step up to the plate. today kids grow up on smash and don't learn game design from it but they also don't play other fighters to see how what is implemented makes for a different game, experience, and player.
I like traditional fighting games more because you execute and cancel normals into specials moves and into supers.
Love this video; but a few things to comment on:
The criticism of Smash Bros. not being marketed or originally designed as a competitive game can be held entirely accountable to Sakurai himself and his philosophy on accessibility. I would not necessarily say Nintendo as a whole did not want Smash Bros. to be competitive (in spite of the EVO 2013 incident), simply a consequence of direction. I've much criticisms of Sakurai because of that but that's aside from what I want to comment on. "Party game" also isn't a genre like fighting games or platform games; only a descriptor of multiplayer functionality. Technically speaking, you can call Smash Bros. a party game and a fighting game and not be wrong; however, the term "party game" when applied to the context of the discussion of Smash Bros. by other people who play fighting games is often intended as derogatory, as an implication that Smash Bros. is not "competitive enough."
The issue of accessibility and competitive play is also one that I've strong opinion about. Anyone sitting down to play something competitively, whether Smash Bros, Overwatch, Street Fighter, Starcraft, etc, needs to *commit* to it if they want to get better and win. The whole point of being competitive (in context of multiplayer gaming) is utilizing the best tools available and the most optimal strategies to *win,* not necessarily have fun. You touch upon accessibility a bit in your Depth section, but the fact of the matter is that competitive communities are not forgiving in skill. If you don't have the skill because you don't commit to what you're playing which includes investing a lot of time into understanding the game at a fundamental level and playing consistency, don't be surprised if you keep hitting a brick wall that you didn't try to break down before running smack into it. Look up tutorials and get coaching if you need to but you have to put the effort in if want to play the game competitively. I am not specifically talking to community culture, which is its own discussion, but of entry level competition. No one is entitled to be part of competitive gaming by its very nature. Stuff that helps, like Anther's Ladder that you mentioned, is in my opinion the best way to introduce yourself to the competitive attitude and gives you what you need to start getting consistent and learning the deeper metagame underneath with fundamentals.
Hopefully platform fighters will undergo the same Quake Paradigm that the first-person shooter genre did. But you need a quality, seminal release like Melee again that isn't a Smash sequel to begin the shift. Only time will tell if that happens, and I certainly hope that it does because I love platform fighters with their easy-to-pickup, hard-to-master incredibly fun gameplay.
3.58; skywardwing in this video tho..
Platform fighters are definitely fighting games (but to me they're not and those reasons are subjective). That said, I think I see a problem with fighting games when they grow too much. People are too good and the focus of 'fun' is to git gud'. Platform fighters have simplicity so I don't see a problem with enticing new players and bolstering the ranks given enough time.
Brawlhalla's developers support their game and find tech like gravity cancel and more! I wish Nintendo did the same
new ssf2 update GET TO IT :P
Bowler could you do a video on 1.0.3.1 and 1.0.3.2 combined
Lol UA-cam thinks it's a link
Platform fighting games are cool and every player has their own playstyle... Except ROA. Everytime i see somebody do a sick combo in ROA includes atleast 1 n-air and its like n-air combos are the meta in ROA cause i see everyone doing it.
What the heck that's not true. Sure, most character's n-airs lead into combos, but that's not just what leads into combos. You can string together so many different things in RoA, I'd say that it may debatably have even more flexibility than Smash. Are you a fairly new player? Because new players do use n-air a lot with some characters because it is easy to string together.
Kev Dragon i know that but *MOST* of them do that.
Iustin Ivan I'd say less players use Nair just because of how jank they can sometimes be. The characters that rely on Nair 100 percent would probably be Orcane, etalus, and zetter
In my opinion the problem with platform fighters are they are WAAAYY to floaty. I havent played Rivals of Aether but nearly every platform fighter other than smash bros feels so floaty and not tight at all
true. i hope that gets fixed
The touhou music tho...
Smash Bros should stay family and casual friendly while other platform fighters can get more complex and technical. I mean Project M's team made one too
i like traditional and platformers :3
It's not as good as some of the other titles, however you should try and support Rumble Arena. It's a free to play game on mobile and Steam being made by a team of 4 people. They need all the help they can get in terms of how to improve the game.
What is that game at 6:14?
FeralPhilosopher I think it's called brawlout
6:30 ken combo?! XD
I want game mode with depleting health.
I love platform fighting games more than regular fighting games because i could do combos better
Game? 2:06
two hundred and twenty second viewer and thirty ninth liker
Soooo who's ready for Rivals of Tether?
Its coming out on ps4?
@@mako7697 I don't think it will sadly :( rn it's just on steam and xbox and this summer it's gonna be on the Switch
melee is easy first learn movement then fundamentals but it is extremely hard to master
brawlhalla is easy to get into. i love it
lel classic "here's the thing" meme
forgot the outro
Venom Jackson been working on a new one, wasn't finished before this video so I left it blank
Can you really call it a genre on its own when the only games it has are smash and rivals of aether along with a fangame for smash
there's also jump ultimate stars, brawlout, cartoon network punchtime explosion, brawlhalla, i think a viewtiful joe game, and playstation all stars battle royale
so yes i think it's qualified as it's own genre
all these games were badly received (except brawlhalla) and were typically clones of smash. And even if we count them they won't even surpass like 12 games. imo i think fighting is a genre and platforming is a genre and these games are fighting and platforming games at the same time but that's it.
negatively received or not, they still exist and can be counted. and the entire point is to stop calling them 'clones of smash' and start calling them 'platform fighters,' so as 'platform fighters' they're still countable, despite being a very small count
aside from that your points are valid but i still think calling them platform fighters is better
Bowler could u do a review of super smash bros crusade because I hate that game
Shope Animashaun a review full of hate, not from bowler.
Darius Johnson I just want him to rate the game
Shope Animashaun lol why would you bring that up
ThatYoshiGuy agreed. Sorry about that
Brawlhalla has depth
Hi
Try slap city
Hi Bowler! I feel like a douche doing commenting this a second time, but do you think you could explain what happened with the bell in this clip: ua-cam.com/video/INcX_Bo8jo8/v-deo.html Thanks in advance!
Smash bros isnt fgc sadly
FutureMac yea, it is. It’s at evo and everything
2:35
WTF IS THIS GAME
Mharks Baeson I believe it's called brawlout
Kinda find your comparisons to other fighting games disingenuous when you say you've never been interested in anything other than Smash. You make the implication that traditional fighters offer no room for creativity when Smash does. They do offer creativity and all the same things that Smash does, often with even greater depth, you just dont see it because by your own words you dont play those games. I get that you're probably not interested in traditional fighters because you may be bad at them but dont talk like you know them inside and out because your knowledge of traditional fighters is surface level at best.
PsychoJosh LOL
Smash brothers shouldnt be at evo. Js.
Smash brothers is the only thing that should be at evo.
PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is a great semi-clone of smash bros
Turn down the music! I can barely hear you talking over it at times.
What the hell is that indian bad apple XD
I can't play them shitty internet
0/10 video, not showing me how to combo
I dislike Brawlhalla greatly
Kill Streak i got tired of that game
It was a good game tho
meh
It seems lazily made
Not really
