For this reading comments, I am now doing my own oil changes (since the local guy wants $175 for my SEC and over $220 for my 350 SDL) and based upon Pierre's recommendation I use Valvoline Premium Blue diesel oil for both. I live in Eastern NC so we rarely have sub freezing temperatures and that means this oil choice should be A-Okay year-round. I ordered half a dozen Mahle and Mann filters and would never be stupid enough to buy Auto-zone filters. Just Say No, folks. 😉
Synthetic oil story: A friend of mine bought a 380 SEC and his mechanic advised using synthetic oil. He did and the car began leaking like crazy. He dumped the oil, went back to non-synthetic and surprise-surprise, the leaking stopped.

Replace the seals, and using high mileage versions of synthetics will help the seals maintain their form.

On my 80s and early 90s MBs and Audi I’m using full synthetic 5W-40 (Fuchs Titan Supersyn). Mainly because they’re daily drivers and it gives that essential protection when temperatures are below freezing.
Also I’ve found that the full synthetic oils appear to keep the engine clean from sludge. In the past the oil would be black almost immediately after a change…now it’s dark amber as best.
I get all the arguments about full synth causing oil leaks because it breaks down ‘plugs’ in gaskets etc. But I’d rather replace a crappy old gasket than have my oil galleries plugged with sludge and my valvetrain receiving inadequate lubrication!

I've been using Castrol 10/40 synthetic blend ("for high mileage engines") in my M110 engine for a few years now. The cam lobes are definitely cleaner than when another oil type was used. But then again, I've had this '77 280E since 1990 - back when exotic oils were in their infancy.

I use Liqui-Moli 10-40 MoS2, lots of Molibdenum Disulfide in it. It seems it is protecting my cam lobes and other surfaces well. I add a quart of Lucas conditioner, and I add 1/2 quart of MMO 250 miles before the oil change (5000 miles or 6 month, whichever comes first), it seems to keep my oil passages clean….no issues with this system I adopted.

Good info. I like the mention of oil analysis. You might look into Schaefer’s synthetic diesel oils. I’ve been using it in a 6.0 Powerstroke for over 120k miles with no breakdowns. I went with a FS 2500 bypass oil filter at the time of the switch and have done oil analysis with the TBN testing. They advise that at 10,000 miles the oil has over half its wear package intact and could go to 15000 miles easily. The truck has just over 200k on it now.

High Zinc ppm is not freindly to Catalytic converters over time. .. I've used M1 15W50 in both our '98 Carrera S (993) an the MB '94 E320 C124 Coupe w/M104. .. For my W124 with gas engine, I've been using Mobil 1 15W-50. After I do the valve stem seals, I'm considering Red Line 10W-40. (Red Line says their oil can cover the needs of a 20W-50 or 15W-50 with the shear strength of their 10W-40, and I used to use it on the ol' GTI with good results.)
I have been using Schaeffer's on an Dodge Magnum 5.9L gas motor lately and am liking the results. If you are a diesel person, I definitely suggest you look into Schaeffer's synthetic oil, and fuel additives. Poke around youtube for some Schaeffer oil diesel teardown videos.
