I love the nylon saddles- I always use the vintage ones or replace the metal ones with the tone pros ones on 335s lol
softens the attack..Wes Montgomery used the nylons😊
But, I’m a jazz playing nyc musician
Love your videos and playing btw!
Im glad you like them…i personally have zero interest in softening any attacks…in fact im trying to harden my attacks
Here you go D R, see you don't stand alone. Just soften the approach bro.....
@@501chorusecho BTW I did get a music city bridge for a1960 les paul special dc I have with the angled studs, I'm loving what it did for that guitar, totally transformed. Thanks for the recs for that, it's awesome!
I just did the opposite. Replaced the dull nylon saddles with brass ones. Couldn't get them nylon ones off fast enough. LOL
Watching our dear uncle drink beer from a glass is like watching Lemmy do a Motörhead set with an upright double bass.
Derek bought my 61 335. Thank you for doing this stuff. You make us feel like we are part of something only a handful get top be a part of.
This was a great lesson, Tom. Thanks a lot!
Loved this episode!! Thanks Uncle Larry
You are an EXCELLENT teacher! Many thanks for doing this.
Enjoyed the clips from your birthday bash. Hope you and the boys had a great Christmas. Thanks for the open E lesson, and all the others. Have a happy New Year.
you are an inspiration! What a tasteful piece of music.
I watched several incredible clips from your Birthday Bash. You always deliver the Goods. Much respect Uncle Larry. Happy New Year
That was worth the price of admission. Wow, thank you deeply for the open tuning lesson. 🙏 Ken from Boston. Wishing you and your family, and the Homeschoolers a Happy New Year
So many old school licks I heard in this video Tom. It’s an instant classic. I hope you and your boys are having a great holiday season.
Good lesson ! Thanks man you just untied a knot I’ve had in my brain forever. I owe you one.
You're the best, man! Thank You!
This is by far my favorite lesson you’ve given, and more so the best open tuning chord lesson on UA-cam! Thanks Uncle Larry
One of the first alt tunings I learned, always nice to see a few other things within that open e, thanks Tom.
loved the stream of consciousness when you play. I feel that. Thanks Larry
Just amazing Uncle Larry, you just keep opening up the endless universe of what this crazy instrument can do. You ignite our musical imaginations. Thanks so much.
Been watching a lot of Jed in the shed lately. Thanks so much for introducing the Schoolers to so many inspiring artists.
Thanks Tom. Nice drumming too. And happy belated birthday.
What a super cool gift! That was so nice!! ❤
This is the best sounding guitar of all the guitars I have seen you play on UA-cam!! Amazing sounds ! Excellent playing !
thankyou for everything you teach us we are very lucky
I watched a couple of the videos from the 20th. I love how you make the songs short and sweet. Not at all self-indulging.
Brilliant lesson thank you so much UL
Very nice work, Tom - I love your work. Thanks for the new minor voicings for a tuning I "thought" I knew. Your Homeskoolin' videos are one of the blessings that grew from the COVID shutdown. Cheers, Andy P., Eagle, Idaho
Tom, I swear to god you are the best player ever... I've been playing for one year and every time I hear you you're playing something new and interesting. God man you must wake up with music in your head, lol happy new year buddy, you're the best man, I sware!
As soon as you got to those double stops in the intro I said "Damn, I'm stealing that shit". So simple, but so heavy.
I've been playing over 50 years and you are always doing little things I never thought of and wish I had.
Thanks for everything and have a great New Year.
Thanx Tom, happy new year my youtube friend❤
That had the feel of the coolest version of And Your Bird Can Sing…those quick changes…I always hear a Beatles influence when I hear Uncle Larry play. I think it’s the rhythms/time signatures he tends to use and the amazing melodic content. The ability to make everything sound catchy no matter how complex or simple. I guess that’s why he’s the session man. Rock On Uncle Larry…these videos alway get me through the work day.
Very cool vid, loads of useful material
Beautiful!
i’m not sure if this comment makes any sense to you but.. i’m a sort of professional guitarist in Ukraine. and i consider you one of the best players out there(i’m not the only one who does that actually). thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and your musicality. God bless you man!
love that tune!
12:43 reckon this passage is my favourite class moment so far, Teach. My left hand feels so much more free these days but I’ve been lacking confidence in open tunings. This one really hit the nail square on the head. Downtuning my little parlour guitar I’ve got on the trip back home at my parents place, and letting go the shackles. Cheers, Uncle Larry. Huge cheers.
Glad you are keeping the 'Red one! sounds great. Love the Jimmy Brown photo, what a great player.
Hey Tom,
You are awesome!!!!!!!
Nice one Tom. Thanks.
Uncle Larry is the most advanced harmonic geetar player on the web. And he can shred, too.
Love the open tunings! When I first picked up guitar my ACTUAL uncle, a great uncle actually, taught me the open d tuning. As a kid, that opened me up to drop d as well. But he taught me these old country and blues songs, just sing along “cowboy” versions of the songs. He and his friends would sit around and play and sing and drink all night and to be a part of that as a kid was almost fame to me. And I taught myself leads out of those positions because I was hungry to spruce those old sing alongs up. Beautiful playing uncle larry, open e is my fave. And you playing it is even better!!
Practical, usable, bonk-on-the-head guitar lesson. For free. Thanks Unc!
U.L.'s "ramble" is a gold mine of inspiration to a "not quite" intermediate player. Thank you!
Love that guitar!!!
Hey Tom great tour happy holiday s
Ooh - now I know what I'll be trying out tomorrow...thank you very much, Tom!
Multi talented! ❤️😇
Great lesson for us acoustic guys, thanks Tocayo!
i cant explain the pleasure i get from listening to your playing and stories. so happy to have stumbled on your channel. hey Tom, any chance you'd make us a video explaining how you like to setup your guitars, pickups, pedalboard, signal chain, strings, amp? kinda geek out with your listeners. all that good stuff that a guy like me who never uses pedals would love to know.
"Learned something from this ramble...". I learn something every time. The vids... learn something. Rewatching the CMT VG show... learn something. The 3rd & Lindsley show... learn something. As I told you after that show, you are one of the kindest souls I have ever run across. So grateful, man.
thank you bro
thanks tom
Happy New Year, Tom!
In an old video you said a guitar player should be able to tell right away if a guitar is using a different tuning so now I'm always watching for that in your vids and I finally caught it on my own! haha
Tom, I invite you to become a Vikings fan. Our season has been nuts. A betting man could have done pretty well with them this season. And as for heart attack inducing entertainment.. The Bills game almost killed me, it was the most intense nfl game i have ever seen. I arrived late to your channel and LOVE it. Your bottomless positivity, humility, and human compassion are as inspiring as your guitar playing. Thank you. My strat is in my lap and it's going down to open D.
Some actually useful tips there for navigating the open tunings, all the best
Long time watcher. Thanks for the laughs and info, Larry. I knew you were a brother from another as soon as you said how much you hate Gildan T-shirts. When you know, you know! Happy holidays from MI
Skool is in session folks. Thanks Uncle. All of my noodling in the open tunings ends up sounding the same. These few minutes of instruction will help a lot.
Imagine a record with Tom. GT and Jedd. It would be like a new version of the Hellecasters with Jedd doing vocals on a couple of tunes.
Add Tony Lucido on bass, just saying...
Had forgotten about the Hellecasters! Yes I agree we should have Tom make that supergroup ASAP!
That would be really cool for sure…
That would be the coolest shit I could think of. I would add Gordon on piano in the mix too. That guys a genius.
Imagine a record with Tom, Little Tommy and Uncle Larry with me on vocals. Boom!
Loved that little riff at 9:20 or so - reminded me of Ry Cooder 'I think it's going to work out fine' ,,,'Chills' as you say over the other side of the pond!
One of the coolest links ever! Reminds so much of the Beatles and the Byrds
I love it. I’m pretty sure Ronnie Wood used E tuning when the Faces covered Jimi Hendrix’s “Angel.” One of the was an A barre chord grip in standard tuning. I wish I had your ears I could’ve figured out the rest. Happy New Year Uncle Larry. May it be a good one for us all.
Badass Bro!
Cheers Tom
Hi Tom, wow that piece you played at start was really something! You have such a great ear for finding good melodies and chords to go with it. Really tasteful! I just want to add a different view on the nylon saddles... I have two ES-335s and my '63 re-issue has nylon saddles. I quite like the tones from that guitar, and it's really my favourite. I see no problem with the sustain compared to my other 335. I think the nylon saddles are a big part of the character of the tones and I don't dare to change them out 😅. All the best, Thor
The chord master! The best!
Happy New Year Uncle Larry. Been a while since i stopped by. Hope all is well in the world of Session Man. Peace my Brother
wow! just untwisted my brain!
Rockin' the kit!
Hey Uncle Larry, great episode. The open D version similar to Ep13 I think it was where you did the open G lesson. I still use those nuggets in my open G playing so it will great to the same experimenting in open D.
Well uncle Larry, you’re an awesome teacher. It’s hard to do for us normal humans but you’re seeing the chord and the scale all at the same time in any tuning. Dang I wish I could get that so I’m gonna go and get to work. Lol
I wanna thnak you for turning me on to a 335. I ended going with the 330 style. Just love it. G string won't stay in tune but money can fix that. Thanks again
Open up and say ahh. Cheers Tom!
Nice voicings thanks
That was cool
Yes!!! First one to like!! Happy New Year Uncle Larry!!!!!!
What a melody
Yeah it's never a dull moment watching the shaman Uncle Larry . But everybody be praising Uncle Larry aka the shaman and I got to be saying we all that good! after I hear Uncle Larry play I start playing better. Right at home. I don't sound like Uncle Larry (no one could)I just sound better, don't tell me I'm crazy!
this red guitar definitely sounds really good, chime and sparkle but also very acoustic like
Hi Tom… I love all of your vids! Please include your rig/ amp info in the description. I’m always wondering what your amp and/ or pedal choices might be for each vid. Bless you!
I have this theory about why I always drink beer from a glass: it tastes better! -- because with the bigger surface area exposed at the top of the glass, as opposed to the small opening of a beer bottle, you can smell the aroma while you drink. So it's science, people. For me, number 32 is Freddie Brown, of the Seattle SuperSonics, in the 70's. Love your channel Tom, I have learned so much and you pour so much of your soul into everything you do!
Hey Tom, your last two videos have been excellent. Open D probably my favourite tuning. Checkout Australian Band Karma County for some great tunes featuring open D and open C tuned guitars played by Brendan Gallagher (Aust Musician). He also has an open tuning chord book as well. Cheers! 🍻
Hell Yeah! Open tunings on a hollow/semi-hollow - that's the good stuff. I got this off brand hollow body with a P90 that is great for this kind of stuff. Been messing around with this sweet new tuning too that I can't get enough of - GAEDAD
Would love to hear your two 335´s again back to back with the new brass sadles.👍
I've been wanting to add another acoustic guitar to keep it open tuned/DADGAD/Chet-John Leventhal CGDGBE and after loving your opening, OBVIOUSLY I need another electric for "open", too! LOL Thanks for the reminders of how much fun open tunings can be.
Such nice chordal tones...
Man this explains so much about some of Kevin Cadogan's stuff on "the background" and "God of wine"
Happy New Years Tony you killing it brother. I would love to see what you recorded at 12:15 a.m. on January 1st of 2023 if you had a camera rolling because I bet you it would be a bit sloppy LOL it's okay brother it's all love my friend
When Tom says, “What about this?” pay attention. He’s about to show you some good shit.
I have a feeling this kid is gonna go far.
Tone tone tone so good
I can't believe how fast 13.5 minutes went by!! I get this strange, almost guilty feeling when I hear people refer to open chords as "cowboy chords". I've played rhythm guitar a lot, in fact that was my part in the band(s). I can play chords all over the fretboard in most shapes. Most because I crushed my little finger when I was a young kid and it doesn't always cooperate. But sometimes I want that big sound of an open chord. After Uncle Larry, David Gilmour is my fav guitar player. I watch him closely a lot and he uses open chords all the time. I even notice Vince Gill using them a lot too. It's probably just me, I'll have to be part cowboy. LOLOL 8) Peace --gary
Hey Unc! I was intrigued in the video a week or so ago when you were picking chords to play next that were not the expected movement. Any chance you could embellish on the hows and the whys of how to start thinking about other choices that may not be obvious? That would be so helpful for a little deeper understanding of how you do that
Open tunings can rock too. I use Open C and call it the mullet tuning. Heavy metal party on the low strings and all business on the higher strings
Whenever I hear voicings as on 9:35 there is this "Little Martha" touch, although it's open D, not open E. Love it!
Thanks for the tutorial! I’ve never played much in open tunings; standard is hard enough on my calcified brain.
But seeing some of the easy moves to expand your vocabulary beyond 1-4-5 really helped. Sometimes it just takes that little push over the cliff.
Just when the world seems dark and shit is coming apart, the starship trooper comes speaking the truth in open D.
Barry Gibb loves that tuning and has made some great music with it.
Uncle Larry killing it on the drums is like when the virus mutates in a Tommy Lee Jones movie. "Aw, hell. Now we're all in trouble."
Jim Brown,Sam Huff at the old Yankee Stadium...Super Cool Gift
That guitar sounds nice, but I think the other one sounds nicer. In my opinion. When you were A /B ing them had more sustain I thought but either way you are the man Tom . Thanks for that lesson. Love that tuning ..
Took me a minute to figure out what those numbers were lol. Oh, it's TAB...got it. Hey Lar, as much as we love seeing all the great gits, some of which I share, would be cool to know what combo you're using in the kitchen and garage. Just for giggles. Thanks T
Dude you've got such a sweet mix of instruction and display of musicianship. Just wondering with your crazy good chops have you ever messed around with any flamenco or classical stuff? Those guys are great but I'm not sure they got anything on you
