    (cont'd) 2/2) ... I read some stuff on various forums, where people talked a load of rubbish as if they understood what they were saying, but in the end I found this very clearly explained and demonstrated tutorial, and now my problem is sorted. What a lot of difference it makes when someone actually knows what he is talking about. Thanks for this video. (Incidentally Microsoft's suggested procedure couldn't get me past this rotten "System Volume Information" file, so I really needed this demo.)

    Thank you so much. The cacls script finally got me in. My OEM disks do not have a repair console and moving the disk to another machine was futile until seeing this!

    Interesting. Always wondered what that folder was for and why it was locked.
    What do you use for video capture on screen?

    I managed to enter my main folder inside "Documents And Settings"
    But the folders within it like Desktop, My Documents etc that have my actual files are still locked. :(

    Really good tutorial, clearly explained. I had TR/Refroso.bmpt' [trojan] in System Volume Information on both C and D drives and this helped me get rid of them. I've locked them again using your advice, many thanks!

    windows 10:
    First take ownership of the folder on Files Properties' Security tab.
    Turn off Distributed Link Tracking Client Service
    Open CMD as Admin
    D:\>attrib -r -a -s -h -i "System Volume Information" /S /D
    D:\>rd "System Volume Information" /s /q

    Great video on the use of the CACLS command. I do have a question though, could I use this same command to grant a domain account access to a folder. I.E. I'm on Gogo domain and I have a user called Bo could I go cacls "c:\windows\tasks" /e /g Gogo\Bo:F. would a command like that work?

    i don't know if this is the right place for my question. I know it sounds like stupid but I am very new to server administration. I just promoted a server andcreated group policies and it works fine. My problem is that on the local computer, I cannot browse or find the files I saved on the local computer after I login into a domain. I can still login using the old login or the local login and is able to see all my files I saved in my documents but once I login on a domain, i cannot see them.help

    1/1) I had a bit of bother when something messed up my registry and XP didn't start. I got the message:
    Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
    A way to sort this required me opening the "System Volume Information", which is a well-hidden and protected file, so it wasn't too straightforward... (cont'd)

    I got malware in my System Volume Information folder, running Windows 7, and I feel like I've tried everything.. I can't seem to find a way to unblock the folder, I tried disabling System Restore, scanned the computer, ran a defrag, but still couldn't remove it.
    Haven't been able to find any useful information whatsoever on this for Windows 7, would very much appreciate some help with this.

    Im losing 30gb every day from system volume information. I tried disk clean up and your method but it cant be deleted. Im up to 360gb now and idk what to do.

      If you're losing "... from a folder", then a cleanup is not needed. It'll all be gone O' its own accord in a short while.

    Not working. Still shows access is denied. Do i need to run the cmd in elevated mode?

    • @HighestRank
      @HighestRank 6 років тому

      There's no elevated mode in folder view. You are either an admin or you're not. Elevated permissions would be handled by a UAC PROMPT.

    This IS good info originally from MS :
    // support. microsoft. com /kb/309531
    I used XP Home (DOS) method.
    IF a user name has spaces THEN use quotes.
    In a dos window command prompt that would look like this :
    C:\Documents and Settings\user name>_
    Type in this at the prompt
    cd \
    Enter
    This will C hange D irectory to the root {\}
    Your prompt should look like this :
    C:\>_
    Type in the command :
    cacls "C:\System Volume Information" /E /G "user name":F
    Enter
    And need to UNhide systemfiles to see

    thanks after troubleshooting the System Restore error. 0x80070005,I manage to go through all the steps and get to this point..
    installing these two programs is the cause.
    driver agentplus and bios agent plus put alot of ups malware in the pc...
    I know it was them two because it was the last serious thing I downloaded and ran...the application itself...
    I thought it was legit...I was wrong.
