I know this because there's a Man is the Bastard song about it.
@@bronzeowl9 yep, poor Mary the Elephant was publicly hung via an industrial derrick in 1916, the only known elephant execution. She attacked an untrained keeper for injuring her and she ended up killing him by stepping on his head. She had to be hung twice since the first chain carrying her up broke. Elephant's Graveyard is a very well-written play that retells the story about how it all went down.
