there are different kinds? of immortality in dragonball. it goes from having eternal life like master roshi, to being unageing like piccolo to what garlic jr. has going on.
@@windhelmguard5295Piccolo never wished for immortality, he wished to be eternally in the prime of his youth (which as a reincarnation of the original's soul, Piccolo Jr inherited his wish), as he figured with his full power restored forever, no one would ever be strong enough to kill him anyway (and he didn't want to be old and decrepit forever since he can't be immortal AND youthful as one wish). And while he could've wished for immortality later, Chaot-zu's attempt to wish him dead (which would've actually worked that one time had he managed to finish the wish), he decided to not risk it and just killed Shenron instead. Roshi drank from the fountain of youth and was blessed by the Pheonix after earning it's favor in the past, and was immortal as long as the Pheonix lived. However after the Pheonix died (which ended the contract they'd made), he started using some herbs that were similar but had a reduced effect to the fountain of youth to maintain his life, as he couldn't find it again.
This film exists in that weird space between Dragon Ball and Z, so the whole Kami dying = no dragon balls wasn't established in Dragon Ball, so thus we have Garlic Jr really messing up the sequence of events on how his revenge should play out. It is so bizarrely funny that Kami visibly flies face first into the ground when he arrives next to Goku.
Also I need to make this entirely clear: in both the abridged series and the original release, NONE of the Z movies are (or even can POSSIBLY be) canon. There are numerous reasons why each Z movie doesnt fit anywhere in the main plotline due to things exactly like what you mentioned with the time limits on the Dragonballs. The best way to think of the movies are noncanon reimaginings of enemies and events that actually happened in the canon plotline. For example, Garlic Jr and this movie are essentially a reimagined version of Raditz' role in Z (a hostile enemy with vague connections to our main characters shows up, kidnaps Gohan and forces Goku and Piccolo to team up in order to deal with the greater foe). This is a recurring pattern, and in the Lord Slug abridged movie they even repeatedly mock how much overlap there is between the main antagonist and "King Piccolo" a main villain from the original Dragonball series who Goku defeated as a child (also our Piccolo's dad) To be fair, the boys at TeamFourStar do AS MUCH AS THEY CAN to at least make the movies consistent with EACH OTHER, lining as many details up as they can with the main story while also acknowledging that NONE of this is actually canon

I mean, Deadzone could've happened between the end of Dragon Ball and the start of Z. Bojack could've happened between Cell and Buu. And *technically* Broly could fit in the week-long run-up to the Cell Games (presented by Hetap), maybe even Super 13, but then that week gets *really* full. But yeah, the others would require a bit too much artistic licence to fit in, though more so because of stuff like Goku being alive and knowing Kaioken, but not Super Saiyan, while Piccolo is also alive. Or future Trunks just being there, for some reason. The Dragon Balls aren't used as often as people think. Only once per season, really. And there's usually at least 4.5 years between uses.
