This was Dragonball Z at its purest when it came to actual martial arts. The weaker the characters were the more emphasis on martial arts, the more powerful they were the less actual great martial arts choreography. The 1st 2 movies Dead Zone and Worlds Strongest along with Fusion Reborn were the best movies to me. Plus this art style was excellent
And I think the problem with that as one of those “what a great problem to have” is that you need to put a lot of work into martial arts heavy work of any kind, regardless of medium and the better you get at it the more people are gonna expect and the worse it is going to get. Because now they want more being released on the same schedule. But damn is a good problem.
This was back when the fight choreography was centered more around the hand-to-hand combat, and the ki blasts were meant to be supplementary and/or finishing moves. By the time we got to the Android saga, the combat became much more focused on large ki blasts and explosions because of the power creep.
They didn't use power levels at all in DB Super. They went back to techniques and martial arts. What are you smoking. Did you completely miss things like Master Roshi's fights in the final tournament.
Not gonna lie people talk about how vegeta and goku are like this ultimate combo and they used as a duo a lot in DBS but piccolo and goku as a team is seriously slept on. In my opinion.
I hated how becuase of power levels we lost cool martial arts fighting and it was the recent Broly Movie that reminded me of how cool their fighting techniques actually were
It reminded me of that one 1989 batman movie where there's a goon with dual swords slashing at Batman and he blocks with his arms, and there's sparkles coming out like DAMN. It was in part cheesy but awesome, like something out of an anime.
This was all before computers and digital techniques. This is hand drawn. Absolutely unbelievable. So much thought and creativity went into this. I wish new dragonball content would stop focusing on new forms and focus more on good stories, adventure and this level of choreography. Mind-blowing.
I love how everybody slams into the environment and it doesnt always crumble, makes you really go "that had to hurt". Later in the series of course people just fly through mountains as if they were made of styrofoam.
What I loved about this movie, in addition to the amazing choreo, was that Picollo and Goku were basically equal and both looked bad ass. It’s not too often that you get to see the supporting characters really take center stage in the main battles so this was a real treat.
The fact that people can do blow by blows from fights from an anime with an original series starting almost 40 years ago is crazy. It’s awesome the one that started it all managed to keep popularity in Japan and US (also worldwide). Every now and again my timeline fills with Dragon ball and it’s never a bad thing.
This is what introduced me to Dragon Ball. The sequence between Goku and Ginger was used in the opening sequence when DBZ was first broadcast in the US. The first scream of Shenron, followed by rapid fire snippets of intense fighting. It just got the blood pumping! BEST animation I had seen up to that point. I was hooked.
@@cookingwitchefzayy8830are yall new? Lolol. They technically fight like this, the problem is they’re moving so fast you would never be able to see it. Not saying it’s better or anything, but that’s the reasoning.
Yo I literally grew up with Deadzone on VHS. Still my favorite DB movie for just the ground level bad ass martial arts journey Goku and Piccolo embarked on
So glad this movie's choreography is getting the appreciation it deserves. I wish Dragonball would go back to this type of masterful martial arts. Deadzone, World's Strongest, and Goku vs Piccolo at the end of Dragonball had the best choreography (and art style as well) in the entire series.
Street Fighter II V is my favorite choreographed anime, but Dead Zone, Yamcha Fighting style, DB, and World strongest are top not, but I'd add the Raditz Fight too in.
The choreography and high level attention to detail 🔥 super can learn from z movies like this. I'm still blown away by goku dodging both swords with all those flips
04:56 is probably the closest a Dragon Ball Z production has ever been to an actual martial arts movie. It's like something from a Jackie Chan Hong Kong movie made in the 1980's. Absolute perfection in under a minute.
Bro I can't tell you how much I love this fight breakdown because these are definitely some of my best fighting scenes of dragon Ball especially with Goku weaving the swords
Deadzone was head of its time as far as fighting sequences. Very original and breathtaking , jaw dropping fight scenes. No overreacting with the projectiles. Mainly pure martial arts & conditioning.
OK I know that this is an old video, but I am just now seeing it today; and I have to truly say thank you! Finally! Someone is giving this movie it's proper respect! People do not realize because now all DBZ fighting is power levels and Ki blast. But this movie show that dragon ball can truly be a martial arts anime.
@@ORLY911 Unfortunately I have to disagree. Of all the old DBZ movies this is the ONLY ONE with this level of choreographed fights. Again most movies like the tv show is just power levels and Ki blast. This movie was an anomaly.
All I remember of this movie is how scared garlic jr was when his men told him "we stole this kid" and he sees it's Goku's son, it's like when the guy tells his dad he killed John wicks dog and stole his car lmao
I mean he's always using martial arts, they're just not giving the animators time to actually draw it instead of just a bunch of blurry lines and repeated frames
this is what i miss about dragon ball, and the earlier movies, they actually had some amazing display of martial arts, they should of kept it liek this with energy moves sprinkled in some, cause after they learned to fly and blast energy, that all it was after.
People forget Piccolo still got that demon king in him and has no problem killing an opponent. Goku kills on accident or after giving you a million chances. If you watched original Dragonball, youll understand how epic it is to see Piccolo and Goku teaming up and how crazy strong an opponent has to be to push them both to their limit. This was Dragonball at its finest. A martial arts anime with a touch of super powers. Not a super powers anime with very little martial arts as it is today.
It exactly because of these things that I’ve always said Goku had the best fights. This movie gives so many examples of what a beast he is. Fight three opponents and not just holding his own but honestly winning. Those sword dodges. Goku is a beast.
I feel like older DB just had much better choreography. The fights were fun, comedy/ action hand-to-hand masterpieces like Jackie Chan in his Hong Kong prime. I wish fights had more fists and less light shows these days.
Between the 2-on-1 sword fight between Goku, Nicki, and Ginger and the 3-on-1 with Master Roshi and those experiements in the movie before that, these were the best choreographed action sequences in DragonBallZ. Short but absolutely memorable after all these years.
I think this is why the DBS Broly movie was such a Success. it was senseless Power Scaling and we had some nice Animations for the Fights mixing old and new TEchniques, combinations of it and giving us a feel of what´s possible.

agreed, have always thought dead zone displayed the best fight choreo in martial arts
It should have stayed that way. It was all ruined in the Frieza Saga and onwards.
And I think the problem with that as one of those “what a great problem to have” is that you need to put a lot of work into martial arts heavy work of any kind, regardless of medium and the better you get at it the more people are gonna expect and the worse it is going to get. You can really notice the Jackie Chan influence when Goku fights the Spice Boys.

I miss these kinds of fights. The hand to hand was built different back then.
Yea what it was all about I honestly can't even watch super it's jus too much power idk what I be looking at

That’s exactly why DBS Broly was so well received
💯
Old dbz movies where they were still actual fighters, martial artists and barely used light and ki beams. Classic and beautiful, true art right there.
No transformations, no big ki moves just straight hands 😂😂
The old DBZ movies had hands down the best fight scenes.
The sequence of Goku dodging the swords is such a Jackie Chan move, and is probably the best 5 seconds of any DB moment. I love that kinda thing.
Not gonna lie people talk about how vegeta and goku are like this ultimate combo and they used as a duo a lot in DBS but piccolo and goku as a team is seriously slept on. In my opinion.
@sincerepeoples5689
Yeah for a guy who hated Goku's guts back-in-the-day, Piccolo's synchronization with Goku was on point.
I hated how becuase of power levels we lost cool martial arts fighting and it was the recent Broly Movie that reminded me of how cool their fighting techniques actually were
One of the most entertaining breakdowns I've ever seen. No curses, good humor and observant. Nice job.
Goku dodging the swords is pretty close to an old jackie chan movie where he dodges a bunch of tennis balls coming at him
It reminded me of that one 1989 batman movie where there's a goon with dual swords slashing at Batman and he blocks with his arms, and there's sparkles coming out like DAMN. It was in part cheesy but awesome, like something out of an anime.
Dead Zone was peak Dragonball. The franchise was at its best _before_ the power creep started going out of control.

That sequence where Goku dodges the weapons is still the most well-choreographed sequence to come out of the entire Dragonball franchise imo.
The movements and attention to detail in The Dead Zone was so clean.
Those first 3 movies, dead zone, worlds strongest and tree of might all hit different. The choreography and animation was top notch.
Fusion reborn was another one
Facts
Yeah this is definitely when dbz was more martial arts than power. This is poetry in motion
This commentary made me appreciate these scenes wayyy more 😮
I've been saying this same goddamn thing for like two decades now. DBZ fighting has never looked as good as it did in the early movies.

This was actually pretty fun to listen to. All those intricate details that would have been missed!
Early series had amazing fights, but early movies, especially this.. Next level entirely. No detail was missed in choreographing these fights.
Crazy how they really had these niggas boxing and like doing actual moves that make sense with the combo and shit
