i suspect the various human governments chosen very good representatives to paint the picture of the human governments ability to likewise , if the alien council try play the ''oh sorry we cant be held responsible for what ..individuals.. do'' as wolf packs of vigilante fleets flat out starts cooperate with lifelong pirates and have the classic 'tortuga' favours of safe ports in trade for wealth.. or perhaps information , or flat out free restocking or repairs with local government instructed and motivated to look the other way pretending lack luster false ship id's is valid for anyone that can present a single rescued abducts , or in slavery born human to the local humanitarian aid agencies.
not to mention if eradicated by say greys wishing tos weep evidence under the rug by disproportionate resource expending such as to hire every merc in the local sector to turn human origin system and any colonies into dust..
the civil war of the ever expanding imperium would not last forever ,and when the victors being most likely the slave population taking it over ...they might start ask questions to those outside it ,by gunboat diplomacy ... ,that if the answers not where good well.. a new empire might rise with a deeply burning desire to eradicate one more civilization
As long as they were fighting it wasn't too bad. But then the negociations started and you know what that means... they sent their lawyers... just the thought of that...

The word out of Santoxin space is that they killed everyone. Given how revolutions tend to go on Earth it is likely that no quarter was given to noncombatants
Not going to lie I almost cried when I found out it was just a 9-year-old girl then got so happy when I found out he was an undercover agent. 10/10 story!
Gonna be honest- I was hoping for some nonsense on the scale of Monsters Inc. Little girl rampaging her giggly little self all over.
Kinda expected the buyer to be her father in disguise...sad I didn't get an epic ass-whipping-ending.

A nine year old, and yet his terror was still so real. Just wait until the terrible teens! 💀Actually, thinking on it, it is said she is more than halfway to becoming an adult, so, assume a legal adult is 18, or just pick 20, for fun, she IS in her teens, and can be quite physically dangerous, as well as intelligent enough to be a sneaky danger.

excellent story! I loved the idea of the aliens having law enforcement busting slavers. The captive humans must have caused quite the blood bath when they revolted, for the aliens to be so scared of a minor age child. Then again, we don't know where the kid came from. She might have had parents who trained her to deal with slavers. After all, doesn't she seem a little too calm for a child in this situation? Sitting calmly, even waving to the aliens----showing off her "look at me, I'm so cute and helpless". I would like to see what the Immigration Agents do, because unless they have another human with them, they might be in trouble. Hopefully the humans in this world have begun to establish a space fleet, one that will scare the aliens even more. And humans tend to carry a grudge----I think the races that dealt in human slaves may be in trouble when the human begin to pay off those grudges in blood.. Of course, maybe this was the point of this raid. Maybe the humans had had a little heart to heart talk with the "Galactic Council" regarding the rescue of captive humans. Either they do it, or the humans would. Something along the lines of "we'll just kill everyone and let god sort them out." After all the humans would have no reason to think of any alien species as other than an enemy to be killed. Unless that alien species whet out of their way to be helpful.
They already have a fleet. They stole it from that empire. I can only imagine what they started doing to upgrade the tech at this point. Now that’s terrifying.
Humans especially carry a grudge if someone harms a child. All bets are off then

This would be an awesome movie. Told exactly like this. With the movie ending with dude being arrested and the little girl being excorted away.
Preferably while being escorted by two large, well armed humans. One a female, given the captive is a girl. And the aliens staying safely away from them at all times.

I wonderhow much the agent really knew about the civil war and the role humans played.
I would like to see a sequel where they show the measures taken to get her back home and what happens when she is reunited with other humans.
TBH I suspect some aliens could easily keep certain humans as pets if they just offered a gilded cage and the role of a companion or even lover (especially if they offered some sort of trade like, "play along for X timeframe and if you don't like it I'll send you back with Y reward or you can choose to stay and continue this indefinitely after that"). Heck, I'd probably be open to negotiation lol
I mean as long it wasn’t permanent servitude and both parties consented I see no real issue though the human had to be legal age no children it could mess with their development
at that point its more like being employed as an exotic dancer or the like
@@wolffang-vz2ty not necessarily... as I understand it, a surprising number of "escorts" wind up being hired as essentially low-rent unlicensed therapists offering shoulders to cry on and affirmations and whatnot as much as performing the more expected services, and with aliens there's no guarantee that they'd want anything intimate (compatibility issues perhaps) as they might just want an exotic companion with an unfathomable perspective (compared to whatever they consider to be normal) or a jester of sorts. No way to know what they'd really want without contact.

Hmm, given the way this one is, sounds like this isn't in any of the main universes he's made, a completely different one. That said, a good way to do it. Reminds me of the Janissaries series by Pournelle, which has the galactic community use humans as administrators for the most part, with Earth kept 'feral' because humans outside of it don't tend to do well in terms of making more humans.
The titular group are being used AS Janissaries though, on a world which grows a plant that the galactic community loves(read drug), and eventually they begin to realize how bad things have gotten, both on that world, and in general, and of course, while the leads don't know it, the humans outside Earth are watching them, since, if they're strong enough, then it might be time for a 'change in management' at a galactic level.

Hypothesis: The term ‘Terran’ should be used by non-terrans to apply to the sentient population of Terra. Homo sapient, whale or orangutang, we are all Terrans. Human is a term every species would call itself, furred, feathered, scaled or other.
i interpreted "more than halfway to being a fully grown adult" as "she's 15, 16 years old". completely changed the experience of the story.
i take juvenile as 15, 16 and adult as 20 years old. under 15 is child, or "youngling" because this is sci-fi.

Yep always annoys me when ski fi authors use made up units just for the sake of sounding alien and sci fi, unless it actually has a purpose in the story just use normal units.
I mean the aliens are already speaking English for the sake of audience understanding any of it.
Why not use units the audience understands as well?
why would you divide the day into hours and minutes, if you lived on a space station that likely didn’t even have days, certainly not days as long as Earth’s. No planetary timebase is going to work for a Galactic scale civilization. It makes perfect sense to pick a small common time unit and build up from there, rather than picking a completely arbitrary local day length and dividing down from that.
Think about history. All of earths measurement of time started with the concept of the day. We exploded outward for longer groupings of days, and when we had to based on the kind of society we had at each level of our species development, we divided the day into smaller and smaller pieces. Halves came first (day and night), then quarters (morning, noon, evening, night), then three hour increments in some places and four hour increments in other places based upon whoever got to write the calendar and what they were growing, and so on. Everything we did was based on our own local day. But that wouldn’t make sense anywhere other than on this particular planet.
The need for people to measure things in seconds didn’t even really develop until the 1900s- people just didn’t need that level of precision in their daily lives throughout most of human history. A a Galactic civilization most certainly would need that level of precision, and starting with the smallest unit of time as the basis and building up is really the only way to do it.
In Vernor Vinge's stories, the Queng Ho culture measures time this way. Their timekeeping software supposedly traces its history back to the Unix Epoch - even though they don't even remember where Earth is.
I don't think it matters but I feel like clarifying. In the metric system prefixes are set orders of magnitude of 10. The base unit ×10 or ÷10. Megaunits being 100000 units each, kilounits being 1000 units. In the opposite direction deciunits are 0.1 units. A megasecond would be 1 day, 3 hours and 47 seconds.
Mega - | - | - Kilo - Hecto - Deca - Unit - Deci - Centi - Milli - | - | - Pico if I remember correctly. Each step left of the unit is ×10 larger, each step right is ÷10 smaller.
A bit arbitrary but there's a modern definition of a second. "The second (s or sec) is the International System of Units (SI) unit of time measurement. One second is the time that elapses during 9,192,631,770 (or 9.192631770 x 109 in decimal form) cycles of the radiation produced by the transition between two levels of the cesium-133 atom."

The voices are pretty good but at one point the narrator's switches to the same voice as the trader. Makes it jarring. I know it's tricky but if you can keep the voices distinct it makes for a better experience.

neat story.. hmm ,now i'd want an alternative one from the perspective of another federal agent
where some silly idiots for aliens not just kidnapped a random kid that hade a fevered early interested in survival and guerilla warfare due to granddads stories , and also maby.. a bit of an alien or terminator fan ;) , but also killed said kids parents before her/his eyes before tranking the kid at sedative sharp shooter ranges with doses that in their medics opinion should been enough to kill titan sized creatures when out camping so said kid have every motivation to go a bit 'berserk' and perhaps overlook some on the station would have tryeed to liberate them if they known..
so by the time the alien federal police even knows to look at the mega structure sized trade station and suspected cartel involved mega corps on it , well.. its lees due to the leads of black market 'animal' trader network leaks being followed and more because of how suppressed official reports and a tidal way of throttled personal coms floods the department as those left on it and those around no longer cares for cartel bribes ..either desperate for rescue or sleepless in fear the terror if the 'prey' runs out on the station whats on it ..will come for them.
showing how first a steady trickle of ruthless killing and warehouse looting with even flat out veteran merc guards turned to gore without a trace , showing the tell tale signs ...someone brought a sedated human onboard and either ran out of sedatives or.. where an slaver idiot..
and then the trickle of ruthless killing turned into flat out destruction of its infrastructure the kind to methodically cripple transit and then as the increasingly limited docks not just hade to be powered by portable generators hooked directly in the systems locally and shuttle bays started to be constantly packed 24/7 ... rampages that if no blind angle could be found to burst out from , just flat out made gore out of the main gates security and anyone and anything else in the main hallways leading to the target.. and then wrecking the shuttle bays or capital docking spars to the point cutting them of and build a new replacement be faster then repairing , and then vanishing with nightmare talent into the stations 'depths' agen starting to trap the population on the station..
until nothing is leaving it as shuttle bays and e.v.a suits become tangled heaps of material as with buckled doors and burnt stains of organic rubber where ever a E.V.A suit should been and ripped open airlocks and mangled metal , by hand in some cases
with the docking spars for capital ships not much better as most airlocks hade their interior hatches torn apart ,or the super structure flat out ruined so trying to dock just nock a skyscraper sized pile of scrap into the station instead and rip open countless compartments as many many internal doors been either sabotaged or... torn open
making way for a new aspect of the nightmare for those trapped, as the population started to ''decrease'' to the point more often then not , whole habitant sections , trading avenues or warehouse districts become silent nightmare canvases of corpses and gore left to rot within them..
where they been butchered , or in some cases even intentionally left in ..postures.. hinting of the lingering populations helpless nature as species famoused for strength been left impaled on exposed superstructure beams gruesome displays of having been killed by blunt force trauma to the point you cant tell whom it was as their features is but mangled pulp , only what species they where...
or examples of those renowned for speed found at the end of gore splattered hallways giving them a good chance to try run... only with their limbs strewn along it pristine apart from how it appears as if they been ..ripped of... and tossed aside during its desperate flight , before the poor creature been pined to the floor in the ned and brutally swiftly killed by simply ripping out its internal organs ,yet with what ever limbs it used for motions left untouched..
and when the federal assets is approaching under flat out fleet escort as the entire system is ensured it be sent supplies ,but otherwise... put in quarantine and warned ,this is likely ..one.. single.. humans work so if anyone know of any other being held elsewhere in the system , regardless if sedated or behind force fields , think what happen if a survival instinct mode pack starts form..
with the federal police vessel having some extra passengers possibly a very stern human unofficial diplomat having a stone carved facial expression of ''you reap what you inspire''
perhaps having a cordial but cold conversation during approach ,that if this goess on much longer it wont matter if the federal agents government at last recognises sapience happens far sooner then space travle development , because there be such a large segment of humans out in the void with bottomless blood thirst due to trauma from their abduction lurking in captured shuttles , or flat out capital ships they lobotomised the AI of to obey and translate their direct neuron impulses to twist the automatic systems with
that they start to naturally form wolf packs with so much grief and outright hatred fuelling desire for vengeance at anything alien that it wont matter if every media you have scream apologies and a kings worth of compensation and help to be contacted by fellow humans.. they still keep roaming the void , with only one goal to grow strong enough be it by breeding or fleet assets to purge all alien civilization..if need by by butchering any of their own species that stand in the way
and said unofficial diplomat with their personal human security escort that might not be as fancy in tech as the federal alien staff on the ship but.... those faceless helments , hard angles of their armour and the fact they wear it and carry their guns as if made of papper and still able to move with blinding swiftness with it all if they so wish ,while alien soldiers struggle to carry just the hand guns alone.. painting an disturbing future if any such packs form regardless how small..
with the only thing heard from the station as they approach it trying to figure out what segment of it the rampaging human juvenile might be on or close to at the moment , is repeating distress calls
transmissions echoing gruesome last moments as hardware been left to broadcast looping the audio files recorded as little 'last ditch hide outs or lone survivors with body attached hardware where caught and interrupted in the middle of taking a moment to plead for aid from the rest of the system.. turning it into a truely nightmare worthy sight as com consoles in improvised barricaded traffic control center's flickers with screens splashed by body fluids as bodies where often ripped to pieces ..by hand.. ..or mangled corpses or flat out gore piles is left where they where catched for the com units to keep working as long as the battery half buried in gore lasts...
not to kill the thing onboard just to to throw E.V.A suits at some spot that they could make a desperate run for and then flat out just jump into the void for the slim chance to be picked up before the oxygen run out ...understanding.. that none other in the system wish to fly even close to the station now expecting a blood soaked human juvenile to lay in ambush and take their shuttle ,or ship.. and start turn the other smaller stations or moon mines and planet agriculture estates into mirrors of the same fore soaked horror that now infuses the walls of the station..
and then mabya third and fourth follow up ^^ one with military and espionage strategists having meetings to discus what few counter measures they have should any ships experience boarding by humans , or a planet experience ground combat
and the other.. a bit later , and some alien media corp wanting to make a movie or even 'series' about the 'name mega structure trade station butchery' ..only ,finding out as they get access to some of the classified reports and the visual records in them that their intent to make it a bit 'extra' gory to generate social media shock pr ...where leagues behind reality of it all aka why it all where classified ^^
