A San Francisco native, my first visit to the Steinhart at age 6 in 1949, it was also about the same time the built the Morrison Planetarium. I remember the seal habitat and those heavy bronze doors going inside so see the lethargic alligators. I was disappointed at the new Academy of Arts and Sciences, but then again, time changes everything.
I so much miss the old Steinhart Aquarium and the other parts of the Academy of Sciences that just swept you off your feet and activated your imagination by their exhibits. A huge marine shores exhibits with life-size seals and walruses, a tidal wave fish pool, a safari diorama, the fish round-about, geology gems/rocks, space exhibit, amazing mechanical dinosaur forest, indigenous peoples anthropology room, etc.. just stunning everywhere, and always crowded with people. They got rid of 3/4 of that and filled it with offices/labs off limits to visitors, crowds not like what they were; and today, I don't spend more than an hour there.
I do too. The aquarium made you feel small like a child, even as an adult. I loved the water fountain full of starfish. I’d spend hours there. Remember visiting and seeing a hole in the ground and the museum was gone. Really really miss it .
You did not mention this, George Lucas' HOWARD THE DUCK (1986) was actually filmed here at this SF Science Museum for only one quarter of the movie. Howard said this, "They know I am a phony, they know I'm a yo-yo! Can I bite your nose off with my super bill?"😆😂✌️
The old aquarium was a much much better collection, it was also historical site. They should have never torn down the Steinhart Aquarium and replaced it. Who is responsible for that decision?

Agreed. The new Lorenzo Piano debacle is a visual disaster.
So interesting to see insight into the past!

One of my favorite places! I love going to the aquarium and drawing the fish.
Cool to see about the history.
Great video!

My mother is a Steinhart from both sides, is there any genealogy from these Steinharts? My Mom's family was from Poland/Russia, not Bavaria.
