  • My mom has a very beautiful container garden. This year she experimented with growing potatoes in laundry baskets. How did this experiment work out? Well... you'll just have to watch and see....

Thank you for joining us on our journey. Several years ago our family moved back to a small homestead that's been in our family for many years. Our goal is to become as self sufficient as possible and get back to a simpler lifestyle. As we build our homestead, we're trying to fix up and use as much as we can from what my grandparents and great grandparents built. Not only does it save us time and money from having to build new from scratch, but there's just something special about being able to reuse something that was built by your grandparents back in the day. We just can't get ourselves to tear down anything if it has potential to be fixed up. We hope you'll enjoy following our journey as we work towards building our little homestead. We'll share videos on everything from caring for and raising animals, gardening, mistakes we've made and lessons learned, how-to tips, and what our day to day life is like. Be sure to subscribe to get our latest videos and follow us on www.humblelittlehomestead.com.

I'm only 64, but I broke my back a few years back so I have had to change the way I do things. Container gardening is the only way to go for me! It pacifys my need to garden without hurting myself. The container you used for your potatoes also makes a wonderful strawberry tower. I dream of the day I have tiny houses scattered across my 7 acres. My kids have gone off out of state, but I have other single women friends that want to live out here and help. It's only a matter of money. LOL, it's always my biggest stumbling block. Working towards it though. In the meantime I'm watching how others are turning sheds into homes. Many blessings to you and your family.

Using an aerated laundry hamper for container gardening is a work of pure genius. I’m going to try it.

What I’ve noticed with growing potatoes is that if you keep the roots fairly cool they grow better. I think that’s why you got less in your black pot because it heats them up too much and more with the white one with all the air holes. ❤️. Hopefully that tip helps you out in the future

Awesome! I think the root aeration in the laundry basket helped significantly to produce more potatoes.

I love this so much. My auntie Marg had a trailer and gardened very much like this, I am very much a no frills DIY gardener, I guess that's why I appreciate your moms approach. Bless her❤

Bob Randall, expert organic gardening teacher, had these tips on growing container blueberries: Use 100% sphagnum, commonly called peat or peat moss, in your container. Use a container unless your soil is acid and loose.
