- After coming down with a stomach virus, Luther Glenn became paralyzed. He was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome, a neurological disorder that can leave people paralyzed for weeks. According to researchers, about 80 percent of people who come down with Guillain-Barre will recover almost fully, while the rest never regain their abilities. Luther is one of those still dealing with the effects of the condition.

Don't you give up. No matter what. There's still more for you to learn and experience. I lived in that chair. I had an oxygen tank strapped to the back of it. I felt that creeping death come over me and I was told I'd likely never walk again. I felt so much of the pain I thought I'd choke on it. You know what you do with that pain and frustration? You hold it TIGHT. You keep it right there where you can see it. Because it lets you know you're still alive, and as long as you're alive you can still fight it. Now, over a decade later, I walk. I smile. I love. I feel. You got this. The biggest mistake I ever made, was listening to them tell me what I could and couldn't do. You fight it with every ounce you got, and don't you ever forget what it looked like in the beginning in that hospital. Because that's the start of the journey. And every time you look back on that, you'll see just how far you've come. You *built* that road. You *cleared* that path. Fight for what you want. Good luck.
Thank you for those powerful words i too am in recovery from gbs some days are are hard fight them i come acrossed such powerful words and gain strenght i realize thier are many people suffering from this and other more devastating injuries and diseases and i dont feel alone any more lord jesus bless you all and speed your recoveries
Sad to see this guy still suffering. My mom had this and almost died - hooked up to respirators and feeding tubes for 6 months. Six months after she left the hospital she was pregnant with me and was fully recovered. She still has no idea what triggered her GBS.
Praying for you Luther for complete healing and restoration in the mighty name of Jesus. Nerve sheaths and nerves be restored, muscles be restored, sensation be restored, mobility and hand function be completely restored in Jesus mighty name.

My husband developed Guillian Barre Syndrome and Miller Fischer Variet a week after going to the doctor for an upper respiratory infection. He was working one day and paralyzed from the neck down the next. His lungs and esophagus also became paralyzed. He controlled his wheelchair with his head for a year. It's been over 6 years and he is a quadriplegic. GBS is a thief that robs some people of their quality of life. My husband was a workaholic but is now spending his retirement in a wheelchair. Hopefully one day doctors will discover a way to regenerate the damaged nerves caused by illnesses like GBS.
@@aliciacaldera3175 Yes, he is still a quadriplegic. He can not move his feet, toes or ankles at all. Like you, he wears braces and can walk on level surfaces with a walker that has four wheels. If he falls he has no way of preventing it, nor does he have the upper body strength to grab something. He uses his motorized wheelchair at home and in the yard. He has limited use of his hands and can't make a fist. While he has had very little improvement in the past couple of years, we are extremely greatful for what he can do.
Don't get discouraged because like you said everyone's recovery is different and I hope you recover fully.
@@sharonw.9091 Sadly, Peripheral Nerves are irreparable beyond the ordinary capacity of a living being, i.e., as of now no methods are there to repair the damaged nerves. But loved ones like you can make a difference😇🙏🙏
@@Florideanstarch It's been almost 10 years since my husband became sick. We have accepted the permanent nerve damage but choose to focus on what he can do rather than what he can't.
You inspire the others who are recovering as well. We all fight together.

Sending my prayers to Mr. Glenn. Stay strong. I hope you get well soon. My mother had Guillain-Barre syndrome in her 20s. She had ascending and descending paralysis and would have died if not for the doctors and nurses who cared for her. After months in the hospital and years of physical therapy, she recovered though the experience left her weak and she has trouble walking.

I got GBS after recovering from Covid in feb 2022. I am in the recovery period. Weakness of lower body parts numbness of face ,feet, trunk and hands, unable to swallow well, speak, can close my eyes and yes the burning pain. I go to bed with it and wake up with it. I am a front line worker an ER nurse to be exact. This thing almost kill me. I just want to hug all of you and send my prayers. STAY STRONG!!! Yes. I am fully vaccinated and boosted. Same goes for the flu vax for 20+ years.
Why would you get a vaccine and booster with such a weak immune system? You had covid and survived!
It takes time , sometime a very long time , but you will make it , just stay positive and most important FIND a proper rehabilitation centre .

Keep pushing brother i suffered from gbs in 2007 when i was 12 years old. Expected to recover 100% like everyone else but i did not but very thankful forevermore keep pushing and thug it out much love !

i am sorry that your progression is not what they told you. i dont know how u feel but i know it must be very frustrating. i too was a victim of this disease. i have GBS with miller fisher variant. i pray u fully recover one day! take care & be strong minded!

It’s so hard to deal with disease that you don’t have much time and energy for worrying about the why of it. I feel for you brother. It’s especially hard on our loved ones. It’s almost as if they carry what’s left and that can be a hell of a burden that is not consciously chosen. The distance between those two states of two people coping is where love becomes Herculean and a miracle for someone inflicted. Indescribable from the outside and so intimate between the two. That has been my experience with MS and a wonderful marriage.

I feel for you my friend, in 1976 I was struck down with GBS, I was very very fit and strong, I was left totally paralysed , died twice revived twice, saw things that I shouldn't of seen until I was ready, Then I was back, in so much pain that you can not explain ! After months of struggling falling hurting myself, I removed the calipers, still had dropped feet but compensated with my gait very little help from physio, though they did try! My toes still don't move my fingers are useless I can't have children, But I fought it and didn't let it win! I still suffer inward, nobody sees my struggle, but I win every day!!! And so will you !! I've had to deal with this symptom a total of three times in my life. Twice as a different form (Brickerstaff Encephalitis). It sure can be hard to deal with but hang in there. Keep up the good spirits
How are you now ? What did they do to help you ?
I had it in January 2022 and got over it pretty quick with physical therapy. Was in the hospital for 6 days. It’s April now and all I have is muscle twitch once in a while and my feet burn after being on them for a long period of time. I hope this guy will get back to normal life
I also recovered fairly quickly after suffering this disease in August 2022. It started 48 hours after I contracted Covid. 6 weeks later I have some weakness in my left leg and arm but am much better. It was very frightening and for a moment I thought I was going to be paralyzed for ever.

👍I had Guillain Barre 41 years ago when I was 20. I spent 3 months on a ventilator. It took me 9 months to get released. Today, I'm 59. I still have many damaged parts. My hands are in rough shape as well as my legs from the knee down to my feet.

Many thanks Luther, for posting your story. I spent 4 months in hospital from severe case of GBS. Some healing, after effects remain for more healing. Never lose hope. I wish you best in healing, and will keep you in my prayers.
Did you got any vaccine that triggered aside from infection?
@@rosea1021 the likely trigger of GBS in my case was an outpatient surgery two months before onset of symptoms.
GBS/MMNCB is hell and deliberating,physiology socially mentally financially.5yrs on still ongoing muscle atrophy essential tremors balance issues. I must be the 20% not to reach my goals of walking unaided 🙏🧑🏼🦽👨🦯 best wishes all suffering

my boyfriend is in the hospital now theyv have just diagnosed this, he is terrified...he woke up on morning with pins and needles and numbness in his limbs, today he moved his toes slightly but then the numbness came back...the doctors are optimistic wev caught it in time but it is so scary hes a scaffolder and always worked hard outside
I pray things turned out okay for your bf's GBS. I was just diagnosed with this last week, and I was lucky that pins, needles, and cramping were the only symptoms I had.

I am going through this. Last 4 months it's status quo...not getting better of getting worse. Forcing myself to use the walker. Both legs feel like sand bags...
My name is Eniola Alex, i live in lagos, Nigeria.. I am 20 years old.. I was diagnosed with GBS - Acute flaccid paralysis secondary to viral encephaliti. It started 2016, i had a different symptom entirely.. I was at intensive care unit for 6 months and later was taken to the ward before my discharge where i was on the wheel chair and.. It been a journey of recovering since then. And i am yet to recover fully. Currently like 40 % . I am so worried and tired
Eniola keep fighting , do exercise everyday without pushing to much but never give up , gbs is a beast and you need to keep going in order to don't get worst . You still very young and you can improve . I hope the best for you ....
Eniola,don’t give up,I got GBS in 3-2015 still recovering try to find a place where u can workout in an underwater treadmill manual or automatic that will speed up ur recovery u must land with knees bend on ur steps so your quad muscles will get stronger a lot reps will be done but it will help recover faster.
my dad got diagnosed this shit today. It's hearbreaking I don't know how to feel. At least my dad does wasn't paralized in the hands or arms. Just a little tingle. I got a disk herniation a few years ago and neuropatic pain/damage is no joke.

@@franciscofeest6691 so glad to hear he's better . Sometimes I feel I have this . It's been a year now I deal with lots of numbing / paralysis feelings throughout my body . My neurologist says this isn't GBS but has never tested me for it . All my symptoms started after taking a Flouroquinolone Antibiotic a year ago .
How did your dad find out he had this and what were the signs in the beginning ?
@@Myworldmymind908 he started feeling a tingling sensation in his feet. After that he started losing sensation/control in his lower and then upper legs. Five days later after the first onset he was unable to walk or get up by himself. The symptoms manifested very quickly. It was similar to when you have radicular pain. Maybe you have nerve damage in your neck or lower back. Have you had your back checked up? Do you exercise or lift heavy weights? Sometimes that lower back pain can lead into degenerative disk disease.
@@franciscofeest6691 I do have some stenosis that has showed up on my MRIs . He told me my symptoms tho aren't coming from that . I get the weirdest sensation like when I swallow I don't feel my throat muscles and even my stomach muscles I don't feel at times . Then my legs will feel like they're losing coordination of some sort . When this all first began I immediately thought this was the onset of GBS but then again they say it spreads rapidly if so . And I been dealing with these symptoms a year now so it's pretty strange to me

Did you get a flu shot a couple of weeks before this happened. I HAD guillain barre Syndrome a milder case but I have found out what is causing it from flu vaccines. If you want to know what I did, let me know.
My father died of gbs 5 years ago after getting his first ever flu shot. It took about 6 weeks to go from numbness in feet up to not being able to breathe. He was undiagnosed until the day he died when they got back the results from his spinal tap, but it was too late. For an entire month they claimed he was just getting old. Doctors don't know a lot about this, so if you are lucky enough to be diagnosed that's great. If it was after a flu shot, get a good lawyer!

After 20 years. Still can’t walk better. After 24 medical surgeries. And using a orthopedic braces ntp walk. I’m still falling. I was 8!yrs old I’m 44 yrs i can’t move my foot fingers.
It took six yrs for me to bearly move my toes,and with unhinged afos I was able to stand,whts helping me now it walking in the water the pool.get a portable treamill set it on incline and that will stimulate the nerves and you’ll get stronger,I hope it helps,I’m sorry it’s been taking so long to recover but I blame a lot on physical therapy centers they just don’t have pool electric treadmill’s.
