    Corrections/clarifications:
    02:33 This should say: “parts of the ride were nearly half a century old”, not the ride in its entirety. See 09:15 for clarification - it was later discovered that the owner had “bought a replacement which was more than 50 years old.” (Evening Standard, 26/02/73).

      The post-war phase was fraught with numerous household and childhood dangers that required a much closer look, investigations, and regulations. (Such as chemistry sets & gas lights & kitchen appliances. In retrospect it was sometimes apparent that the populace survived hazards by a narrow margin. Eventually the standard was to assure safety & regulation. Surprising sometimes that humanity survived as well as it has..
      I was in high-school in the USA when this horrible event took place.....and it certainly did hit the news on both sides of the pond...followed by many, many more incidences of tightening standards of safety for children and the general population.

Especially considering that this channel made its first video over a year ago and has only made 2 since then! That's pretty ridiculous given their subscriber count, I wouldn't subscribe to a channel that puts out 3 videos in over a year. So I'd rather say overrated.

    • @SadisticSenpai61
      @SadisticSenpai61 2 роки тому +55

      I mean, I'm not surprised. It's actually fairly normal for these kinds of incidents. Even disasters with much bigger death tolls regularly see those responsible acquitted. It's kinda insane just how much of a joke the legal systems in first world nations can be when the wealthy and well-connected are on trial for a disaster that killed or injured mostly poor people.
      It's not just in the UK or the US either. It's a reoccurring theme across Europe and former British colonies as well (such as Canada and Australia). I really makes me wonder what's so great about "Western Democracy" when our legal systems have repeatedly shown that the lives of poor people don't matter and the wealthy almost always get away with their nonsense - usually in the interest of "saving money." If the wealthy ever do face any kind of legal penalties, it's usually some paltry fine that they can pay with their pocket change.
      Not that non-"Western Democracies" are any better. They tend to either pretend nothing happened or put all the blame on some poor person who was unfortunate enough to be too low-ranked in the chain of command to have any actual power while those that actually made the decisions slap each other on the back for successfully blaming someone else.

    I worked at a major amusement park in Missouri, USA, from 1975-77. I was there when an accident happened on a ride that killed some people. It is amazing how the park immediately went into defense mode to protect themselves. They claimed it was checked every morning and found to be safe. But their “checking” consisted of starting it up and riding it across the park. It was a lie. They got a huge roller coaster in 1976 and the checks they did on it were about the same. Fortunately they never had a big disaster on it like this, but that is a matter of luck. Many times people on their coaster died during the ride. I saw them taken off and they were white as a sheet. Clearly they were dead. But they put the body in an ambulance and later the news reports were that they died on the way to the hospital. That way it didn’t look so bad on the park.

  • @CarolinaCycloneJames

    Its tragic that this event happened. But it also shows how safe modern coasters are. The fact that the largest desth toll was 5 is insane when you factor how tall new coasters are plus how many people it can hold. Of course all these new safety features were learned from terrible accidents that involved deaths. Things like backup lock outs for chain lifts and inspections and test runs all have been invented due to deaths and injuries.

    • @alaeriia01
      @alaeriia01 Рік тому +9

      In order to have a death toll higher than four, you would typically need a catastrophic structural failure, as most coaster cars hold four people. I'm also surprised the record is 5, as I can think of a few flat ride incidents where there have been double digits of casualties; interestingly, these are almost always a Chinese knockoff of a Zamperla ride operating at a funfair.

      one time a tall coaster malfunctioned and stopped on its way up. Patrons had to make an emergency escape, putting themselves on a flight of stairs next to the coaster car pulling mechanism. This is easier said than done - you're sitting in a car that's inclined at a fairly steep angle AND you're 50 meters up. The stairs aren't most comfortable either and there are 30 people scared shitless around you. Definitely not a pleasant experience, even if nobody got injured in this.

    This channel is going to be big no doubt in my mind! This is quite literally real horror, at least to me.
    It’s the human emotions and fears and the reality of what this awful events were like for the victims and rescuers or observers. It also reveals the horror of what leads to some of this awful events by revealing the human Evils that were the cause. I guess what I’m trying to say is to me the roller coaster crashing in itself isn’t the most horrifying thing it’s the real witness recounting of what actually happened and the horror and fear in the people there as they experienced it that is truly horrifying. This channel is so interesting snd genuinely makes me feel uneasy from the stories they tell but I love it. Whoever is behind this, all the people the writers researchers and narrator or if it’s all one person or many, you have my admiration. I might also add I have adhd and usually documentary/informative longer videos are hard for me to watch or follow along but these videos keep me focused and wanting to know more. The visuals are beautiful and the layout and process of giving information is amazing. The narrator is amazing as well, such a soothing voice and doesn’t sound like a robot but a human.

    I remember having a major fear of rollercoasters after hearing about an incident at Alton towers where a carriage on one ride stopped and another slammed into it.
    Since then I think I’ve been on 2 rollercoasters with that thought still lingering in the back of my mind

    • @the3whiteys
      @the3whiteys Рік тому +8

      Yeah honestly rollercoasters are like safer than 90%+ of other things on the planet.
      the smiler at alton was a human error, they didn't listen too the rides safety features and presumed it was a glitch sent out the next set of people when there was actually a stuck cart. But if you look at rollercoaster safety features you'd be amazed

    • @the3whiteys

    • @alaeriia01

      @@the3whiteysCoaster College has a video on that incident. The short answer is that a shift change and general chaos caused a maintenance worker to override multiple safety systems. This is the sort of thing that cannot happen under normal operations; overriding the block system requires a maintenance worker with a special key.
