- A behind the scenes glance at some of my latest personal work. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
We shot this using 2 Profoto B10+ heads. I used the Profoto above the subject and using the Profoto connect app, I could change the power settings if needed remotely. We used a Godox flash head on a big octa softbox in front of our model as a fill light. Combined with polly boards and a silver reflector to finish it off.
I was tethered to Capture One using a Tether Tools tether cable and it was all shot on a Canon R6.
Shout out to the team on this one:

*Welcome to my UA-cam channel where I share behind the scenes videos, practical reviews and chat about all things photography from my perspective as a "commercial" photographer / wannabe digital nomad.
Really enjoyed this video Rich, good balance of BTS and explanation. Also, I'm very envious of your super speedy 4-hour test shoot!
Thanks so much! The driving force really was because the studio did 4 hour or 8 hour bookings. And 4 hours was much kinder on the wallet 😁😁
Good Stuff Richie, cracking work mate keep it up
Cheers Stu!!
Such a real vlog and so stylish @ same time! So much good prep and organization... And philosophy (esthetics?) is lovely. Niche is _how_ you perceive something, more than _what_ , makes sense! e.g., I know how I see a teaspoon 😍since I use it many times a day (coffees).
Thanks Yvonne! Haha, me too, I need to start keeping a teaspoon in my pocket!
Aha cuz ur on the go more than I am! Yes, to illustrate your point - I would probably take a photo of a teaspoon on a regal little cushion - because i luv coffee so very much - As in the idea that our niche is the HOW you perceive a thing@@RichMaciverPhoto
Great job Richie! I really appreciate seeing you take your own scrim with you to the studio 🤗
Haha, of course!! Thanks man!
It's a super lightweight scrim by the way! amzn.to/3ujlv6B
Love your vids Rich. Agree with visual style being your niche and thus being able to apply it to anything however it sometimes becomes difficult when marketing yourself because you're never really known for any particular thing?
Hey Chris, thanks so much!
Yeah it’s not the easiest sell. I think your style needs to be really strong and highly developed to pull this off - but I’d imagine that’s something nearly all working photographers aim for (a unique, personal style).
Some incredible photographers who do this well are Christopher Anderson, Pia Riverola and Seb Zanella just to name a few (check them out on IG!).
They’re use of light, colour and composition are all really strong and they all have a diverse portfolio.
For art director I’d imagine you’d be super confident you would know roughly how it’s going to turn out. Whether the commission is a portrait or a landscape.
Ultimately your visual style becomes the thing you market. But, it’s extremely difficult.
@@RichMaciverPhoto Thanks for the recommends ... these are great photographers and brilliant examples of applying style to genre, it can be done!
Thanks for the video. How did the the Godox flash talk to the profoto trigger? And does a studio typically supply the C stands and large tripod like support stand? Thanks again for the informative BTS
Hey Simon, thanks for watching! Most flashes have a “slave” mode. Which basically means it watches for other flashes and triggers at the same time - still blows my mind tbh … like … how does it watch and trigger at EXACT the same time haha.
Some studios will supply basic stands and maybe a light or two - some times they’ll charge for it and sometimes they won’t. Just depends. Hope that makes sense?
Thank you. I had wondered if there was a 'slave' mode. I guess it's much more economical to use Godox as the third light. If there was one other observation/query from an educational point of view
it would be could you explain why the scrim wins over umbrellas? Thanks again though. Your videos take us to the shoot in very helpful way.
@simonvail458 if you think that the last thing the light passes through has the most influence. So I’m pushing a soft light (from the umbrellas) through another big scrim. Essentially creating a massive very soft softbox above the model. Hope that makes sense??
