Japan guys are really great making their own on such different music styles as Afro beat, danzón and cumbia. It’s already the coolest band in Japan nowadays.
My grandmother used to sing that Aizu Bandaisan a LOT! (We're from Fukushima.) Minyo Crusaders do it so hilariously good. I can't stop from smiling and laugh every time I hear the singing come in because I can hear my grandmother singing along to it in my head with this song... But instead the old-fashioned folk song from my childhood, it's with this cumbia/latin jazz instrumentation. I love it. These guys are incredible.
So glad Minyo crusaders made on Tiny Desk. I have been following them the last couple of years and have felt they deserved more exposure in the west than they were getting. Go buy their album. It’s awesome and helps the band! Thanks tiny desk!
I'm really liking these Tiny Desk at home concerts. I hope they continue for a long time. I'm really digging this band. Their music is fun and they have a terrific aesthetic.
I am a half-Japanese-American, and this music really speaks to me. It feels like a combination of the music my grandma was always playing when I was a kid (Enka), and some gorgeous, David-Lynchian rock music video meets old-western-dream. I am so happy I found this music! New favorite band for sure
1. Incredible stuff! I am in love! You are all such devoted and talented musicians. Thank you sharing your art with us all! 2. As someone who deeply longs for unity, love, forgiveness and understanding between Japan and Korea, Minyo vocalzations (referred to by THE SAME NAME in both languages) contain shared elements! This is such a wonderful reminder of the shared history between these two amazing faces of our human family.
Wow!! This is amazing and very emotional. It's also very interesting how these rhythms are so Latin alike. Almost like two extremes of the planet being totally connected by music. Maybe what we know as 'latin rhythms' is actually a result from other ancient music from somewhere else. Who knows!
We indeed miss seeing bands like this playing live, and dancing to those grooves🎶...it is lovely to see different cultural influences tastefully put together 💛
Something new, something different and something that's very, very good indeed. No idea what they're singing about but whatever it is it put a smile on my face and sent me off looking for more. EXCELLENT .... Thank you!
You guys are amazing musicians!! You're truly pioneers, your songs are a wonderful mix of the traditional songs (Minyo) and contemporary rhythms, it is really unique!! I don't have words really... Thank you so much!! I'm following you on Spotify and will keep supporting you anyway I can
Minyo Crusaders: Is this a pan of the Folk Crusaders, a extemely popular Japanese group around 1970 inspired by the folk revival in the US, as Minyo means folk songs in Japanese.
Wow! many commenters are MISSING the point of the first tune entirely. This is Japanese Minyo singing over an African Fela Kuti backdrop. Which is a sick concept! ( And by 'sick' i mean "AWESOME" ). How can y'all NOT feel FELA KUTI's spirit in this music? WOW!
Saw them live doing these songs in their first public appearance in National Marina, Maryland this past Saturday. Kicking off Cherry Blossom Week in Washington DC.
Such a pleasantly unique blend of sounds - it's like this complimentary blend of Latin, native American chanting, funk, and 60s surf, among other things. Very interesting and refreshing.

Is anyone else hearing a bit of Afro-beat in their sound? Love it!
Totally! Now that you say it!
Yes yes yes. This is beautiful
Some of the group members actually organise Felabration in Japan, hence the Afro-beat influence.
@@SamuelAkinbo Oh, I will have to check that out. Thanks for the tip!
Cumbia is derived from African beats.
This is awesome. Thank you!

No need to worry about your English. Your music speaks volumes! Great job!

Hay mucha influencia africana y árabe en los llamados ritmos latinos
Afro beats........Latino drums came from Africa
No es una coincidencia, esta banda siempre se ha interesado por la cumbia.

Que buen ritmo. Traen el alma de samurai mezclada con alma de latinoamericano.
My family and I saw them at WOMAD in New Zealand last summer. Easily the highlight of the festival. Great to see on NPR!!
We indeed miss seeing bands like this playing live, and dancing to those grooves🎶...it is lovely to see different cultural influences tastefully put together 💛

Check out "Orquesta de la Luz"...

Fantastic! My head is still spinning. So many sounds. So much tradition. Just so good.
Oh my gosh, go Japan! This was like a fusion of acid-jazz-Egyptian-traditional soap opera Japan. Loved it!! ♥ ♥ ♥

Love everything about this. I haven't played the saxophone in ages and these folks make we want to run out and buy one again.

Impeccably performed, beautiful and complex music. Visibly and audibly pleasing. And very dance-able!
Wow. Just wow!
Such a pleasantly unique blend of sounds - it's like this complimentary blend of Latin, native American chanting, funk, and 60s surf, among other things. Very interesting and refreshing.
Couldn't agree more
