Katniss’ meltdown when prims cat appeared was perfectly done. Going from hating the cat because she only saw it as another mouth to feed, then seeing it as a part of Prim when she hugged him was done really well

In the book Katniss explains why she choose Peeta "That what I need to survive is not Gale's fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that. So after, when he whispers, "You love me. Real or not real?" I tell him, "Real.

I connect that with the dandelion she saw after her dad passed away. In the first book, she mentions that Peeta burns bread for her and they have their first meal in a long time. Then the next day, she sees a dandelion and it’s what gives her hope for the first time since her dads death.

I feel like Gale is the male version of Katniss, while Peeta is refreshing. Katniss has the typically masculine attributes of a character (strong, reserved) and Peeta has the typically feminine attributes (social skills, creative, kindness). I just love this trope subversion. Also, as much as killing someone is terrible, i just can't blame him for losing control and accidentally killing a team mate. He would never have done it conciously , he had clearly lost control and was still in the progress of unprogramming himself.

    • @whitenoisereacts

You excuse him killing and trying to kill/hurt ppl on many occasions as merely "progress of unprogramming" really.... You cant overlook the fact that he murdered someone by pleading that he was kind before or he was something else before (GALE said that he would gladly take the bullet instead of being the capitols slave and recording those propaganda vids) , just cant look at him as an innocent guy, dilly dallying so if she couldn't have married him for that ,that's not the point anyway according to me , he should have been treated completely before being thrown in with "the star squad" to do what exactly , show ppl hes now with the rebellion I think that the rebellion's members would want his head before any explanation (Remember how blood thirsty everyone was and how pres. snow was publicly lynched ). Plutarch said that he was weaponized by the capitol so....... Poor thinking on coins part to just let him leave , but To the main point if he was allowed to leave the hospital then technically he was "cured" to the best of medical sciences ability hence the Mental issue you stated doesn't hold , he "killed" in cold blood he wasn't threatened and not once but on multiple occasions he tried to cause harm or kill ppl around him , one case may state : maybe he "relapsed" or something hmm... if that was true would you want to have kids with such a man , would you like to sleep on the same bed where he could just "relapse" and kill you with a pillow?? the neurosis or psychosis which Peeta endured is tragic indeed and deserves empathy , a care center not just letting him free to just live his life.. his mental damage wasn't a choice but his actions may as well be .. as I said he was technically "cured" but was not cured ...in the modern world too there are cases of psychosis even after treating in hospitals such patients are shifted to care centers to placate them not left out to do god knows what . Point of matter is that there were better options to choose from than Peeta and Gale. Katniss deserves better Peta was too far gone according to me.

He is what she needed to be able to go on.

I feel like book didn't even give Gale chance to be actual part of this love triangle. Movies keep it more secretive, but in books after first part there was no way Katniss would end up with Gale. The only question was if she would stay with mentally unstable Peeta or go her own way.

  • @biaaraujo472
    @biaaraujo472 3 роки тому +126

Honestly, I never thought that there was really a love triangle in the series. I'll be saying from the books perpective mainly: right from the start of one of the first things that Katsniss says about Gale is that she doesn't have any love interest in him. She even clears out that she does feel jealous about him sometimes, but because he is a valuable hunting partner, and considering that she's been through starvation that's comprehensible. The times in the next books that she demonstrates any romantic interest in him were not genuine at all, even Gale notices that she only kisses him when he is suffering. Basically she feels sorry for him because it wasn't a mutual romance, but since she cares so much about him she even tries to pretend that he is the one. But we all know that's not true, even him. So I never belived for one second that she had feelings for both of them, for me she always loved Gale as a brother, while Peeta was the one she could share her life with.

Katniss couldn’t bc it was never about revolution for her - she’s a survivalist end keeping her family alive was always her first and utmost priority.
She’s basically like the average parent - and the average parent is 100% concerned about their offspring/dependents - NOT the world. Most parents are willing to suffer with injustice so long as their family is safe. Though Prim is her sister it's obvious who the parent is in the home - Katniss is the hunter and the provider, and she takes care of her weak mother and her sister as a mom would.
But everyone isn’t like that. Some people are willing to risk it all - especially when they have nothing left. Gale isn’t the enemy. He’s a fighter and he has nothing to lose. He’s not bad he’s just not like Katniss.

I always saw Peeta and Gale as a metaphor for peace and war. Gale wants to fight for what's right and sometimes it doesn't matter to him what it takes to destroy the system. Peeta was pushed into everything just like Katniss, he never wanted to be in the revolution and he didn't even think that he would survive the first games. Katniss has a bit of both of them inside her, that's why she goes from one to the other depending on how she feels. In the end, after so much suffering, she realizes that she needs peace and someone to show her that life is still beautiful, that's why she stays with Peeta when she could've stayed by herself in district 12. If she had stayed with Gale, she would remember what happened to Prim every time she would look at his face. I think it's a great ending. She never wanted the revolution to happen, she just wanted her sister safe and she failed, but life goes on.

The thing is, though, they are BOTH irrevocably mentally and psychologically scarred for life. They deserve love just as everyone does, however, any chances of them finding love in another person outside of the other would be astronomically low due to their experiences.
Sure, you could make the case that that's not always the case and people with heavy mental baggage and damage can still find happiness with other (normal) people; however, with Katniss and Peeta, they wouldn't be able to function normally as they used to without each other after the amount of trauma they went through and without tons and TONS of therapy over the years. (Let's not forget she tried to kill herself almost immediately with a nightlock pill when she was alone after she assassinated Coin.)

That weapon was his idea, his brainchild, he may not have pulled the trigger per say at that moment, but his character was the visionary behind that weapon and its brutality... the deaths it caused are just as much his as they are Coins.
I guess I just found it interesting that you didn’t feel as passionate about that as you did Peeta.
The biggest difference between Katniss and Gale was that even in war and battle Katniss did not lose her humanity, whereas Gale’s hatred for the capitol stole away his humanity and in the end he played an integral part in killing someone who he had promised to protect. There was no going back after that.

The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that. Personally when I read the books I felt like Katniss was actually into Peeta from the second book due to them being in the games together and him helping her to sleep in the midst's of trauma. She really admired him as a person as well and he had everything she lacked. I felt like she needed him. And Peeta's character was a lot better in the books though he was good in the movies too. If I'd watched the movies without reading the books maybe I would have liked Gale more especially in the first one since well . . . Hemsworth is super hot.
Anyway I really felt like the war was so much and Katniss never wanted any of this. She was not invested in the love triangle at all so in the books (Book 2 mostly) I felt like Gale was a little bit annoying trying to be with her and getting kind of upset when she never really showed romantic interest in him. Peeta on the other hand at least had reason to believe she was into him and was a bit more warranted in his hurt feelings of her not reciprocating his love initially. From the second book she had really seemed to need Peeta and as Gale said Katniss would pick who she could not survive without. She and Gale had a lot of similar traits and when I read the books I finished feeling like he somehow inadvertently caused Prim's death. And the whole point of this was to protect Prim. That was the reason Katniss entered the games and it was all she wanted. The literal only thing she wanted. Revolution be damned. And even though it obviously was not Gale's fault there was no way he could come back from that in my head.
God I sobbed right through reading Finnick's death. I reread the section over and over again to see if I somehow misread and he didn't actually die. It was heartbreaking. He'd just gotten MARRIED for Gad's sake! And then I was INCONSOLABLE when Prim died. My fourteen year old self was destroyed. It was so much worse than Rue's death and I had stayed up in the dark crying over that for hours.

the lovetriangle in hunger games is PERFECT. its so well nuanced, and its not a romance story. its a story about revolution, with romance in it. peeta and gale symbolize so much more than just two guys that love katniss. peeta is the soft and kind light in a dark world, the hope that life can go on, even from the first interaction when he gave her bread while she was starving. gale is a protector, always aiming for survival and for vengeance/justice. gale and katniss grew close because he protected her and her family, when she was hungry for vengeance and survival. staying with gale is like staying with her past, which she wants to forget all about. after the war, when she no longer has to worry about surviving, but living, she chooses peeta because he is her reminder that life goes on.

One (non-spoiler) detail I like from the prequel novel is Snow's self-awareness to being somewhat obsessive, and how controlling things makes him feel more at ease. Excerpt: _"The shirt. The shirt. His mind could fixate on a problem like that - anything, really - and not let go. As if controlling one element of his world would keep him from ruin. It was a bad habit that blinded him to other things that could harm him. A tendency toward obsession was hardwired into his brain and would likely be his undoing if he couldn't learn to outsmart it."_ (BoSaS p.7) This personality inclination, plus the story that ensues in the prequel, is what really explains his intimate conflict with Katniss as an opposing and uncontrollable spirit. And ultimately was his undoing what with overestimating Katniss/underestimating the rebels and Coin.
Like you guys said, I also appreciate how they ended this love triangle. Collins made it more philosophically based than *Katniss: "oop well one's dead I guess I'll take the other one then"* lol.
Also what they didn't mention in the films which you may have remembered from reading the books is that Katniss and Peeta, besides painting, baking, and hunting, they waited ten or fifteen years before having kids, they still suffered from ptsd by that point (especially Peeta), and they founded a new medicine/pharmaceutical production facility, thus re-building the foundation for a new District 12. The Capitol tourist attractions of the past Hunger Games arenas were also stripped down, and memorials for the fallen tributes/victor victims were set up in place of each one.
Edit: The remaining victors vote scene showed the obvious nays: Beetee, Annie, and Peeta, the obvious yay with Enobaria the last D.2 career tribute who is trying to get on the winning side's good side, a gray yay with Johanna who became spitefully sociopathic, and Katniss and Haymitch who only agreed in order to gain favor with and kill Coin because of her now obvious corruption.

    Just to make sure:
Katniss would have never ever honestly voted "Yes" and stood behind those Hunger Games.
That is just not how she is. The movie might not have made it clear enough but one of the reasons why Katniss is the symbol of this revolution is because the people see that she has the right amount of anger and hate but at the same time, despite all the pain she had to go through, she is not like Gale. She can still care. We see that in district two with the nut. The way she ran towards those poor injured and traumatized people who escaped through the tunnel. Her own father died in a mine accident. Gales father too. District 12 is coal. She grew up with this lifestyle and the fear that comes along having loved ones work in the mines. Even Gale worked in the mines as well after he became 18. It is telling that he came up with this plan and Katniss was completely against it. Then came the compromise with the escape tunnel. But even then she could not stand it. Seeing the survivors, understanding their pain, being afraid they will maybe getting shot by "her side" because "an injured animal lashes out". So she ran towards the enemy. In the end, yes someone did fire a bullet at her but not the person she spoke with and everyone saw this fantastic side of her. Even Snow knew right away that Katniss was not only not dead, but more dangerous than ever before because more and more people would join the revolution.
So there is no way Katniss would have stood by, watching innocent good people (and not just people - children) like Snows innocent and nice granddaughter go into the games.
And it is even more brilliant that Haymitsch knows all this about her. He saw all of her actions and emotions. He trusts her. So when she voted "Yes" he knew there must be a damn good reason. So he backed her up. Katniss did it 100% to gain Coins trust. Had Katniss voted "No" Coin most certainly would have not allowed her to kill Snow or even be near her. She saw her as a threat anyway and would be smart enough to know that Katniss would one day question why Snow bombed the children from the capitol. His own people. And then...
But if she voted " Yes". Well, then she must be a Gale persona. And someone like that, with enough blood on her hands after those Games with the Capitol children.... That is someone Coin might be able to control.
This is just sooo soooo sooo well done.

The thing about the love triangle in these movies is that it’s not about the love - not really. Katniss having to choose between Gale and Peeta is about choosing what they represent, in the simplest of terms “peace” vs “war”
Gale is about the anger and vengeance, the things you do in war and what it makes of you. He is justified in his actions but in the end, ends up hurting her. Inadvertently or not, he invented the weapons that killed Prim. Meanwhile Peeta, even in this movie when it seems he’s so far gone, is all about healing. Finding peace, growing flowers in ashes, picking up the pieces and putting himself back together as best he can manage.
So in the end, choosing Peeta is not about “which boy will I choose”, it’s about “what do I want, what do I need” and I think that’s what makes the love triangle work - it’s used as a device to convey a message, not just for the sake of having a love triangle.
Two things I really appreciate about the ending in the books that are a little muted but still visible in the movies:
First, neither Katniss nor Peeta make it out of the story wholly unscathed. It is clear that, even years later, they struggle with the aftermath of the games and the rebellion. I don’t think I’ve read another YA novel that let its heroes be that permanently damaged, and I think that adds to the realism and humanity of the story.
Second of all, the fact that Katniss has children. It can be easily disregarded as a typical “and then they got married and had a family and everything was fine” ending, but in the context of this world, it is really significant. In the books, Katniss was adamant, several times, that she would never have children, because of the fear of the reaping and the games. So to show her having kids in the end really drives home the fact that that is no longer true and that the next generation will never have to deal with the horror of the capitol.

How can anyone be Team Gale? He is hawt okay but he never think about others... she called him to run away with his family and Peeta and he was like YIKES HE IS COMMING WITH USS?? NO WAAY.... and then "oh I should have gone". He literally helped kill Prim without knowing because he was biased.
Peeta ALWAYS LOVED HER and didn't cared about she maybe liking Gale... He was like "I can be your friend, you don't have to love me, but you don't have to hate me" while Gale was "You never kissed me like you kissed him blabla"
    Gale sucks lmao

I remember when I first read this series, I switched from team Gale to team Peeta when Gale came up with the delayed explosion idea, because it was part of the downward slope of anger that he'd been on for a while. That suggestion, once I realized he actually meant it, told me he was no longer the good person we knew from the first book. Yes, war is always ugly and no side is ever perfect, but there are some lines you don't cross, and attacking medics in the middle of treating the wounded is one of those lines. If the enemy doesn't respect those lines, then you have to all the more, because there's no point in defeating the enemy if you become just like them along the way. I understood why Gale became so angry and ruthless, but I could no longer get behind him on it, or support him marrying Katniss.
Peeta, on the other hand, made a promise right at the beginning that he wouldn't let the Capital change him and he kept that promise through everything. Even when they messed up his mind so he didn't know what was real and what wasn't, and he ended up killing innocent people because of it, he didn't throw in the towel and surrender to that insanity. He fought his way, step by step, with courage and selflessness, back to the gentleness and kindness he always used to have. He refused to let them turn him into them, which is something that not many characters, in any story, are that committed to.

You guys inspired me to binge all the movies again, and there are two things about this franchise that I feel are underrated: Jennifer Lawrence's acting and the score.
The score perfectly captures EVERY single moment of these movies, whether its the main theme or Katniss singing the Hanging Tree, or even going dead silent during the sewer scene to increase tension. It adds a lot to every scene and is a great example of using music to enhance the story instead of the other way around like so many films do.
Jennifer Lawrence's acting is honestly Oscar level here. Her performance is beyond amazing and makes me cry a TON, from the very beginning when she's volunteering with that pure desperation and fear in her voice, or at the very end when she's screaming at a cat because she doesn't know how else to let her grief out and then hanging onto that cat for dear life because it's her last piece of Prim she can hold.
This trilogy is nothing short of cinematic gold (yes even the last 2 movies) and the franchise as a whole gets a 10/10 from me.

I think that katniss knew that coin was the enemy when the games with capitol children was proposed. I think that the "for prim" gives this away; she knows that coin was responsible for those deaths.
from mockingjay, chapter 29: “Suddenly, I’m thinking of Prim, who was not yet fourteen, not yet old enough to be granted the title of soldier, but somehow working on the front lines. How did such a thing happen? That my sister would have wanted to be there, I have no doubt. That she would be more capable than many older than she is a given. But for all that, someone very high up would have had to approve putting a thirteen-year-old in combat.”
katniss agreeing to the games is to get coin's trust. what would have happened if katniss disagreed and verbally pronounces her disapproval? while haymitch doesn't know why katniss agrees, he trusts her judgement and tells her that he's on her side by saying "I'm with the mockingjay."

Siriously, though guys, I'm a little bot disappointed with the lack of psychological understanding.
When you talk about her desicions and motives and patience- remember she is 17 years old, were more or less a slave to the capitol her entire life, and came out barley alive with severe ptsd as a result.
She is now, at age 17, forced into a position that she never wanted, in a war she wanted nothing to do with, and has to watch Snow do his best to harm everyone she ever cared about, just to punish her..
You simply cannot expect her to be rational or balmeing her for not always making smart desicions, just because ju think its reckless.
If you do it just proves that you missed the entire point of the story.

What i really like about this books and movies is that they depict war very clever and i dare to say, accurate. Like, of course “all is fair in love and war” and you have to make impossible decisions. But still there is always that invisible and thin line what differ you from your opponents. If you win and if your victory is covered in blood of too many innocent people, then what really has changed? What is the difference between you and the ones you have been fighting against? Suzanne Collins did an unbelievably good job creating this story. I always love to come back and rewatch/reread it

The only problem with the movies is that Katniss doesn't get a happy ending in the book. She and Peeta both have severe PTSD, so when Katniss found out she was pregnant she panicked but Peeta convinced her that it was good. They were both horribly scarred and what I actually always loved about the book is that the ending was human and real.

It would be a little hard to convey via film, but the one thing from this book I remember more than the rest is at the very end in the epilogue as Katniss is explaining about the nightmares to the baby is her internal dialogue about remembering that Prim and many others ended up buried in the field her daughter played in (the daughter is the older one in the book, and the son was the baby), but that they didn't need to realize that the field was a mass grave. I just think it's a really beautiful parallel, for lack of better terminology, having this beautiful field that is also simultaneously a mass grave.

Suzanne didn't actually want to make the love triangle this prominent. Gale and Peeta represent two sides in a war. All her work explores the facets of war and Gale and Peeta are two of them, and who Katniss chooses tells us what she is. Also you see, we read/watch through Katniss's pov so we're essentially her and who you pick tells about your mentality and how you might act in such a situation. These themes of humans, war, violence etc are explored much more deeply in the new prequel book. Definitely give it a read

  • @gurgashmire

I’ve always taken it as Katniss having a plan to kill Coin. She’s too real to say “for Prim” and not be talking about Coin, who got her killed. The whole series is about her being forced into other people’s plans, and for once, here, she gets to make her own plan, and Haymitch sees it in her eyes, and trusts her. He knows she would never allow another Capitol.
There is no way that Coin would create an execution for Snow and not try to be the face of it. Coin would have to be front and center, and she was too arrogant that she was seen as innocent by Katniss. She underestimated the discernment in Katniss as opposed to blind rage.

I loved the end, with Katniss and Peeta together. It's right and she does need him. Like Lucille Bluth says: "good for her"
It'll never stop my heart from breaking in the last Gale and Katniss scenes tho.
I haven't read the books in so many years, almost nine? But seeing it again here? Literal tears. I know a lot of people don't like him, but he's one of my favorite characters and the way he knows he was part of Prim's death, even if not in a planned or consensual way... the amount of guilt he feels... The actor made a great job in the delivery, because his voice just breaks and you feel the pain.
I've always been good with the finale, but gosh, Gale, baby. I love you hahaha

And she lives on.

  • @nicolettemaloy

Sorry long comment incoming. But I wanted to share this very respected fan theory(since it’s never directly said and only hinted at), Prim is like 13 or 14 and in district 13 that isn’t old enough to be a medic in the field but yet we see Prim in the capital helping (you might be wondering how??) well Coin is the only person who could sign off on an order to put prim in the capital before she’s old enough. But why would Coin do that? Coin knew about the bombs that would be dropped and she knew they’d take out the first responders (Prim is a first responder). So Prim dies but why did Coin want that? Coin wanted that firstly to make Katniss agree to the symbolic hunger games bc she would want revenge. However Coin didn’t know about katniss’s conversation with Snow where he hints that it was Coin who called for the order to drop the bombs. So when katniss agrees to the symbolic hunger games it’s only so coin still thinks katniss is on her side (which she’s not since she later kills coin) and haymitch agrees as well bc he realizes katniss had a plan. And secondly Katniss is competition in Coins eyes if killing Prim would break Katniss’s spirit she might not challenge Coin because her mental state is so fragile therefore coin is “getting rid” of someone who might challenge her and keep her in line so she doesn’t become another president snow

This was an amazing ride with you! I really enjoy your commentary and speculations, thank you. Ninetailedbrush looked just so "dead inside" after Prim died😂 but I can't blame him, the ending bit is an emotional rollercoaster. And no other dystopian book could ever compare to this one. It's very mature story, very real and the romance is really not at the forefront. The ending is just perfect - after all this horrible time, Katniss and Peeta really were able to find some happiness, even after they were broken by the Capitol and will never be alright again. It doesn't even matter bc they understand each other. Peeta is her dandelion and all that. You are leaving this movie/book with hope.
