The CONTROVERSY at Super Bowl XXVI

- Prior to Super Bowl XXVI between the Buffalo Bills and the Washington Redskins, Bills defensive line coach Chuck Dickerson thought, for some reason, that it would be a good idea to trash talk Washington's entire offensive line before the game, giving the best offensive line in NFL history plenty of bulletin board material. Safe to say, it backfired miserably, both during and after the game.

This was the year that Ernest Byner atoned for his 1987 AFC Championship game fumble by delivering some huge results as a rusher and receiver for the Redskins. Another plug and play RB that Gibbs loved to have.
1987 not 88. But still, point taken.
Marv Levy later admitted, on either a Missing Rings or 30 for 30 that he fired Dickerson for those comments. Essentially he said that during the week he had no idea who was making what comment- a sort of "tunnel vision" on the game itself that week- but afterwards he read the comments and "just couldn't retain him on my staff".
Even had Dickerson not made those comments, I don't think there's any way the Bills would have won that game. Washington that year and that day was just too good. Even if that's the case, don't give your opponent an advantage by opening your mouth and saying whatever might come to mind.
It was the 30 for 30.
I think Tokyo Rose (aka Chuck Dickerson) was going to get fired regardless. Ted Cottrell was waiting in the wings. Outside of Bruce Smith, the Bills defensive line was suspect at best. In fact, it was that way since they let Fred Smerlas go after 1989 (and they lost Art Still to retirement). Jeff Wright had his moments as Smerlas' replacement. But he was prone to getting overpowered in the middle. Leon Seals regressed and was gone after '91. Phil Hansen showed signs of promise, though.
It was also on another documentary too as well! I imagine it would be hard as hell to retain a coach for making comments like that
This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a video about how the Dolphins Offensive Line went 759 pass attempts without allowing a sack.
Yes and after about week 10 or 11 the commentators constantly brought the ‘88 dolphins up.
Amazing stat not allowing sacks like that, but Dan Marino had a below .500 record between 1988 and 89. Another QB not sacked much was Joey Harrington who was only sacked 17 times his first 2 seasons. So sometimes stats don’t make since.
@@TheTimcollins043 It’s not Dan Marino’s fault that the defense sucked.
@@clydemiller4776 and also never a great run game, granted you have Marino, the Mark's brother you take advantage of it but never had a great running back that could close out games
Was that coach high all Super Bowl week? Did he have multiple concussions and not tell anyone? I thought the mayor of Cincinnati saying Joe Burrow needs a paternity test to prove he's Patrick Mahomes father is some of the most cringe worthy trash talk I've ever heard.
I always forget about Mark Schlereth being a Hog before helping Elway get 2 rings!!
'you can't let joey know about this'. leo getz things done..
As a Broncos fan I'm obviously happy he played in Denver
Mark Schlereth's father was my auto insurance broker in Anchorage, AK, in the late eighties when I had my first car and insurance for a single man below the age of 25 was out of this world.
On Buffalo sports talk radio, Dickerson used to drag Marv Levy all the time and refer to him as "Caspar Milquetoast".
Chuck Dickerson was an A$$
Washington allowed 2 sacks with their backups in the last regular season game of the year, so they basically allowed 7 sacks in 19 games, including the postseason.
A game against the Reggie White-led Eagles, no less.
I think the 1994 Miami Dolphins only allowed 6 sacks that entire season.
In addition to the Hog starters you mentioned, Washington had future Hall of Famer Russ Grimm coming off the bench along with Ed Simmons, who would end up starting more than 100 game on the offensive line for the franchise. So they weren't just great, they were also deep.
The standard the voters have openly spoken about is: "If you can't tell the history of the league without mentioning the player, then they deserve to be in." I'm not sure how you discuss the NFL in the '80s without talking about the Hogs. Out of that group, Grimm was both the most decorated and the leader. If it's any consolation to you, I think they're done with inducting any players from the Gibbs era teams.
@@cardboardbeltGary Clark certainly deserves some consideration. A truly great WR.
Going into the video, never having heard of this story before, my first guess was that Dickerson had insulted how the Hogs played. But nope. The route he did end up taking was pretty egregious.
Also, I finally got my 39.6 shirt last night in the mail!
Before Super Bowl XXVI, Dickerson mocked the Washington Redskins' famed offensive line in a television interview. Dickerson said Redskins tackle Joe Jacoby was "a Neanderthal -- he slobbers a lot, he probably kicks dogs in his neighborhood." He also said tackle Jim Lachey "has bad breath. Players will fall down without him even touching them."
Redskins coach Joe Gibbs got his hands on some tapes of Dickerson and played them at a team meeting on the night before the game, and by all accounts it was a factor in the Redskins' 37-24 thumping of the Bills.
Washington would have destroyed Buffalo no matter what. That 91 team was a force of nature.
I would hardly call a 13 point game a thumping.
I just want to thank you for typing Redskins. This "Washington" business and pretending they were always called the Commanders their entire existence is absurd and only calls attention to why the name was changed to begin with.
@@Rockhound6165 it was a 27 point game .. Buffalo got 14 cosmetic points
@@DolFan316 HTTR!!! Fuck Snyder and his "commies"
Thurman Thomas kept his helmet close by after this game.
He lost before the game, or something like that. Watch closely to Thurman Thomas' helmet and it's a different shade than the rest of his team's.
And they went up against LT and Reggie White twice a season.
And early on in hog history they faced Harvey Martin, Too Tall Jones, and Randy White twice a season.
They talked about this on the 30 for 30 four falls of buffalo
This is one of the first stories you’ve had that I knew before. I remember them talking about this in the Four Falls of Buffalo 30 for 30
I remember this, and the game of domination by my Washington Redskins was glorious. I was 21 and I’m still waiting for another one…….
It might take a team culture change and better execution for that to happen.
Well never gonna happen again because they aren’t the redskins anymore
Excellent video. I only know this because of the ESPN 30’tor 30 documentary. But you did the job so much better because you went back to the college days and other playoffs
8 year old me loved that Washington team. They truly were one of the greatest super bowl winning teams of all time. Mark Rypien deserved league MVP.
@@matthewdaley746 I'm not big on NASCAR but I agree. Although Jimmy Johnson being around didn't help.
They also had Brain Mitchell and he is possibly the goat of special team burn returner
Rypien had a very good year, was second in passer rating to Warren Moon, threw 29 touchdowns on a running team (including I believe 12 of over 30 yards), and was a second team all pro.
I wouldn’t personally vote for him that year because he had an exceptional supporting cast, and you could probably find someone who performed similarly with less talent, but he certainly had a very good year.
Cal Rypken Jr
@@fortynights1513 Plus it's rare for a player who wasn't first team All Pro the same year to win the MVP.
Just seeing this now. I'm a lifelong Washington fan, and this season was the first season that I truly followed the team. Even though I wasn't even 10 yet, I can still remember watching almost every game that year (the only exception was the last game of the season when everyone knew they were playing backups for 3 quarters). I agree with the sentiment they are one of the greatest Super Bowl teams of all times.
The offensive line was the second best line I've ever seen play (the greatest, I will begrudgingly admit, is the Great Wall of Dallas of the mid 90's), and as impressive as the stats were, they don't factor 2 key details: [1] they played a Philadelphia twice, and that year the Eagles fielded the greatest D-Line of all time (IMO). [2] the extremely limited amount of times hurries allowed was more impressive than the low amount of sacks allowed. Plus, it's not Washington had Dan Marino back there that could zip the ball out in the face of a pass rush, Mark Rypien had a long windup which makes the statistics even more impressive.
To quote you, I'm sorry WHAT!!!!!!!
I'm a Giants fan and have much respect for the Hogs, one of the greet O-Lines in NFL history. I have been watching football since 1979 as a six year old.
I remember watching the 30 for 30 documentary four falls of Buffalo…..good documentary but when Chuck Dickerson trash talked the Redskins o-line, that was a big no no…..Washington’s o-line during their Super Bowl Years was phenomenal and did their job during the playoffs…..Chuck Dickerson was never heard from again after being fired by the bills following Super Bowl twenty six….
Dickerson's trash talk was funny. Stupid, but funny. What makes Joe Gibbs' first tenure with Washington remarkable is that he did it with almost no stability at the Quarterback position since Thiesmann's career-ending injury and I think it's also the reason he didn't win more Lombardi trophies, but he did have them Hogs. The Hogs and that completely underrated receiver corps (Art Monk should be a Hall of Famer) could make ME look like an All-Pro.
Art Monk was thankfully inducted back in 2008. I was lucky enough to go see the ceremony where Darrell Green also had his bust unveiled.
He also got fired as a talk show host several years after this, on the local radio station for the same personality. Just like Buffalo News Commentator Jerry Sullivan saying stupid things during his time as a commentator in the 90s. Sometimes these old bags never learn their lesson. I'm sort of glad in the 30 for 30 four Falls of Buffalo, they actually highlight on this incident as the reason why the BILLS had lost to the Redskins along with the other problems that day such as some idiot on Harry Connick Junior's singing staff moving Thurman's helmet and some of the blown calls by the refs during the game. One call of course the Brett Edwards muscling Andre Reed to the ground and Andre being so mad he throws his helmet. I guess the ref saw that and not the Edwards interference.
The Bills needed a perfect game to beat Washington. They didn't get it.
WGR fired Chuck because they wanted the radio rights to the Sabres after Adelphia went bankrupt.
I remember Dickerson on the radio, he wasn’t well liked but as long as he talked about the Bills then Buffalo listened
That was the greatest season ever had by an offensive line. No one in my conscious memory is even close to the '91 Redskins.
Anyone who knows anything about football knows that was an all-time great team, Rypien or not. The Hogs made him look great.
The knock that some would point out against them is that the 49ers were in transition and the Cowboys were a year away (as well as Bill Parcells was retired).
But at that point you’d be knocking them for things that were out of their control. If the 72 Dolphins are one of the greatest teams ever, so are the 91 Skins in my opinion.
Honestly if losing a Superbowl is the lowest point in your career, I'm still pretty envious lol
Considering that the Bills never won even once...
I really appreciate the improved audio on this... a lot less (aka: none) room reverb.
The dominance of the NFC East in the early 1990's has been unmatched before or since in any professional sports league.
The biggest capture of that:
The 91 Cardinals’ schedule had an opposing win percentage of just over .600. The highest of any team in the 16 game era.
They had to play Washington, Dallas, Philly, and New York twice, and the worst of those four was still 8-8; in addition to games vs Denver who made the AFC Championship Game, Atlanta, and I believe San Francisco and New Orleans as well.
I listened to his radio show in the late 90's after this. He was indeed never bashful about taking a shot at Marve. But I must say his brashness did make him a pretty entertaining radio personality.
By the time I was in Buffalo for college at the end of the decade, he really came across as a very bitter man whenever I listened to him. (Which wasn't often.)
Of course, he was presumably a local media pariah at that point.
@@JBarg25 Yea he definitely got a bit meaner as time went on. I think he even went to war against Lindy Ruff, critiquing his tenure as Sabres coach, too. Eventually he burned away a lot of his support I think.
@@DiversityDragons Yeah, that sounds about right.
What did Dickerson have against Eugene Marve?
So weird not hearing that reverb effect.
I saw this on 30 For 30 but this is far more in-depth. Thank you.
Many will argue that in 1991, Washington was one of the greatest teams in NFL history. And is to this day one of the most underrated teams in history"
That makes no sense lol
That's because people who know about them know that they were one of the greatest teams ever. While most people don't realize how good the 91 skins were
Their case for being up there is more statistical, and because they were a stand alone team that didn’t have many big names, what they did tends to get overshadowed by the dynasties of history.
I don’t necessarily think saying that “many” say that is completely accurate, but Washington in 91 had an amazing year, and probably the best season that doesn’t necessarily get attention from the mainstream of the sports media.
@@fortynights1513This is a very properly rated point.
This brings to mind an old adage, "Talk shit, get hit 🤷♂️"
Jacoby needs to be in the Hall already.
Totally Agree!
Concur
What’s crazy about the skins Oline dominance is they were playing some of the best pass rushers of all time
When you deal with guys like LT and White in the same division every year, the rest would feel easy in comparison.
LT was older, but White was in his prime.
They played 15 of the 32 guys in the league who had eight sacks that season or more ultimately.
@@fortynights1513 The Hogs have been a thing throughout the 1980s, dealing with them in the latter half of the decade year in and year out can take a lot out of anyone.
@@iamhungey12345 Certainly true
As great as the Hogs were, the 1975 Cardinals offensive line allowed 7 sacks all season. This was a heck of a feat considering Jim Hart wasn't exactly fleet of foot.
'70 49ers gave up just 8 sacks as well. '71 Raiders had five Hall Of fame O-linemen, although Ron Mix and Bob Brown both played OT and split starts there.
Mid 70’s Cardinals (really 74-77) had a great line.
Dan Dierdorf, Conrad Dobler, Tom Banks, Bob Young and Roger Finnie correct me if I’m wrong (that was well before my time).
Another team that deserves mention is the 1988 and 89 Miami Dolphins.
They had a streak of 19 games without allowing a sack, including the final 12 games of 1988.
@@DolFan316 who was SF's QB then, Brodie? If so, that's impressive as he had cement feet as well.
@@Rockhound6165 That would’ve been John Brodie in his MVP season (and in my opinion a very overlooked one at that).
His line notably didn’t allow many sacks, but San Fran’s running game averaged only 3.4 yards per carry (21st out of 26 that year).
Maybe they weren’t as good at run blocking? Or maybe that said more about the backs themselves? Either way I find it interesting.
One of these days, I hope you’ll do a video about Rod Marinelli and the 0-16 2008 Detroit Lions.
“I took it personally.” - Michael Jordan 😆
I remember that from that 30 for 30 that ESPN aired a few years ago. I don't know what the hell Dickerson was thinking about. He shouldn't be mad at Marv Levy because he brought this on himself.
Marv was old school and I guess I can't blame him for the firing but either way Buffalo loses whether or not he made the comments
@@rocknroll7316 I think the Bills would've had a better shot if Dickerson didn't shoot off his mouth. Washington, using the extra motivation he gave them, ran them out of the Metrodome despite the 2-possession margin at the end.
What is it about The Super Bowl giving Head Coaches and players "Foot-In-Mouth Disease", wherein they say things that are just Ass-Stupid?
Congratulations on getting 50k subs .
All i remember is raiders beating up the hogs in s b xviii. Crazy man Alzado kicked jacoby's ass.
Correction on your math: it rounds up to 1.8% sack percentage. Still highly impressive, especially considering that Rypien wasn't exactly Lamar Jackson or Michael Vick back there. Incredible offensive line!
The 74-76 Cardinals offensive line was better.
@@Rockhound6165 I was born in 76 so I didn't have a chance at seeing them live, but from what I've heard they had an amazing OL back then.
"Rypien wasn't exactly Lamar Jackson or Michael Vick back there."
Indeed. That statement doesn't mean what you think it means, though. Rypien was the type to get the ball out, as opposed to the type known for RUNNING HIMSELF INTO SACKS.
@@JonPITBZN He definitely was more adept at getting ball out quickly than Vick or Jackson, but he wasn't Marino though either. It did require exemplary line play to keep it that ridiculously low.

91 Skins are the Best team I’ve ever seen .. they don’t get that kind of recognition because the star of the team was the O-line not the Quarterback ..
Oh, I remember this! It was mentioned in the documentary movie Four Falls of Buffalo. Yeah, he really opened his mouth. 🤦♂️
Dickerson went on to be a sports radio show host in Buffalo and tried to flip the script on several occasions. He claimed The “bad breathe” and “tutu under his uniform” comments were compliments and taken out of context by the media and Joe Gibbs. He meant the one guy was so strong that anytime he put his hands on someone they ended up on the ground so quick that you would have thought he had terrible breathe…and the “tutu” comment was meant as a compliment to the other guys footwork. It was widely known that Jim Kelly’s dad had him do ballet to improve his footwork. He’s obviously full of crap and was ran out of Buffalo radio by just about everyone at WGR55 in pretty short order. Some Bills defensive linemen gave a little better context in later interviews. Apparently Bruce and another guy or two told Dickerson to stop heaping praise on the other teams coaches and linemen before games. It was psyching some of the guys out (especially when he spent all week talking about how terrible the other teams line was in practice) and in most cases it was just Dickerson blowing smoke in a different direction. Apparently he has to be at one extreme or another with no middle ground lol
This is a story i have heard before. All you have to do is watch 30/30 about the Buffalo Bills and they bring up Dickerson.

@@OfficialJaguarGator9 just explaining that it has been told before. NFL season is over by the way. (Not just mentioning to you) But sports have an off-season, waiting for baseball).
That Redskin deep roster was built with very few first day draft picks.
The Hogs have to be the GOAT of offensive lines. The 80s Skins were an underrated dynasty because of the Niners. The Niners had Joe Montana in all of their Super Bowls at the time. But the Skins won 3 and went to another Super Bowl that they lost to the Raiders between 1982-1991. The one constant for them wasn't a franchise QB but the best Oline ever. They won SBs with Joe Theismann, Doug Williams, and Mark Rypien. No other franchise has done that.
So you watched the 30 for 30 on the Bills, and saw Dickerson make a fool of himself
A nice one. I never heard about Dickerson or the comments. Players have been called worse than that (imagine if that was Buddy Ryan) and Dickerson wasn't the offensive coordinator for Buffalo either. So did Buffalo fire a coach a year for losing all of those Super Bowls?
I've said for years...this was the Bills worst Super Bowl by far. XXVII and XXVIII may have looked worse by the scores...but the Bills hung with the Cowboys for a time. This Super Bowl was literally done in the pregame show
I remember when they parodied this in Charlie Brown
You need the microphone Jon Bois uses
He would've been famous for making 4 super bowls if he wasn't fired. Not just 2.
As a Bills fan, we don't talk about Chuck Dickerson. Ruined a great career this week.
Raleigh Mackenzie being the weak link… if you watch enough games you might believe he was the best lineman, he had HOF Grimm on the bench. He was the most athletic of the lineman. Played fullback in his rookie season in an NFC championship game in an attempt to neutralize Lawrence Taylor. In another game he was moved to left tackle in order to neutralize Pat Swillings speed and athleticism. Not to knock the other 4 guys, just saying Mackenzie might not have been the weak link.
Hey, I found this vid pretty early. Go Rams!
The Redskins DOMINATED that year and if it wasn’t for those damn Cowboys would have been undefeated. They were easily one of the best teams in NFL history. HTTR4LIFE
Gibbs would have rested the starters in the last game anyway. Still the greatest all-around team in NFL history. HTTR!!!
@@davidozab2753 If not for Gibbs resting starters, they could’ve allowed the fewest sacks of any team since 1969 (when that became official).
In their matchup earlier in the season, Washington allowed two sacks to Philly, and held Reggie White, Clyde Simmons, and Jerome Brown to none each.
They only allowed 6 sacks going onto the last game of year against eagles
They also had a streak of eight straight sackless games. The second longest on record only to Miami in 1988 and 89.
That year was Detroits only shot
This Superbowl might be known for this, but I don't think it's unfair to point out that, to many people, its claim to fame will always be the Simpsons episode that featured it so prominently. In that episode, Lisa and Homer start having daddy-daughter days built around Lisa's uncanny ability to pick winning football teams. Lisa credulously assumes that Homer values her company and, during the off-week between the championships and the Superbowl, she's devastated by Homer's news that he's ditching her to go to Moes.
Obviously Homer wants her to pick the Superbowl winner and Lisa -- in one of the least skilled prognostications ever -- says "I think the Redskins are a mortal lock." Homer is just about to run out of the house to put money on the Skins, when Lisa adds that she might be unconsciously tanking Homer's bet. The rest of the episode revolves around whether she will be "revealed" to still love her dad, or to now hate him, based entirely on the outcome of the game.
91 skins were one of, if not the best team of all time.
Is it a case of him knowing that he was outmanned, and tried some sort of reverse psychology?. just taking a stab at it... did he actually think that his comments would work? I don't know.,
I see Rochester, NY media well represented in this video. Quotes that appeared in the Democrat and Chronicle as well as video clips from WROC-TV 8 (the CBS affiliate that used to be an NBC affiliate).
