  • Disclaimer: This was NOT filmed during a real class, we shot this for fun to show some of what you might learn in a real class. Read more about getting a PADI Advanced Mermaid certification here:
To get the PADI Advanced Mermaid certification, you have to get "Basic Mermaid" and "Mermaid" first. I did all three of these in one giant two-day session. Like I said in the disclaimer, there were a lot of things we couldn't film, so think of this video as a sneak peek into the program. This video was made off of my personal experience and is not intended to replace formal instruction.
Don't let the name fool you, this is a physically demanding diving certification that requires a certain amount of strength and stamina to complete. Do not attempt anything you see in this video without training from a professional, and stay supervised at all times. Never swim alone, sick, or injured. Do not dive in unsafe conditions.
If you're interested in PADI mermaid courses, start here: www.padi.com/c...
Depending on your instructor, you will be required to purchase or rent diving gear such as professional grade monofins (Linden, Mahina, Finis - no random Amazon monofins, those aren't safe), a professional mermaid tail (again - no Amazon tails), bifins, a diving mask with a snorkel, dive weights, and a dive belt. Do not cheap out on these items. You will get what you pay for and compromise your safety.
Regarding the safety portion of day two, you will learn how to actually rescue someone who's having difficulty underwater. We weren't able to film this for logistical reasons, and it's better to see this part of the course in person anyway.

Hi! PADI Mermaid Instructor from the video here! Just wanted to correct one thing that I misspoke during the video! When you're doing your exhale descent, you only want to breathe out about 75% of your breath, not your entire breath. As always, dive with a buddy and have fun :)

I was about to say this too! I'm doing my PADI Mermaid practical tomorrow (since I'm writing this at almost 3am it's now tomorrow), and the theory work that I've already done said no more than half your breath

OOOO I have to give a shout out to the Mermaid Linden monofin as the absolute best one I've tried. Less expensive than most, agile, fast, adjustable, and easy on and off. Also fits in the inexpensive FinFun skins.
I began mermaiding after being an advanced open water PADI diver for years. I recommend being a mer to anyone in love with Planet Water. Anyone, any size, shape, color, gender, and most abilities.
Stay safe, know your water, know your own limits.
