***FYI*** Slave tags can be used to track ancestry. This is very important because most slave ancestry was erased due to lack of record keeping. The slave’s family lineage wasn’t a priority to slave owners , most slaves couldn’t read or write, and families were separated. This led to valuable information being lost. However, the number on the tag coincides with a name (usually first name only) in archived plantation records. The Charleston historical society and possibly museums have these historical records locked away for safe keeping. There is a possibility that someone could literally trace their lineage back to Africa, if the connection was made in the historical archives, via a slave tag. Imagine someone regaining their lost history because of your find. That would be awesome.
A definite substantial piece of history...I just purchased 2 slave tags and 1 free slave tag and I want to treat them with much respect to honor the slaves that had to wear them...I am going to have my husband make me a special frame and I’ll put the freed slave tag in between the two slave tags...incredible find.

I had to rewatch the part where you found the slave tag...the emotions you felt were so raw...I can tell you are an amazing person. I understand how that could be so emotional...just think of the history that piece holds and how wonderful it felt for the slave to pull that off. It all reality it wasn’t really that long ago the inhumane acts happened...not even 200 years ago...just a few generations. Very sad and humbling feeling. Cherish it and respect it and maybe even say a little prayer over it once in awhile...that’s what I will be doing with mine.
I appreciate you watching. This is not a burial ground , but rather an old homesite. These are relics they left behind. I feel as though I am honoring them by sharing with the world.

Thanks for watching! However all the records to these tags were burned up in the big fire of Charleston. Or else I would try to locate living family.
What a unique historical find! I appreciate how emotional you get - that's a really unique piece of the past you are holding!
Pretty insane piece of history you’re holding. Congrats and get some mo!

I just want to say thank you for what you are doing, I am a black man and I did not know that about the ancestor.
@earnestpatterson9045 your very welcome. I plan on donating some of them to the museum too, if they want them.

Thanks! I was gonna edit it out, but I thought. NO, thats stupid. I want to be real.
Congratulations!!! What a great find!
How many men died so that slave could take his tag and fold it up and Chuck it into oblivion....cool find. God bless his/her soul.
None, no one died when they got these tags. They were issued Tags to do work for different people and plantations.
1844 was 21 years before slavery ended. most likely he ran away on his own.
Awesome find! Congrats!
Awesome hunt. Congrats on the tag and the eagle button.
Thank you!
Good stuff we need to hunt together sometime! I’m up in Hickory . Find loads of goodies here as well and England and Canada
Congratulations! I dream of finding one when we visit our friends in the Carolinas. Not something we find in Michigan
