Read Fredrick Douglas' "A Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave" published in 1845 after he escaped from slavery. His story gives an interesting, and rather raw, historical narrative context to these pieces.
Will do...thanks for the suggestion. I read recently where he and Susan B. Anthony had a rocky relationship based on their individual and mutual initiatives. That might be something else to explore.
