1 4 5 4: is referring to the degree or number of a scale. For example, in C major scale we have the following notes: CDEFGAB. C=1, D=2, E=3, F=4, G=5, A=6, B=7. Therefore, 1 4 5 4 = to C F G F (Loop). The correct way to write it is I IV V IV, all major chords. I ii iii IV V vi vii. Uppercase= major and Lowercase= minor. Hope this helps!
Thanks for explaining
Thanks Adamson, I remember this was one of one the first guitar lessons on UA-cam please come back and continue with this wonderful project of spreading African music
About "African music" becoming mainstream worldwide, one must remember that "African music" is almost infinitely diverse, especially in certain forest zones (and vast savana plains) where multiple groups of people were isolated for up to a few millennia (the Congos, Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Angola, etc.) Even today, ethnic groups so small as to having just 5,000 people or less, often have 6 to a dozen totally different and incredibly rich musical genres, each having totally different dance moves. Most of what even Africans in cities ever heard of is a tiny fraction of what exists. Several of them (and the local languages in which the singing is done) are slowly disappearing due to less than optimal urbanization and lack of adaptation for improved portability and transferrability to better meet modern show business requirements. However, this process is not fast enough to threaten the infinite diversity of African musical genres.
Very informative video. Greetings from Barranquilla, Colombia, where Soukous music plays a major part on our music and our parties
watching his video in 2022, it's great to see Congolese cultural heritage still being reserved and appreciated
Africa leads the way in the essence contemporary music .Soon it will be absorbed into the mainstream and the source will not mention until no one knows the source is Africa
All the best
Except that "African music" is almost infinitely diverse, especially in certain forest zones (and vast savana plains) where multiple groups of people were isolated for up to a few millennia.
Wow! I can see the experience! How interesting! You guys in congo have a very rich culyure!

I just start learn Sukous and this is so helpful.
I love sukous music.
To contribute to the sokous discussion and respond to Darkhandsome, question about scales and sokous. You can use any major scale and even minor scales. You can include seventh codes and notes in your variations too. Diblo Dibala ocasionally uses minors in his soukous guitar to express emotion in music. However any major scale can do. The scale one choosed to use also will depend on whether the singers can sing from it. Welldone Adamson and Kawele. Thanks for uploading this clip.
This Kawele guy is a genius. Guitar playing is just natural with him. Does he have any album to his credit?
Muy bueno bendiciones maestros
I really love this guyz... Adamson, you are just great... and Kawele...
Hi Chief thank you for your comment. I would like to let you know soukous music is not new, it has been around for a long time only that it has not been publicized properly

Africa is the mother of ALL cultures; but it is like a classical Abstract painting: so hard to 'collect'/comprehend. European and eastAsian cultures benefitted immensely from a mechanistic approach to archiving through 'solfa-notation' and in this way you can learn nearly everything by listening to the written works of (e.g) Bach, Mozart, Beethoven....It seems as if...'recording'/archiving is anathema to Africa; in all aspects even herbal medicine. And that's why it remains the 'hub' of research and tapping of new discoveries by intrepid westerners visiting. Meanwhile Africans in their abstract ways just imbibe without extremely 'commercializing'/patenting/appropriating. e.g isn't it amazing that african-american slaves who couldn't read and write were able to take with them some of these unbelievable sounds; just stored in their minds. African culture is 'freedom' based; it hates the structure of strictness and therefore shall remain the cradle of the undiscovered/archived/un-annotated. Of course some will argue that written works and a writing system from ancient Egypt was appropriated...( to ascribe such powers to colonialists is to almost give them godly status, I refuse) but me thinks just like in the tower of Babel....God loves abstract art, when man tries to over-organize...He disorganizes and then we agonize...and seek Him....Amen!
All these is good information merci mingi
God bless the Congolese with sweet music.
Tell me about it. they produce such beutiful music, I swear it's in their blood.
soooooo good ! many, many thanks. i want to learn this style ! mike
Magnifique!
Kawele should get a Squier endorsement. And he should have any Fender Stratocaster he wants.
He was playing the C major scale. CDEFGABC
Hallo Adamson, this is great stuff and hope to learn how to play..How can I get the virtual band stuff?
A common mistakes musicians do, is to jump straight in playing without listening or thinking about they are about to play. Playing an instrument is a gradual process. It has taken me years of listening and practicing to be able to play a guitar. One final Advise be a musician first not a riffs player Listen to other players or congolese music as much as you can
I guess what they are saying is that the scale to be used is the major scale?
Is there a possibility to teach us soukous guitar ? Please 🙏
hello vvhere can i listen to kavvele's music on the internet ? thanks
Could somebody please explain how it does the strumming at minute 3:55? the chords is 1-4-5-4, but how does he do that, does he strum all strings for each chord, only one, two, three...?? I am lost with this one :-) Thanks in advance!!!
Moustapha Diop no he plays the root notes of each chord. Shift keys with an open upwards strum the back to playing the root notes of each chord in the drumlike tempo
