Rolling Parts Storage Case Cabinet

  • I have been buying these parts storage boxes from Harbor Freight Tools for the past 3 years or so. I had not thought of building a cabinet for them until I saw a video of Adam Savage from Myth Busters showing his cabinet from a company called Sortimo. Although these are not Sortimo cases, I thought people would like to see my inexpensive version of those cases.

It is kind of a funny story... I've been watching videos of people building stuff for their workshops, because I myself want to built stuff for MY workshop.
And it just came to my mind that there might be a lot of guys that have a workshop just (or at least mostly) to be able to build even more stuff for their workshop! ;-)

That is cool. I initially bought that size harbor freight container, and it works great for screws and bolts, but has too much of a gap between the lid and the internal bins to hold small washers if you ever hold the container vertical. So I bought one of the sortimo containers filled with the small red boxes, and one with the slightly bigger yellow boxes. Those I plan to put the small washers etc in. You are right, the sortimo boxes were around $51 each filled with the containers, but for just buying two I figured were worth it for the small pieces that the harbor freight ones do not contain properly. I may try making something like yours for all my parts bins...once I get them filled up. However so far I have far fewer, so I will likely make it smaller. In any case, very cool setup you have there. :)

looks like a good idea to store those storage boxes , a lot better than just stacking the boxes then its a pain to get to the bottom one thanks for sharing your build ideas
    have a great day

That's a great idea. I've been seriously considering building one or more cabinets full of drawers with dividers to house all of my various parts and such. I think it would cost more to go the way you did, but honestly, I really like the way yours looks and the self-contained portability of those containers is a huge plus. I may have to rethink my plan.
Thanks for posting this. Nicely done!

I don't even have that need for the many containers, but it's impressive and I want it!

Your cabinet looks terrific. How can I make mine that's only a single cabinet, how would I change the dimensions of the cabinet? I also only have basic tools. Thanks, I hope you can just gime some advise.

I have been trying to find one of these designs that I like, but for the weight problem I would bolt on some handles to the sides

It would be great to see the video about your rolling tool cabinet.
You said you doubled up the bottom with two layers of the plywood and then routed the sides so that the side boards would fit there. Couldn't you just cut that second piece of plywood small enough so that you did not have to do the router step, then sandwich the two pieces together and fit the sides on?

+Henry Yes, I thought of that, but I wanted the sides all the way around to match perfectly so I put it on the tables saw and cut that piece off. I also needed to cut the channel down the center anyways so did all three at the same time.

Looking at your plans and comparing the dimensions given on the Harbor Freight website for the medium and large storage cases - you allowed 3/8" of clearance above the height of the medium cases (2 5/8", with medium cases 2 1/4" tall), yet the clearance for the large cases is only 1/8" (4 5/8" with large cases being 4 1/2" tall). Any particular reason for the smaller clearance? Just curious. I definitely need to build one of these and was wondering about the smaller clearance on the larger cases.

Argh, I finally find what I'm looking to do and when I click the link to the PDF, it comes back with a 404 error. Any chance you can upload the PDF file again?

Do you have any trouble with the lid staying open on your bins? Mine don't open far enough to tilt back and so they tend to fall forward when I am trying to get at the contents.

Yes, I've noticed that problem also. But it's a small annoyance compared to the cost of buying the expensive sortimo cases.

How are the Harbor Freight boxes holding up? Any wishes you would have went with the Sortimos?

    • @tomintheshop
      @tomintheshop  7 років тому

No problems yet. They are holding up well. Of course the Sortimos are a MUCH higher quality but way over my budget.

I have a system like this in my work van. I have been using these for years and they hold up well. Of all the organizers available these are the flimsiest but they are good enough.
