  • Three sparring bouts, all filmed on the same day, ranging from bright sunshine, to light rain and finally heavy rain (and soaked ground). Filmed at Fightcamp 2019. Alex Timmerman from Kraken Swords is in blue vs Nick Thomas of AHF in red. We are both using cutlasses made by Alex, who will soon be taking orders for them. They are based on the British 1804 Royal Navy Cutlass, and are accurate representations of those cutlasses in size, weight, guard type and handling characteristics. (28-29" blades and around 2.1lbs total weight).

    So, I had the Terminator 2 OST playing in another tab while I was watching this, and it was amazing how often the music matched up with the sword sparring.

    the guy in red really shows a lot of skill in this video. his movements are rather minimalistic when he is not engaging and he seems to be focusing on studying the enemies reactions to aim for an opening.

      My exact thought! It's so easy to exhaust yourself

    Blue brought a gun to a swordfight, but lost it at 0:36. :)

      Which is historically accurate! From 1630-1730, sidearms such as a flintlock pistol were intended to be disposable once fired, either to be thrown at the enemy or used as a club*1. Often, such as in the case of many naval actions, several pistols (2-6+ in some instances) would be worn in as a brace, so that one could have many shots without reloading*2. Those who could not afford to accidentally lose or purposefully discard their sidearms would tie them up in a silk sling or sash and would keep them "flung over his shoulders according to the fashion of pirates"*3. Benerson Little, "The Sea Rover's Practice", 2007. This same book a short but nice section swordsmanship during the packed decks of a naval action.

    Very nice bouts with nice swords. I really like cutlass and dussack type swords. Do you have the impression that the short range makes lateral movements more rewarding?

      Nobody currently makes any good cutlasses as far as I know. These were both made by Alex of Kraken Swords as in the video. He should have production going again quite soon.

    I see a lot of one handed swords here.Is it a preference?

    • @AcademyofHistoricalFencing
      @AcademyofHistoricalFencing  5 років тому +15

      Well it is a preference yes, but its also worth mentioning that two handed swords were not that common compared to one handed historically. Longsword gets an excessive amount of attention in HEMA today, though that is starting to change. We do practice longsword in the AHF, but I (Nick) have been bored with it for a while now. We do also still play around with montante/zweihander sometimes, but its rather limited in what you can do safely.

      Mine (Nick) is from Armourclass in Scotland, high quality and very good prices. I don't know in Alex's one as he must have sourced it in the US. Quartermaster Stores in the UK are also excellent and I have several from them

    Have you thought about using soccer cleats for outdoors work?

    • @AcademyofHistoricalFencing
      @AcademyofHistoricalFencing  5 років тому +3

      No, one of the best things about training outdoors is it gives people a more realistic understanding of footing and grip as it would have been in many situations historically, as opposed to super grippy trainers on a gym floor.
