Optical Toys From Rufus Butler Seder

Tim recently received a parcel in the post from Rufus Butler Seder, which contained some of Rufus's latest optical toys and inventions.
The first toy Tim demonstrates is a hand held battery operated fan, which has a row of LEDs along one of the fan blades. It is called JURASSIC WORLD FANIMATION, and as the fan blades spin, the LEDs are switched on and off in such a way that we see animated images when we look at the fan. As the name suggests, a variety of dinosaurs appear, walking or flying across the screen.
PETIT CHAT is the latest of Rufus's animated books, this one aimed at the French market. As the name suggests, the book is full of animations showing animated cats in a variety of situations.
Finally, the MAGNIFISCOPE (Patent Pending) is a viewer that uses six Fresnel lenses to show a series of pictures which create an animation. The pictures come on a paper strip that is wound around a central core, and can be quickly changed with a different strip, when you want to see a different animation!

The animation from the first fan was (at least partially) taken from the animated music video “Do the Evolution” by Pearl Jam.
It’s an absolutely incredible animation if you’ve never seen it.

Interesting toys
That fan making the animation is awesome. So far I haven't really seen anything that really used the potential of spinning leds. I suppose it's because that potential shares the same foundations as all other displays. It's about what you put on it. I love the dinosaurs.
The frenel zoetrope wheel is very interesting cuz the lens is a fairly novel solution. But it doesn't have room for many frames.
Rufus Butler Seder surely is a nice guy, but he made it an art to sell old wine in new bottles. No new inventions, only new products. But I applaud him for it. All these optical illusions, including the LED-fan (that I prototyped as a 'Light Saber" in 1996) have been around for a long time (I mean, 19th century!). Sometimes he takes credit for inventing these toys, but that is nothing more than good marketing!

This the first time something Tim's shown turns out to be something I really, really want--the dinosaur fan! To be honest, I have a fair number of the items I've seen on this show...a small fraction, to be sure (I'm poor), but these are the kinds of gadgets I've always bought when I could afford them.
Watching the horse running backwards has reawakened my aneurism and has caused me to become uncomfortably dead. Why tho.

Do u realize that the horse is running BACKWARDS when u spin it in that certain direction? Just wanted 2 let u know....
Maybe it’s the speed? Like when a wheel appears to be slowly rotating backwards when moving forwards a a certain speed.
