  • Thought I would try something completely new today - making a set of grips for my Remington 1911.
I had some old knife scale blanks lying around and thought these would be ideal.
This episode covers selecting the wood and initial shaping of the grips.

THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER ENJOYED WATCHING A BRIT TALKING ABOUT GUN STUFF. EXCELLENT VIDEO AND VERY VERY HELPFUL!

I made my 1911 grips exactly the same way. I never had much to make it with so I sliced some CLS so it was the thickness I needed and stained it 3 times using coffee and then varnished it and my gun looks alot better than it did with the plastic grips.

Looks like oak or mahogany, I thought the middle was cocobolo but I haven’t done knife scales for awhile so it is probably wenge, and the right does look like cedar.

The wood in the middle is definitely Wenge. I've made some knife handles out of it, and it is my favourite decorative wood for this kind of thing

You could also print out the 1911 grip blueprints and glue it on to the wood.

Tbh the left scales look more like walnut then the middle ones though it could be anything from walnut to cocobolo. The middle ones look like zircote to me at least. And idk what the far right one is, very unusual figuring and color while still good looking.

Sweet. I'm trying to do this myself. Using pieces from an old apple tree log. Trying to do some red resin in the cracks and see if it works out.

Awww. I thought it was going to be for a real M1911-A1. Feel bad for you guys, can’t even get a real pistol.
What a shame. I build one from scratch almost every winter in my shop, however I am not an experienced wood worker so I comission my grips. I have an affinity for Buffalo ivory these days, and I have a set from black Buffalo horn. I almost dropped a small chunk on a set from Ram Horn but I lost the bid for them on eBay.

@@10milliBuddha. when you get older, you will be able to acquire some of the finer things in life. In my case, I hand built my carry gun myself, and yes I am a certified gunsmith with a degree as well as 31 years of practice. In my situation, not daily carrying a gun I personally built from scratch would be odd, no? Wouldn’t you want and even expect your gunsmith to carry and daily use his own product? In addition to, since I built it from scratch the cost was minimal. I can’t charge myself for my Gunsmithing so yea, you could even say I git a really good deal. 👋😀.

Those really skinny scales are probably a fur or a pine of some kind and the middle ones look like Manzanita wood and the first ones look like either regular Walnut or a mahogany it's hard to tell with them being dry if you were to let them or coat them in some oil before you started cutting we would be able to tell a little easier
