- In this video I take you from start to finish machining a set of pistol grips for a Colt 1911. Fixturing, fixture screws and machining brass and rosewood. Thank you so much for your time.
Inspiration by: The VS-31 Topcat, S-3B Viking and US Navy Aircrewman.
You can download models of the fixture and BLANK grips from:

This is an awesome project, thanks for sharing.
Nice work! I learned something new today with that Loctite trick you showed. Thanks!
Thanks. It worked better than I thought. I've used 10 times now
You are the Warren Miller of CNC Machining. Outstanding videos. :).. I am now looking into buying a 440.
Thank you very much! I have really enjoyed making gun parts. there is nothing better than showing up to the range with a cool looking gun part that your buddies cant buy. The 440 is a great machine. It's only real limitation is the work envelope. If you have the room and $$ get the 770 or bigger.
@@LastBastionLabs Right on. I will have to save up for a 770. I hand make (old school) custom 1911 and 2011 competition guns. I competitive shoot at the national level. And do the gunsmithing as a hobby. But I would love to be able to have a CNC machine. In Time I guess.lol. Till then I will pick you brain on milling parts, and the Pros and Cons of the 440 vs 770. besides money..LOL
@@rpq1968 I love old school guys! Look me up on Instagram and lets stay in touch. I am happy to help.
Great job! So many Timmy-isms.
Thanks, I think I used them all up.
That is really great work.i love that back strap.that is awesome...
Thank you!
I freaking love these!
Thanks, it was a LOT of work but well worth it.
Thanks!
I think your going to be making a tap follower and a hex die holder for your upcoming video
It is on the list.
I bet you could make stamps for leather work.
I start that. The AC leather stamp would also make a great AC branding iron. I'm having difficulty with the SVG vector graph I have of the AC wings. My CAD software is not happy with it.
Would you be able to machine a set of copper solid grips with a smooth finish so it can darken with handling??
I could, however I have moved and my shop is in kit form while I finish my new shop. I will be hard pressed to finish by the end of this year. Thanks for watching!
Fantastic video! Just subscribed!
I also enjoy making 1911 grips via a CNC. I have a couple of UA-cam videos on the topic. When I get my machine up and running again, I'm going to re-build my CAD files and toolpaths in Fusion 360. Maybe we should Skype sometime and compare notes? I'm really impressed with your setup and the logic you used to create your grips. Well done!
Thank you! Happy to share what I know. Let me know when you want to skype.
great job and the correct machine
What kind of glue did you use to hold the gold pieces in place?
I used System three Blade Pro. It's what some of the cool kids were using for knife scales.
DO you think you could CNC a complete 1911 or AR15 or complete an 80% with your set up? IYAOYAS
Yes, they will fit on the machine and the Trormach is rigid enough to handle it.
@@LastBastionLabs I'll send you a Ar15 80% lower if its legal in your state and your game trying and will post it.
@@navyav8r653 It is not legal and please do not send.
@@LastBastionLabs No Problem I won't. Ive been thinking about getting the same set up as you and thats how I came across your channel. My issue is justifying a 15k machine. I'd like to be able to CNC complete LS race heads and custom AR lowers.
Would you mind sharing your g- code for the fixture?
email me at Lastbastionlabs@gmail.com and I will try and send you what I have. I'm using fusion 360. I would make the fixture wider in gen 2 fyi.
Really enjoyed the video. Great work, well explained and humorous. Very inspiring. Great when people put their personality forward in videos. Makes all the difference. Never thought of a toilet seat as a fixture before. Were the grips made of kingwood? Any warping of the wood after machining? Very close to ordering my own Tormach for my projects. Thanks, Kieran
This was a slightly different format and I was not sure how it would go, Thank you! I did my grip in rosewood that I bought on Amazon. I did not have any issues of warping after machining. I did receive some rosewood that was warped. Just pull the trigger on the Tormach and let the adventure begin!
Awesome job on this. I love your content, you definitely deserve more subscribers. Keep at it and keep the quality up and I know you'll get there.
Btw, machineable fixturing wax would also work well for holding small metal parts with limited flat surface area. It's a little bit more trouble to apply than Loctite and has a tad lower temp rating, but faster "cure" time and definitely gives a more positive hold that should lower your pucker factor by an order of magnitude.
Keep up the good work!
Thank you Jon! Your comment made my day. I will look into machinable fixture wax, I'm all about lowering the pucker factor.
Do you do custom work?

And just like that... your subscribers went up, and I'll share with frinds and family. Nice planning, attention to detail, and artistry. I appreciate not only the end results, but the ways in which you took us through the journey. Bravo! Yes, the Tormach is wonderful, and a blessing, but it is as a fine race car; never what it could be without the right driver.
Thank you Robert, that is very kind. Welcome aboard. I hope to worthy of your time.
Very cool. What is the book with the grip dimensions?

Thank you
Great vid Tim. Would love to see more detail on machining the wings (cutters etc) or similar. Pretty impressive work and nice to see on the 440.
Question: Was your ball cutter used on the grips a Harvey? Been eyeing one of their ball cutters w the wiper, yeah I’m not sponsored either🥺
Jesse, I mostly followed John @ NYC CNC. ua-cam.com/video/-8upDZVgxfc/v-deo.html.
I also use this type of cutter I buy off of amazon. .25mm and smaller. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08FSZVL1D/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
@@LastBastionLabs Thanks for the reply Tim. I’ve pretty much gone blind staring at John’s (NYC) and Grimzmo’s vids 🙈
I’ve seen some other grip making vids, but I really did like this one. Very good job 👍
Question: What about the larger ball mill at 8:43ish?
My grandfather was a naval Aviation Machinist before & during WWII (USS New York, USS Oklahoma - pre Pearl), cruisers and misc thereafter), he was a lifer. My dad went into the Marines (1960)and my step-father was on the Lex (50’s). So from one military family to another, thank you for your service.
That was a .5mm tapered ball end mill. Tool 41, my go to tool. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N10SEDW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Thank you and Thank you family for their service.
Do you have a website?
No not yet.
Do you sell the jigs?
I would be happy too, however, I have moved and my shop is in Kit from as I finish my new space.
So nice!
Thanks. BTW you have a great channel! Let me know if I can make a part for your buggy. Love that thing.
@@LastBastionLabs Thanks!
Not really into machining, but this project was really freakin cool- Excellent outcome, really great work
Thank you very much!
Really cool. You've inspired me and now I'll have to make a set of grips for myself. Might be a little lazier than you and just buy some blanks though. Definitely some tiny tool work going on there. How fast did you end up spinning on those wings?
Thank you. Good luck on the grips. You do not need a fixture, its just more handy. I was running 10K on the spindle. That's the max RPM for the Tormach 440. If you have more RPM, use it.
@@LastBastionLabs yeah I doubt I'll be going any faster on the haas haha. I'm not going to get 20k rpm outta the spindle on the the ol vf3
Great job and very aesthetic
Thankyou, It took a long time to work out the modeling and CAM.
SO! Were you an AX or an AW? Thanks for your service shipmate.
Thank you. I was an AW. Did you serve as wall?
@@LastBastionLabs Yes sir. I was an EW
Thank you for your service also!
@@1066marvin Thank you for your service!
These are really awesome! Hooyah!
Thank you very much. If I has any idea how much work it was going to be, I would have never done it.
Thank you very much! Are you an Aircrewman?
@@LastBastionLabs No, I'm a retired H60 AT
First and foremost, Salute for your service to our great company!
Thanks for sharing your video. Nicely done. I'm a Tormach mill guy too, just beginning to think about recording my machinist sessions.
I too have used NC Engraving for mounting optics on slides.
Thanks again for sharing, and Nicely Done!
Thank you! I hope you do and best of luck. Content is king.
