The debut and Lucifuge are incredible. Danzig's work in both the Misfits and Samhain is amazing as well. It was really intersting to see how Glenn Danzig evolved as an artist. The change of sound from Samhain's November Coming Fire which has a Goth rock meets metal and hard core punk to the debut which has a sparse Sabbath/ Early Zeppelin meets the Doors was quite incredible. November Coming Fire and Danzig's debut are my favorite two albums by Glen. He went on his own trajectory. A lot of the time it worked and sometimes it didn't but he was an artist who forged his own path. And what an unbelievable voice. Great conversation.

I just recently heard the song mother on an internet radio show for the first time and had no idea who it was and i immediately loved that song. Im now gonna check out some of these albums starting with the debut.
My ranking is exactly the same as Alo's. The 4th and 3rd albums are very close to me, but I like the songs on 4th a little better. The 1st and 2nd are very close too. But the debut is more to the point. The 2nd has a better sound but is not a "10 killers no fillers" like the first one (and I like the dry sound on it - that Rick Rubin/Andy Wallace no reverb sound). Also, the debut was not only the first Danzig album I've heard, but the first time I ever heard Glenn singing. I knew about the Misfits, but by 1989/90 there was not a way in hell you could find a Misfits album in Brazil. PS; The "Lost Tracks" comp. is also a good listening - lot of gems there.
My favorite is definitely the self titled i liked it from the start. It just took my awhile to go beyond the first few albums. Probably because I was a huge Misfits fan from like age 10 and Danzig is way different musically so it took time to grow on me.
I was assistant A&R at Def American and also as one of Rubin’s personal assistants during the early 90’s when those great albums were being released. I knew Tommy Victor, Joey Castillo and Josh Lazie back in the day, Tommy and Joey are super cool guys, but didn’t get along with Josh at all
been looking forward to the show as I've heard Chris rave about the debut album before. after I watched this I headed over to one of The Contrarians latest ("You Can Only Listen To 5 Albums for the Rest of Your Life... From the Same Year!") and a Danzig album came up again early on.
My small issue with the first album is it’s straight-ahead hard rock with not much diversity. I like when they slow things down here and there. You know, mix things up. And for the hell of it, I included the cover albums... 1. Danzig II: Lucifuge 2. Danzig III: How the Gods Kill (I have an OG vinyl pressing) 3. Danzig 4 (My original thin digipack is beat to hell) 4. Danzig 5. Deth Red Sabaoth 6. Circle of Snakes 7. I Luciferi 8. Skeletons 9. Black Laden Crown 10. 6:66 Satan’s Child 11. Blackacidevil 12. Danzig Sings Elvis
So IMO: 1. III 2. II 3. I (All awesome, what an amazing band, great sounding records too) 4. Circle of Snakes (A bit cheap sounding and suffers from the nu metal market norms of the time but a lot of the songs are very strong) 5. 6 6. 7 (Patchy, bad NIN vibe w/ the production but a good handful of strong songs still) 7. 4p (honestly think this is a mess, great Biscuits performance but the songs massively regress back into Samhain territory and waste that killer band's potential) 8. Deth Red Sabboth 9. Black Laden Crown (Bizarre cheap production, I appreciate the economics of the Biz has changed but why bother if you aren't going to treat your art w/ a little respect - just jam them out live w/ the band SST / 70's rock style, f'christs sake! 10. Blackacidevil (Absolute car crash, I really love the Waxtrax industrial scene and I kinda get the idea on paper (esp w/ Glen's ego and why he'd want to get rid of the band) but the results are spectacularly cringe, genuinely one of the worst records I own)
1-4P 2-How the Gods Kill 3-Deth Red Sabaoth 4-Black Laden Crown 5-l Luciferi 6-Lucifuge 7-Danzig 1 8-Blackacidevil 9-Circle of Snakes 10-Satans Child I love every one of these albums. They are all good albums I can listen to each one from start to finish.Being a huge Samhain fan.I don't listen to production quality as closely as a lot of people do.I can appreciate some of the complaints people have with some of the mixes and production.I appreciate the later albums like Deth Red and Black Laden alot.Because I just appreciate that Glenn is still putting music out.He wouldn't have to.I highly doubt Glenn is making much money from them.If he was greedy he would stop making new music and just tour with the Misfits.I think his catalog is so great because of so much diverse sound.Bands that sound the same every album get boring in my opinion.Ac/DC is a good band but after a while.I feel like I've heard it all before. My question is when if ever are we going to get remasters of Danzig 1-4?I would like remasters of the first six albums.
Love Death Red im in the trash business and I find CD's all the time and I came across this one and had wrote Danzig off for years It's my # 4 great stuff
Personally I think black laden crown is great. But I agree the mix could better. I like most things Tommy victor is part of including obviously prong and the ministry
My #1 was always II Lucifuge because it was the first one I bought even though I did know like 4 songs from S/T but I bought II used at Rasputin Records in Berkley Ca. and the previous owner put an orange biohazard sticker on it and wrote in black magic marker EVIL so I had to buy it and when I played it I was blown away. I still own it of course and I did buy Black acid devil and absolutely hated it and stopped buying Danish after that, maybe I should check more out I only own the first 4 and black acid devil and Death Red.
1. Danzig 4 2. Danzig 3 3. Danzig 6:66 4. Danzig 2 5. Deth Red Sabaoth 6. I Luciferi 7. Danzig 8. Circle Of Snakes 9. Black Laden Crown ---------- The Lost Tracks of Danzig is fantastic compilation! Danzig 5, Skeleton & Elvis are WTF slash facepalm
Crazy to me that Danzig was introduced to me through Metallica and their Misfits covers, listened to the debut and thought "HOLY CRAP IS THAT JAMES??" during Twist Of Cain... I love that debut, man, it's genuinely phenomenal. Weird to think about how Metallica started doing covers of Misfits songs during 87? James did the Danzig I songs in that same year probably... then Danzig and Metallica blew up. Now all these years later, in turn, the Misfits have went from sort of underground cult band to one of the biggest reunions and punk bands of all time.
1. Lucifuge Highlights- The entire fucking album. 2. How the Gods Kill- Title Track, Dirty Black Summer 3. Danzig 4- Until You Call On the Dark, Little Whip, Cantspeak 4. Lost Tracks- Lady Lucifera, Soul Eater, Bound By Blood 5. Danzig 1- Twist of Cain, Am I Demon 6. Circle of Snakes- Skincarver, Black Angel White Angel, 1000 Devils Reign 7. Deth Red Sabaoth- Hammer of the Gods, The Revengeful, On a Wicked Night 8. Blackacidevil- Sacrifice, Hint of Her Blood 9. Black Laden Crown- Devil on Hwy 9, Last Ride 10. 666 Satan's Child- Lilin, Belly of the Beast 11. 777 Luciferi- Wicked Pussycat, Black Mass
@@seaoftranquilityprog But they we're so important, during the dawning of the NWOBHM, they we're pioneers of that style. But then as an American band!! And they never made one weak album... I love the first 4 albums. Bit of a drop off for me after that. 🤘 My college roommate got Danzig 2 when it came out. We played it to death. 1 and 2 are my favorites, but not sure which I like more.
my ranking would be: 1. Danzig III: How the Gods Kill 2. Danzig 3. Danzig 777: I Luciferi 4. Danzig 4 5. Danzig 666: Devil's Child 6. Danzig II - Lucifuge 7. Deth Red Sabaoth 8. Circle of Snakes 9. Black Laden Crown 10. Blackacidevil (i still like some of the album though)
My Ranking of Danzig album 1 - Lucifuge 2 - S/T 3 - How The Gods Kill 4 - 4 5 - Circles of Snakes 6 - 777 - Luciferi 8 - Deth Red Sabaoth 9 - 6:66 Satan's Child 10 - Black Laden Crown
Been waiting for this video for a long time. Chris’s ranking is spot on I think. Danzig 5 is one of those fascinating albums akin to Celtic frost ‘Cold Lake’ or Discharge ‘Grave New World’ where a band just totally jumps the shark and fucks up creatively after such an innovative run. Blackacidevil is so bad I find it pretty funny sometimes actually. The opening line on it where SCREAMS out ‘girl I’m gonna make you c*m!’ Over bad programmed beats used to make my friends and I chuckle back in the day. Also I’m sorry but when he has been doing his own production over the last few albums Glen is ruining albums that actually have some decent songs!
For me, right now (might change, some of them are so close in ranking for me). 1. 4P 2. How The Gods Kill 3. Satans Child 4. Danzig 5. Deth Red Sabeoth 6. The Lucifuge 7. Circle Of Snakes 8. BlackAcidDevil 9. I Lucifera 10. Black Laden Crown I enjoy a bunch of the covers on Skeletons and Danzig Sings Elvis is... well it is an album of some sort. I dig DemonSweatLive, the two studio originals on that is great! The Lost Tracks of Danzig is mandatory listening, some really great stuff on there. I'm not a fan of Kiss The Skull and I despise Wicked Pussycat (worst song he ever wrote imo), remove those and perhaps another song or two from I Lucifera and add all the songs from Lost Tracks recorded during that album and I Lucifera would probably be in my top 5.
Hope you do a tribute on Tim Bachman from Bachman Turner overdrive sadly he passed away it’s been rough time for the bachmans first Robbie and now Tim? Rip Tim
Not a big fan,but he's produced some great "Darkness". I've always referred to Glenn as - Black-magic Elvis. Probably like 50% of his catalog....which includes: DANZIG,DANZIG 2,HOW THE GODS KILL,CIRCLE OF SNAKES.
I listen to Danzig since Vol.1 that I bought in 1989. The first 4 albums are very good, after which his voice and compositions declined. but I still listen and respect him. Long live Glenn!!! 1 - Danzig II: Lucifuge 2 - Danzig III: How the Gods Kill 3- Danzig I 4- Danzig 4 5- I Luciferi 6- Circle of Snakes 7- Black Laden Crown 8- Deth Red Sabaoth 6p 9-Satan's Child 10 - Blackacidevil
I’d say it’s a toss up between Danzig 1 and 2 for their best album. Then How the Gods Kill followed by Danzig 4. Blackacidevil is obviously their worst. The rest of them don’t capture the magic of the first three (or four), but are not terrible either. I saw Danzig in Wiesbaden, Germany at a sold out show in 2018. They started with three of their newer songs and the crowd was not into it at all. But after that tame opening, the rest of the show was just classics from the first three albums, maybe one or two from Danzig 4 also, and the place went absolutely insane. The crowd singing along to How the Gods Kill nearly blew the roof off. Last song before the encore, Glenn said in an Elvis-like voice, «We got one more song to do. You know what it is!» It was of course Mother, and the place went even more crazy. He and the band definetly put on a great show that night. I had tickets for four Danzig shows in the summer of 2020, but unfortunately something came up and and they had to postpone them to the summer of 2021. Then something came up again and and they just cancelled the shows altogether. Now I guess he’ll never be coming back for a Europe tour again…
10) Blackacidevil - If Pete and Martin did an episode on "career killing albums", this would be high on my list. Breaking up the band and Rubin connection was not good and musically it felt like he was taking those first 4 records and throwing them off a cliff and going for a new sound he ill suited for. Felt like a betrayal, and thus I haven't given anything since much of a listen. If it was self-sabotage, then 100% mission accomplished! 9) (Everything else post Blackacidevil) 4) How the Gods Kill - the title track is my all-time favorite Danzig song, but side 2 is just too up and down and loses my interest at times. 3) 4p - It is kind of long but has some really good moments. Let It Be Captured is so poignant. 2) the debut - This has the bands best performance and Rubin's sparse yet charming production. Chuck's drums are superb. A flawless quick listen. It's very hard not to put it #1. End of Time is an excellent deep cut. 1) Lucifige - I love the blues so this is the album that truly hooked me. It does lose a little steam toward the end, but the first 7 tracks completely hit the mark.
1) Danzig 2) Danzig II - Lucifuge 3) Danzig III: How the Gods Kill 4) Danzig: 4p 5) Circle of Snakes 6) Deth Red Sabaoth 7) Danzig 777: I Luciferi 8) Danzig 6:66: Satans Child 9) Black Laden Crown 10) Danzig 5: Blackacidevil
Always going with the first one. Got it when it first came out and it had just enough Samhain hanging over it to be the perfect transition from that (underrated in my opinion) band and the more metal leanings of Danzig. Once the lyrical terrain went to more generic "Devil-Sacrifice-666" themes, Danzig completely lost me. Misfits will always be tops for me but Samhain had a great atmospheric aura to it that's a great counter to the Misfits horror magazine blood and thunder.
I got back and forth between Lucifuge and How the Gods Kill being my number one. The debut is my number 3, and the fourth album is 4. I adore all of those albums with the original lineup. Danzig 5 was a huge disappointment. I really like good industrial metal. Danzig 5 is not good industrial metal. No one wanted a Danzig album that sounds like dollar store Nine Inch Nails. Luckily, Danzig got back on track with the next few albums.
Nobody sounded and looked like Danzig in 1988, it was a breath of fresh air. Their first three albums are amazing, after that it's hit and miss.
The 4th album is Amazing also

I knew Tommy Victor, Joey Castillo and Josh Lazie back in the day, Tommy and Joey are super cool guys, but didn’t get along with Josh at all
I saw Glen with the Misfits this year at the aforementioned Misfits show at the Rock.At age 68 he still got it
been looking forward to the show as I've heard Chris rave about the debut album before. after I watched this I headed over to one of The Contrarians latest ("You Can Only Listen To 5 Albums for the Rest of Your Life... From the Same Year!") and a Danzig album came up again early on.
Horror Business is my favorite Danzig album.
My small issue with the first album is it’s straight-ahead hard rock with not much diversity. I like when they slow things down here and there. You know, mix things up.
And for the hell of it, I included the cover albums...
1. Danzig II: Lucifuge
2. Danzig III: How the Gods Kill (I have an OG vinyl pressing)
3. Danzig 4 (My original thin digipack is beat to hell)
4. Danzig
5. Deth Red Sabaoth
6. Circle of Snakes
7. I Luciferi
8. Skeletons
9. Black Laden Crown
10. 6:66 Satan’s Child
11. Blackacidevil
12. Danzig Sings Elvis
Only 1 min in and I can not wait to hear Alo rant about Danzig 5. The anticipation is palatable...
So IMO:
1. III
2. II
3. I
(All awesome, what an amazing band, great sounding records too)
4. Circle of Snakes
(A bit cheap sounding and suffers from the nu metal market norms of the time but a lot of the songs are very strong)
5. 6
6. 7
(Patchy, bad NIN vibe w/ the production but a good handful of strong songs still)
7. 4p (honestly think this is a mess, great Biscuits performance but the songs massively regress back into Samhain territory and waste that killer band's potential)
8. Deth Red Sabboth
9. Black Laden Crown
(Bizarre cheap production, I appreciate the economics of the Biz has changed but why bother if you aren't going to treat your art w/ a little respect - just jam them out live w/ the band SST / 70's rock style, f'christs sake!
10. Blackacidevil
(Absolute car crash, I really love the Waxtrax industrial scene and I kinda get the idea on paper (esp w/ Glen's ego and why he'd want to get rid of the band) but the results are spectacularly cringe, genuinely one of the worst records I own)
1-4P
2-How the Gods Kill
3-Deth Red Sabaoth
4-Black Laden Crown
5-l Luciferi
6-Lucifuge
7-Danzig 1
8-Blackacidevil
9-Circle of Snakes
10-Satans Child
I love every one of these albums.
Really sad we didn't get to hear a Alo rant on the Elvis album, that needs its own episode really
Pete. I don’t disagree about Black Laden Crown. So explain to me why we love Hotter Than Hell so much.
Cause the songs are amazing...
The first 2 albums and most of the 3rd album are flawless!
1. Danzig 4
2. Danzig 3
3. Danzig 6:66
4. Danzig 2
5. Deth Red Sabaoth
6. I Luciferi
7. Danzig
8. Circle Of Snakes
9. Black Laden Crown
----------
The Lost Tracks of Danzig is fantastic compilation!

3. Danzig 4- Until You Call On the Dark, Little Whip, Cantspeak
4. Lost Tracks- Lady Lucifera, Soul Eater, Bound By Blood
5. Danzig 1- Twist of Cain, Am I Demon

Nobody ever mentions Soul Eater and how badass it is
Dirty Black Eye.😅
Hi Pete, I always enjoy your rankings most, but one important legendary American metalband is missing. Can you do a ranking of RIOT(V)??
they have a ton of albums, and I only have the first 7 of them...
@@seaoftranquilityprog But they we're so important, during the dawning of the NWOBHM, they we're pioneers of that style. But then as an American band!! And they never made one weak album... Isn't it time to give them the attention they deserve? You did so many other bands, with also loads of albums...
Maybe do a ranking on their albums up to Thundersteel?
@@jaysonraphaelmurdock8812 and let another expert do the next part of their carreer ...?
Loving the John Carpenter shirt Pete!!
I love the first 4 albums. Bit of a drop off for me after that. 🤘
My college roommate got Danzig 2 when it came out. We played it to death. 1 and 2 are my favorites, but not sure which I like more.
my ranking would be:
1. Danzig III: How the Gods Kill
2. Danzig
3. Danzig 777: I Luciferi
4. Danzig 4
5. Danzig 666: Devil's Child
6. Danzig II - Lucifuge
7. Deth Red Sabaoth
8. Circle of Snakes
9. Black Laden Crown
10. Blackacidevil (i still like some of the album though)
My Ranking of Danzig album
1 - Lucifuge
2 - S/T
3 - How The Gods Kill
4 - 4
5 - Circles of Snakes
6 - 777 - Luciferi
8 - Deth Red Sabaoth
9 - 6:66 Satan's Child
10 - Black Laden Crown
Pete when are you going to rank monster magnet albums? They seem like too big a band to have been missed! Also how about killing joke and ministry?
Danzig II is one of the best metal albums ever.
Huge Danzig fan seen them many times I'll go 1, 3, 2, 4, circlle of snakes, 7, red deth , 666, laden, and 5 is horrible, great show guys.
For me, right now (might change, some of them are so close in ranking for me).
1. 4P
2. How The Gods Kill
3. Satans Child
4. Danzig
5. Deth Red Sabeoth
6. The Lucifuge
7. Circle Of Snakes
8. BlackAcidDevil
9. I Lucifera
10. Black Laden Crown
I enjoy a bunch of the covers on Skeletons and Danzig Sings Elvis is... well it is an album of some sort.
Rip Tim
My top 4 are: 3, 2, 1, 4
I love ""Satan's Child"".It is a very,very dark album.Almost menacing in a weird way.
1. Danzig 4
2. II-Lucifuge
3.III
4.Danzig I
I'm not sure exactly how I would rank them all, but Lucifuge is number one for sure.
Not a big fan,but he's produced some great "Darkness". I've always referred to Glenn as - Black-magic Elvis. Probably like 50% of his catalog....which includes: DANZIG,DANZIG 2,HOW THE GODS KILL,CIRCLE OF SNAKES.
I am not surprised if this is with chris alo
Safe bet
DRS rules. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
I listen to Danzig since Vol.1 that I bought in 1989. The first 4 albums are very good, after which his voice and compositions declined. but I still listen and respect him. Long live Glenn!!!
1 - Danzig II: Lucifuge
2 - Danzig III: How the Gods Kill
3- Danzig I
4- Danzig 4
5- I Luciferi
6- Circle of Snakes
7- Black Laden Crown
8- Deth Red Sabaoth 6p
9-Satan's Child
10 - Blackacidevil
11:33 circle of snakes
12:48 red death sabaoth
17:47 satan's child
I just double checked to see if I have the original pressing of Danzig II with the booklet folding to a cross and I do not. 😐
My top 5
1- Lucifuge
2- Danzig
3- How The Gods Kill
4- Danzig 4
5- Deth Red Sabato
🤘
Whoa---oh... under Her Black Wings..... whoa-oh... under HER BLACK!........... wings.
Duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh
Duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh...
Zeer-oh the Heer-oh!...
4,3,2,1 all good. classics.
I love The Misfits, Samhain and some Danzig…mainly the first 4 albums!! After that I like a lot but there’s also a lot I don’t like
10) Blackacidevil - If Pete and Martin did an episode on "career killing albums", this would be high on my list.
9) (Everything else post Blackacidevil)
4) How the Gods Kill - the title track is my all-time favorite Danzig song, but side 2 is just too up and down and loses my interest at times.
1) Danzig
2) Danzig II - Lucifuge
3) Danzig III: How the Gods Kill
4) Danzig: 4p
5) Circle of Snakes
6) Deth Red Sabaoth
7) Danzig 777: I Luciferi
8) Danzig 6:66: Satans Child
9) Black Laden Crown
10) Danzig 5: Blackacidevil
Always going with the first one. Got it when it first came out and it had just enough Samhain hanging over it to be the perfect transition from that (underrated in my opinion) band and the more metal leanings of Danzig. Once the lyrical terrain went to more generic "Devil-Sacrifice-666" themes, Danzig completely lost me. Misfits will always be tops for me but Samhain had a great atmospheric aura to it that's a great counter to the Misfits horror magazine blood and thunder.
My top four are 4, 3, 1, 2
I got back and forth between Lucifuge and How the Gods Kill being my number one. Luckily, Danzig got back on track with the next few albums.
the first 2
The first 4
First, Jamie with Pat Benatar and now, Chris with Danzig. Pete is like Santa Claus to his contributors, lol.
1. Danzig II 2. Danzig I 3. Danzig III 4. Deth Red then the rest.
The first four are awesome....after that I feel it's kinda of a mixed bag.
