Just got home here and beautiful San Antonio Texas...saw that Dustin Abbott had a new video out, made a tasty beverage and sat down to watch. Great video my friend 👌🏾
Thanks Dustin. As you have emphasized, the fact that third party auto focus lenses in the RF mount are becoming available is very important news for those who have embraced the Canon Eos R. It is interesting to note that last year at this time many were bashing the Canon Eos R as being well behind the Nikon Z and perhaps not worthy of purchase. Canon has supported the Eos R with a series of important updates and one has little trouble seeing that the opinion of the camera has improved dramatically. The importance of third party RF glass should not be minimized.
I was looking at the Canon R, because the price was nice. But I decided against it, because I did not want a full frame body without stabilization. Later, I seriously checked out the Canon R5, because it has great video features high on my list. I was getting quite serious about it, until I looked at the available native lenses. Not one bright wide or ultra wide lens. Nothing. Not even on Canon's road map. *In the end, it was the lens availability* that made my decision for me - never mind that I prefer the Canon's user interface, general ergonomics and the fact, that the Canon R5 had the overall more complete mix of video features.
Hey could you please do the review of the RF 16mm f2.8 STM!? I saw a bunch of them, but none talking about using threaded filters, since 43mm is not so usual size.
Super looking forward to part 2 if u haven't uploaded it could u possibly throw a quick vlogging test in i'm really interested in picking this up for the RP just to vlog with... Thank you
Awesome videos with really helpful comments for buying lenses! I am now subscribed! I am looking into buying Samyang AF 14mm F2.8 RF - in the video, you say that the auto distance scale does not show up. I use my camera mainly for astrophotography and I have only done it few times with the rented 15-35mm Canon lens! The auto distance scale on the display helped me a lot there... How do you figure out whether the focus has been set to infinity if the auto distance scale does not show up? (I use EOS-RP and 15-35mm Canon is way out of my budget!)
I just checked, and no, there still isn't an auto distance scale on my R5 and with the lens updated to the most recent firmware. The focus guide does work, however, so that will help for astro.
If I dont care about AF, and image quality is more important, should I go for this lens or the Nisi 15/4? And no, I dont plan on doing Astrophoto either. Thank you for all the in-depth reviews and tests
7 days Ah drat ... next week can’t come quick enough as looking forward to the image quality and video performance test. Samyang first with a AF RF lens. I hope they push out more lenses like this ASAP
Saving for this lens now. I love my canon 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 stm lens, but it struggle in low light. Hopefully the Samyang does a much better job for vlogging?

Thinking of the R6 for the theoretical better low light performance (and cheaper) with this 14mm lens, the 35 f1.8 and upcoming 85mm f1.4, thoughts and opinions please?
I swear I'm not senile, but I watch some of your videos more than once! I'm still debating if I should get the Samyang now or wait for enough spare cash for the Sony 14mm, given that the Samyang does not benefit from focus breathing compensation for video use.

@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks for the info I have the IRIX but use it only for low light and astrophotography and it is adapted to the R body. I bet IRIX will be follow in the near future. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Hi Dustin, just a quick question, regarding the new samyang AF14mm RF, compared to the AF14mm EF (canon) from a pure lens perspective, is there any difference ? or it's just the mount which is different ?
There is a difference (though I haven't used the Canon version). They don't have the same optical formula or even the same angle of view. This lens is more similar to the Sony FE version.
How would you say this lens stacks up against the samyang xp 14mm 2.4 ? I use it on the Eos r and its a beast to the say the least, would like a 14mm in native rf mount but would need a lens on par with the xp. also Merry Christmas :)
I have the EF and using the RF adapter, it works well but you loose some auto functionality. Using the focus peak function on the canon R really helps as a starting point for infinite focusing along side using the digital zoom focus to fine tune you really end up with a decent setup. I am also curious how this compares to the RF version optically. One thing I hope they have improved in is vignetting. I really have to clean up some of my image edges with this lense post processing, but not so bad to to be discouraging, I am just very picky with my images.
I have been using the RF MF 14mm f2.8 and really enjoy it. I do find manual focus is easy on the EOS R, however I would like to sell my MF lens and upgrade to the AF mainly for exif data and ease of correction in post. This also looks more compact than the RF MF lens, that lens is just the EF version with a adaptor tube screwed on.
It means that the camera can pretty much focus in the dark. To illustrate what it means, underexpose a shot by 5 stops (that's -5 EV) and see how dark it is. That's the conditions this combo focused in.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks for the answer, but I still don't understand. Underexpose by 5 stops compared to what settings? ISO 100 and a certain shutter speed at full aperture?
Set the camera on auto, note the settings, and then switch to manual. Start with those settings, and then increase the shutter speed 15 "clicks" (there are three clicks per stop of exposure). Take the photo with those settings - that will show you -5 EV.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I know very well how a camera works ^^ you didn't get what I meant. I don't know how to ask it differently, but thanks for your time. Ev is not a measure of luminosity, but a reference to the correct exposure. Your focus point don't care about your final exposure, but only the luminosity of your scene. For me a correct indication would be "up to xxx lux" for example, that's what I don't understand.
Good question, but I don't have an answer to it. Such a lens could really help for RP shooters, for example, that aren't looking for a 50mm lens that costs twice as much as their camera!
I have heard about a 50mm F1.8 for RF but with IS. Unfortunately I would imagine this would cost similar to the 35mm, Canon really need a lens for the system around £150
Anthony Teasdale I hope they never do those 50mm at 150$ like the ef... usable from f4 what’s the point of having f1.8? They need a good 50mm like the 35mm

It’s a shame this lens got shut down by Canon, as it is very useful.
With the attached lense hood, can you use an ND filter?
Not a screw in one. You'd have to move to a rear filter system (which is what I do)
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to answer that.
So I looked for the rear ND filter. The only option I found was RF to Ef. I want to get the lense with the rf mount. Is there an option for that?
