I consider him one of the truly great game show hosts, I was a child of the 70's watching what my parents did, a lot of game shows. His personality was infectious, he was having so much fun I couldn't help but enjoy what my grade school mind was seeing. Watching him now, in my 50's I still feel the true joy and love he felt.
I was fortunate to be a contestant on two of Bill’s short lived Bob Stewart game shows, Blankety Blanks and Pass the Buck. He was just as charming in person as he was on the air.
He sure seemed to be a very devoted man to go through so much and still be so successful! I never knew about the health issues but I do recognize Bill Cullen as a celebrity! Very admirable guy!
Not mentioned is his regular panel gigs like "To Tell The Truth" and "I"ve Got a Secret" hosted by Garry Moore. That's where we really get to see him shine.
In Oct. 1962, as a 16 year old, I and three other teens went to NBC Studios, NYC, to be in the audience of whatever shows that were being 'taped' that night! After not getting into the "Tonight Show" with new host Johnny Carson, (taped at 8 p.m.),we were successful in seeing "The Price is Right!" with Bill Cullen, who was most entertaining & he told stories about his being a pilot! It was a great night & totally free! R.I.P. Bill!
Once when the live TV camera did not turn away quick enough I got a very brief glimpse of how hard it was for him to walk. I was a child at time, but it stuck in my mind because my father had similar physical difficulties.
Two things, the original Price Is Right was on NBC and later ABC. Also, Bill was unavailable for TPIR when it was revived due to the fact that he emceed Three On A Match on NBC, which aired from 1971 to 1974.
Absolutely, we feel the same way! Thank you for sharing your sentiments and for watching our content. What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
I remember Bill Cullen on numerous game shows and I seem to remember him most for his boundless energy and his ever-present smile. Growing up, though, he wasn't much different to me than Wink Martindale, Allen Ludden, Tom Kennedy and Gene Rayburn. The only one who was different was Art Fleming, the original host of Jeopardy!
I first remember Bill Cullen as a panelist on the 1970s version of To Tell the Truth. He was equally adept as a panelist as he was a host. Sharp as a tack.
Bob Barker was no "up-and-comer." He was the very popular host of Truth or Consequences, hand-picked for that show in the 1950s by the origional host, Ralph Edwards.
I like to recommend that people see Barker's first episode of Truth or Consequences. Ralph Edwards says some really prophetic things about Bob's career in the opening.
Bill was probably my favorite game show host along with Gene Rayburn. I love to watch reruns of Blockbusters and the Match Game. I think Bill was a great guy and a great host ❤
I always thought that Bill Cullen didn't do the "Price Is Right" revival because it would be taped in Hollywood while Cullen was tied up in New York hosting "Three On A Match".
Bill Cullen was the best game show emcee. He had a great sense of humor. He had a tough life. I used to listen to him hosting a segment on NBC Radio Monitor on the weekends
Always liked him...clever, funny and a spot on show host.... I think he set the stage for Pat Sajak especially....loved his "Eye Guess" during my college days. RIP.
Bill Cullen was a pioneer in game show hosting. We grew up watching him on Price Is Right. We also saw Art Fleming host a new show called Jeopardy which ran for years. Both Bill & Art didn't try to crowd their game shows with their personalities if you know what I mean. If anyone remembers the game show "Video Village", you saw the future host of a new game show called "Let's Make A Deal", Monte Hall. One more game show host that I will never forget was Jim Lange who hosted the Dating Game. Gene Rayburn hosted The Match Game. Alan Ludden hosted Password. Dick Clark hosted $10,000 Pyramid. And not so far long ago, Steve Allen's old side kick of the Tonight Show, Regis Philbin, hosted "Who Want's to be a Millionaire".
I remember all those shows! I was just a kid when most of them were on in early years but I loved Match Game! I also remember Monte Hall in Let's Make a Deal." I of course remember The Price in Right in the early years as my mom use to watch most of these shows when I was a kid. RIP to all!
My first introduction to Bill Cullen was in fact on "Hot Potato." I really liked that show, and it had a catchy theme song. 😂 Also, I used to watch "Joker's Wild," and it was good, too. I never knew he was a smoker. I'm truly sorry that he left us when he did. Nevertheless, I'm grateful for the childhood memories that he played a part in. 🙂
Great video. I remember Bill Cullen from Eye Guess. My family had the home game of that show. I never knew he was so sickly. But he was determined to work. I also remember the Joker is wild with Jack Berry. Game show was much better back then. I don't care much for them now. But I will watch reruns of an oldie when it available. Robert Redford directed a movie in the 90's about a game show scandal that was pretty good. Thanks for the memories. Will be waiting for your next video.
Cullen's work as a radio host are overlooked now. He hosted WRCA's "The Pulse" weekday morning show in New York City in the 1950s, and he was a popular rotating host of NBC Radio's weekend magazine show, "Monitor", until its finale in 1975.
I saw Bill and his pretty wife Ann serval times in Tattletales hosted by Burt Conley. He was always laughing and a good player. His was , Ann, was polite and didn't wanted to steal from her famous husband as most other wives in that show did by talking a lot, or trying to be cute to get attention.
Anyone remember when Bill was the host of the short-lived Wordplay game show? He had to leave halfway through because of health issues and was replaced by Jamie Farr, of all people. He (Bill, that is) was always so funny and likeable on that show! He's still missed.
For a channel that calls itself "Facts Verse", you seem to play very fast and loose with "facts": - original Price is Right premiered on NBC, NOT CBS - Cullen filled in for Allen Ludden on Password Plus while Ludden was being treated for stomach cancer. Ludden returned briefly but when the illness returned, he was replaced by Tom Kennedy, as by that time Cullen was hosting Chain Reaction on the same network and thus unavailable - Cullen never HOSTED Match Game or Tattletales, although he appeared on both as a panelist - it's also a big omission to not mention his work on To Tell the Truth in the 70s, including his brief stint as host while Garry Moore was treated for throat cancer. Cullen was also considered to replace Moore when he retired, but producers didn't want to break up the chemistry with the other panelists, so the gig went to Joe Garigiola - lastly, you fail to mention how Cullen became a "go to" host particularly for Bob Stewart, who created Price and Password before striking out on his own. Often a new show would seek to find a host "like Bill Cullen"... only to end up actually hiring Cullen for the gig All these facts are readily available through a variety of sources...do the research if you want to call yourself "Facts Verse"
Also, failed to mention, "I've Got a Secret", on which Cullen was a regular panelist from 1952 to 1967. For most of its run, IGaS was live, as was, "The Price is Right". So, Cullen hosted a live morning radio show M-F 6am-10am, had a cab waiting to take him to the Hudson Theatre for the daytime, "Price", and on Wednesday (starting in 1961, Monday) nights, over to CBS Studio 59/52 (later Disco Studio 54), for the live telecast of IGaS at 9:30 or 10:30. On Wednesdays, Bill had a really full day, with the primetime, "Price" airing live at 8:30 from the color-equipped Colonial Theatre, and racing 16 blocks to make the live IGAS show. There were no rehearsals for daytime TPiR for Bill, as the show had a stand-in for daily rehearsals, who provided Bill with notes. "Price" producer, Bob Stewart allegedly said, "I would rather have an unrehearsed Bill Cullen, than any other host WITH rehearsals."
In 1972 Bob Barker was not an up-and-comer. He already was the host of "Truth or Consequences" and also hosted the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants.
I was fascinated with Pass The Buck and Blockbusters when I saw them as a kid in the 70s & 80s. I have been on replicas of those shows and many others through the work of some guys in California that do replicas of every game show ever aired.
Bill Cullen was the undisputed king of Games Shows he's been doing it before Pat Sajak,Richard Dawson,Bob Barker,Burt Convy,Steve Harvey,Dick Clark,Wayne Brady,Alex Trebek,Monty Hall,Michael Strahan and Ryan Seacrest.

Bob Barker was a game show host for years before this. Truth or Consequences was a long time TV favorite in our house. I was very upset when that show went off the air. Never did care for the price is right.
Legend has it that when the UK-based producers of Who Wants to be a Millionaire decided to bring it to the United States in 1999, they originally wanted Bill Cullen to host it, not realizing that he had passed away in 1990.

I just recently started watching To Tell The Truth on BUZZR. It is the 1970s version that is being aired currently. I assume Bill was a regular panelist during this run along with Peggy Cass and Kitty Carlyle.
I know Bill Cullen since I was little and was in school back in the 1980s.I knew Bill on Blockbusters and Child's Play and also on Hot Potato and saw. him when he was a celebrity guess on Trriva Trap with the host of Bob Eubanks when he was play a seniors against the juniors on that game shore
I have several bones to pick with video. First of all, Bill Cullen NEVER hosted Match Game, that was Gene Rayburn. Second, Bill didn't host Password until it became Password Plus when he filled in for Allen Ludden who was in the hospital at the time and that was only for a month. Geoff Edwards guest hosted Bill's show at the time, Chain Reaction. Third, the original Price Is Right was cancelled in 1965 because of falling ratings. Also, Bill never hosted a syndicated version of The Price Is Right. It was always daytime and nighttime on the networks. Bill couldn't have hosted the current Price Is Right anyway, because it was totally different from the original show with its bigger stage, etc. Bill also hosted 23 different game shows.
Bill couldn't host the CBS revival of, "The Price is Right", not because of the stage size (Mark Goodson could have staged the show to accommodate Bill), but because Bill was already hosting, "Three on a Match" on NBC, which would run another 18 months after "TPIR" premiered on CBS. NBC would not allow Bill to host another show on a competing network. You are correct on all other counts, and Facts Verse needs to check its FACTS, before posting videos.
and quite obviously goodsen todman and cullen never had a beef over the new price is right. for those that don't know, i think every or nearly every game show bill appeared on or hosted from then on was part of the family of gameshows from todaman goodsen. i don't know if they kept him busy with those to make up for losing the reboot, whether they really liked him and working with him and kept him or a combo of both. obviously they kept him for a reason. i don't think other than perhaps the joker's wild he did another game show that wasn't in that production company unless he appeared as a celebirty on 25000 pyramid or something like that. I love bill's sense of humor and what he brough to the game shows i hope he's in heaven running like a kid having a great time. and i get to meet him some day
He may have hosted it a few times, but I think he was a frequest Panelist on "To Tel the Truth.." I had heard he was paralyzed and couldnt' walk, but kept that hidden from the Audience..

I love bill's sense of humor and what he brough to the game shows i hope he's in heaven running like a kid having a great time. and i get to meet him some day
Nice video facts verse 👍👍👍👍
