- Опубліковано 28 чер 2008
- Live, 1987; with the Stedelijk Helmonds Concertkoor and the Metropole Orkest; from `Words For The Dying-The Falkland Suite´; poem by Dylan Thomas, produced by Brian Eno
From the Velvet Underground to this...
John Cale is a musical genius, no less.
Couldn’t agree more looking forward to seeing him in October all being well
BTW....this is what I read at my Mother's Funeral when she died from cancer.
So....I know about loss...but this poem has a message....so take it....and run....PLEASE.
{don't respond to me about my Mother. She has been gone over 10-yrs, so I am past it....but TYVM for your sympathy}
I Just wanted to let you know how much a kind act can accomplish.
I have 3 children...and if they never achieve anything....if they show kindness to those who they meet...I will be happy.
I wish you all well.
John Cale, my dearest friend, when I listen to you, I feel like myself again
Just so haunting, it gets more powerful with every hearing, stunning orchestration!
my new favourite john cale song
he might actually be my favourite singer. absolutely powerful voice.
Besides the amazingness of this song, I don't think John Cale has ever looked so amazingly handsome as he does here. Just an absolute picture of class and intelligence and soul.
Yes!
Don't do drugs?

I had drinks with Eno in the late 80's. It was one of those happenstance meetings. John Cale was there, and I ended up with a great tale.
Nice people.
Cheers!
Tell the tale please!
Tell the tale
Lucky, very lucky you, Mr. McGovern!
BS
in late 89 I bought the lp but didn't know he had been playing it live in such a classy manner as early as 87. This is golden stuff - thanks a lot for sharing! A Revelation!
One of the greatest performances of any modern musician - unforgettable.
This is The Falklands Suite (poems by Dylan Thomas sung by John Cale, 1989). 1. On A Wedding Anniversary 2. Lie Still, Sleep Becalmed 3. Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night 4. There Was A Saviour. Record version produced by Brian Eno.
This was on the radio the day after my dad died. That's when I first heard it. It was the poem, not this song. But I love John Cale too.
Gorgeous! I also frequently turn my poems into songs, and it is magical when the music just bursts forth as if it was meant to be, thank you for sharing this.
I enjoyed very much
John Cale, "Godfather of everything": "While the Argentine flag was being raised on South Georgia, I was fevereshly embarking on a comprehensive setting of the collected poems of Dylan Thomas. Each night I would sit with Alan Lanier in his apartment in New York City thrashing from one poem to another with the tape running. By the end of the war I had arrived at "Lie Still, Sleep Becalmed" and it seemed that of the nine poems done in all there were four that felt all of a piece."
paris1919を連想させる雰囲気。
最近のテクノロジーと向き合った音作りや、パンクロッカー・ロックンローラーとしてのジョン師匠も大好きだけど、この時期のエレガントな音作りもたまらんです!!
I have never heard this before, and as a former English major and VU fan, I thank ForARide for posting this... Amazing.
an absolute Cale masterpiece - as is everything on this amazing set! I particularly like the use of slide here. Neat!

Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night
BY DYLAN THOMAS
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
I wonder what Dylan Thomas would make of John Cale's orchestrated version...? I'm smiling...
Completely bewitched by this clip for the last three days. Teaching the poem to my year 10s at the minute.
Dylan Thomas genius.Personally love frost.Tom Hardy genious olde novels.
Taught the class of 73 monochromatic choir in B class welsh baritoneNot easy when you are only versed in Black Hills ionosphere generetic cacophony.

fing brilliant
This is great.
Amazing.
Love the poem, kinda love this thou.
Amazing riff! Catchy!
I have to admit...I thought this was absolute garbage at first...but it really started to grow on me..
do dah dah dit dit dit dah...
do dah dah dit dit dit dah
do dah dah dit dit dit dah...
do dah dah dit dit dit dah...
I see....it represents the monotony of life...of time...and the droning nothingness that slips from us.
The more I listen...the more I like...
Perhaps a little fast...but still love what was done for the risk and the ability to envision it! Well done!!!
Around 3:30 it suddenly begins to reflect the poem that we all know and love. There's a swelling to the music, a sense of disparity and overwhelming doom to the tone of the music. I just love it. Absolutely love it.
extraordinario !
A GEM ‼️
Exellent
I love you diesen song. was für ein gesangliches wow erlebnis.danke john cale!!!
ich liebe dich auch
..and it doesn't need to be grave as the poem is optimistic despite imminent death, and that might be just a natural example of irony in life, unintentional irony, as our whole existence seems to be ;)
WUNDERBAR !
amazing music and rythmes
Those boys are now in their mid 40s.
Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night

Lucha por vivir, no, no entremos dócilmente en esa noche serena. Nunca.
beautiful!
Que grande Dylan Thomas !!!
honestly, i miss their smiles :))))
thi is good
17 shots of whiskey ended the Welsh poets life.
IS THE WHOLE CONCERT AVAILABLE ANYWHERE? IT WOULD BE REALLY SOMETHING SPECIAL TO WATCH IT ALL...
Actually, the term in music for using the wood part of the bow is "col legno" and, while not common, it is well-acknowledged.

Thanks for allowing the response. Appreciate it.
i´m stricken
children's choirs are always mental 👀👀👀👀
it's an electric grand piano (something like a Yamaha CP-80)
I think the message is a little different, those alive need you still to struggle against the last part of your life, because in your last phase of life, we want to validate what we have done.
I don't know if it was suggesting a way of life of 'seize the moment,' but rather a way to cope of recognition of the strength of the human spirit.
Just my take on it
I like very much Cale and `Words For The Dying-The Falkland Suite´, but I have'nt pay any attention to the lyrics. I just read them and really this music is a pop love song in contrast with the poem. The rythm of the poem demands also a totally different musical rendering.
no, i did some wikiing. you can see the table format, the strings, a slide, and the pick. These are all features of the pedal steel
i loled
@MisAnnThorpe Give it a few listens (like so much of Cale's work). It grows on you.
In the end no one can take your existence away from you! There's something you wanted to do at some point so just do it and stop paying attention to the world!
Rage Rage At the Dying of the LIGHT
fight the new world order ! fight the illuminati !
the closing of day gives birth to do not go gentle into that good night and therefore the rage against the dying of the light is rage against the birth of darkness /sunset
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
(Do not go gentle ) into that good night.
Old age should burn and rave at close of day/sunset;
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
(and) Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right?, /(day)light is wrong (sunrise)
they do not go gentle into that good night /sunrise
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
(and) Do not go gentle into that good night, (birth)
Rage, rage against the dying of the light. (death)
...the words of the wise have forked no lightning and the foolish are deaf and old age should burn and rave at close of day/going into that good night crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, (and ) Rage, rage against the dying of the light (sunset) and do not go gentle into that good night (sunrise)

Thanks google
@Buildaburgerdurka I completely agree.
hahaahaha Interstellar! They should have played this at the end credits of the movie oh gosh
I can see this man has a talent but this is not a little ditty of a song This is a beautiful powerful poem. Made so with the spoken word . Only sixteen shades BrazenRogue im sure its more than that.
what is the instrument cale plays?
You're to harsh, I love the Dylan Thomas classic but this is a very nice interpretation of the poem.
@GDS4VR
It is, isn't it!
@pimmeke07 That is so cool. How did he find you guys?
Does anyone know who plays steel guitar here?
@GDS4VR Read Dylan Thomas if you get a chance. In the 60's he was required + I'm glad he was. Also, Kevin Ayers "May I?"
@barakobama WAY COOL!!!!!!!
How is this legal
batterycock are you SURE that's the Smith's Rhythm Section?! (LOVE that to be true...)
What you on about then?.Look up an north for my comment.
Does anyone know the chords????
This goes harder than Pitbull
LOL, playing with their bows upside down. To funny!!!
@Eagle50461 hahahaha genau ;)
@Buildaburgerdurka Indeed, dear youtuber.
0:33 "Damn I'm drunk"
The verses soudn like I Wanna Be Your Dog.
What this poem means...beyond the obvious tribute to Dylan's Father is....FIGHT....do NOT be repressed...do NOT be subjugated. MAKE the future. Do not be it's observer.
A contemporary fictional movie..."The Terminator" said it best: "NO FATE EXCEPT WHAT YOU MAKE."
Get involved in the world around you.
If you'll notice the bows are only upside down when they are plucking the strings with their fingers as professional musicians I'm sure they have no need to actually put their bows down while playing in this manor.
Col lengo is a technique, search It up

@Buildaburgerdurka
Imo an horrifying music for such beautiful poem
Anyone get here from google assistant?
its called a piano ;)
I'm a very big fan of John Cale but I just find this deadly dull. No pun intended!
pedal steel guitar
can see where interpol stole its style from
Lots of praise in the comments. Does anyone else not feel that the original poem / lyrics don't inform this song and performance at all and that Cale is just doing a fluffy Cale song?
Fluffy? Fluffy cloud of pretentiousness is where you are stocked
Nice but you can stop the song now
what the hell has he done to this poem - its like a soap advert - thomas is spinning in his grave
I'm not expert, but isnt this a little too 'cheerful' for this poem?
Good effort...but Dylan Thomas sings his own poetry beter when he recites it. And the music do not represent the state of the soul for this avatar. Sorry, thumb down.
Why are they pretending to play the violin with their bows upside down? Strange at best. Rosewood will not produce a sound. The bow must move across the strings and plenty of rosin on the horse hair. What a joke this is!!!!
