This gave me a more clear idea of her playstyle as an "Opportunistic Brawler". I've got the combos down and the cancels and all that but I was struggling to put them into practice effectively, bouncing between frontline brawler and backline assassin either accomplishing nothing in the front or getting a pick in the back and getting blown up for it 😂 She seems to shine the most in the middle of a fight when things get hectic and everyone has cooldowns running where she can snag people out of position or who aren't able to fight back. Thanks for the insight.
THANK YOU for going over how to actually play her! i am literally the 1st person you described in how people play and i find it so hard to and try and take out supports/healers. i know there are some people out there who are so good at magik they actually can go into a group of 4 and take them out with no problems. after you mentioned how magik can be a good support for tanks dealing damage, i decided to try that out and i was doing a lot better! i think i'll use that to get to know her better before i go into dive bombing
animation cancel the proj into the uppercut so the damage connect at the same time, stops any pesky heals. the melee cancel with the proj into a melee into a pummel hit also nice
This has been insanely refreshing, especially the bits about "in low elo this is going to be hard". Especially the tank mirroring bit, I genuinely kept thinking I was doing something wrong on that front.(I was, but in a different sense)
@@SillySphark yea that's a consistent issue I tend to have when it comes to these types of games. It really helps to narrow where my problems are, I just gotta adapt more. They might be doing it "wrong" but I ain't playing in higher elo so doesn't matter(as much).
I know this vid is a little old now so ppl won't see this but I wanted to leave some info. I find that the reason Magik works so well on the frontline is because she excels in chokes and near cover. Placing demon in chokes generates crazy shields to help you engage. If you want to play the assassin playstyle on Magik then you need a plan on where to go after you try for the combo. If magik gets caught out in the open, she is dead and that's it. If you can always be one stepping disc away from cover, then you're golden. I think Magik is about farming shield, finding opportunities for a combo, and then maximizing safe positioning. Panther can be on top of the enemy backline dashing for 2 whole years and be fine but Magik cannot
Amazing guide, you covered a lot lot about the character which I really like. Additionally, the demon is really good at destroying stationary entities like Penny’s spiders and Raccoon’s ult.
I play Magik because I loved her growing up i had all the comics she was ever in. So when I first loaded up the game when it came out and saw her actually make the base roster I was so happy. I don’t care if I suck with her, I’m going to play her in this game 😂 thank you for the tips and help! I’ve been doing pretty well as Magik, but tips and incite from other people help 😁
Something I don’t think people talk about enough is that if you just half charge the projectile then you can still insta kill with the dash you just need to pommel strike after the air swing
Been loving magik. I agree with all the other comments about how good this guide is compared to others I’ve found. Been doing well climbing on magik(plat 2) and getting mvp’s most games. I totally agree with everything you’ve said especially about tanks. When playing with my friend who’s actually good at tank the game just feels so easy it’s crazy, but having a super passive tank just stand there always makes me just want to swap to storm and do nothing -_- but yeah appreciate the guide keep on keeping on
This is a really quite good guide, I have been looking for one for a while and finally found yours and Prez's. Most I've found are just gameplay compilations, and I'm more used to these types of tactical macro and skill micro-heavy educational vids since I'm coming in from Overwatch. Very helpful!
I love the video!! I do also want to say that a lot of magiks I see don’t take advantage of her bonus shield, and they need to play w/o the expectation of being healed. Her kit allows her to maximize survivability, so taking advantage of health packs + her bonus shield is vital. What makes the whirl really good in aoe is that you can hit multiple targets in combination with your dash to guarantee a kill and gain enough shield to do a second cycle of your cooldowns before having to fall back(or just to survive over extending). You can also just hit most things with a health bar to regenerate more sheild (loki’s clones + using your sword throw on your way out of a fight after a refresh). This way you can still have good survivability when doing an assassin playstyle /w a scared tank or supports that dont have time for you. Don’t worry if you’re not mvp, killing the supports and keeping the enemy team occupied plays a massive role. (idk if this helps with credentials but i just hit plat 1 one tricking with magik)
I wish more people making these guides on PC would consider the fact that a lot of play on console and saying things like “whenever you use your shift” like dude idk what ability that is. Just say “whenever you use your teleport” or something. Then regardless of platform people still understand what you’re telling them to do. Otherwise absolutely goated magik guide.
This had a lot more to do w me being new to these vids so I had a hard time putting my thoughts into words. I plan on making a revised guide where it has more clarity for the tips I gave
@ I apologize for being insensitive, I honestly don’t know how long you’ve been making videos like this, and it was still a great video, it was just a pain having to translate what you said into console lingo in my mind, I humbly request going forward that you specify abilities keybinds between both platforms and I will immediately sub to you lol 🙏🏼🔥
@ Now adays i read off the ability name and specify the action of the ability since both versions can look at the list so its easier for all of my viewers to see :) But thank you for the comment! :)))
Never played a lot of overwatch or hero shooters in general so going over just the way to collab with tanks and healers is super useful, even with me not playing Magik. Really appreciate it.
I like the mindaet of this guide and really you took the time to explain situations a bit combos are important to know but knowing how and when to use them is better
Great guide! But you forgot one pretty important part. You can cancel the melee with the rightclick. Just like you can cancel the lefclick with the melee. You can weave all kinds of combos if you apply that knowledge especially on the enemie tank. When the enemy tank seems to get a little low or a healer is distracted or in a 1v1 against a tank you can just go full throttle damage with shit like "left click -> melee -> right click -> leftclick -> melee -> E -> leftlick -> melee" Since everything flows into each other so well its 415 damage very quickly (for magik). And its not like this is isolated. You can start at any time while swinging. You can just spike up in damage real quick without necessarily needing to commit. You can change plans at any time. You don't need to comit to the E. You can save it for escape purposes or for the healer who is the reason why the target wont die. My favorite thing about magik is that the kit is simple yet so versatile, situational and well flowing. Once you get a feeling for all the transitions between hits and figure out what works best in what situation she becomes so fun and a total beast.
This one was a massive help since even with one tank I was just waiting in opponents backline my chance to kill there support but that happend very rarely since we were always losing the teambattle.
Thank you for the guide. I come from Reinhardt and I find myself trying to hold frontline with her and brawling. Changing the mindset is difficult, but I’m going to give it a try!
Put your demon beside the doorway but not in front because it makes you able to get hit + it will get shot (keep in mind it doesnt hit behind walls even if slash animations show it so dont put it behind the "lip" of the door either)
Thanks for the video! I've been trying to learn Magik to be my main over Psylock..... she's not quite there yet but I'm getting better haha. Definitely was the second player more. Gotten better since I've been more patient.
theres another combo you can do, harder but more damage can even burst down tanks, shift LMB > insta E > LMB cancel with melee > animation cancel with RMB > LMB cancel with melee other than that just perma shift RMB enemy frontline for sustain

Good guide! I'm glad it helped you! I recommend watching replays of high level players a little j to see what they are doing BEFORE diving j to help you out a Lil bit!(:
One very important thing is that her LMB swings HAVE damage fall off and pretty big one, you go from dealing 65dmg at 4,5m and less, down to ~30dmg at anything beyond 6m, so if you cant hit them will your quick melee, you might aswell not hit them at all,(thats not true lol) but if you CAN you should try to wait that ~0.5 seconds more to close the gap before attacking, especially if you are flanking as to not give away your position too soon, that ~30dmg difference May be the reason why their healer had the time to turn around and heal your target. Amazing guide nonetheless
@empicamper all of this is stuff that I found later as I played but thank you for posting it here for the people to see (: AND ALSO THANK YOU SO MUCH!!((:
Thanks dad. I'm learning Magik and doing pretty well on my own,but it's been taking forever to find someone who can properly explain how to play her. ❤
Magik has been my OTP to D2 other than the occasional flex to support, and oh god the amount of times I just wanna scream cause our tanks won’t walk up and I’m forced to flank then I get flamed… ahhhhh why do I play this hero XD
@@agnuswulf Keeping good mental and focus on improvement over winning, it's easy to tilt on such a do or die hero since a single mistake is all it takes. People will also flame you regardless of how well you're playing especially in lower elos if your team is losing, just mute and focus on your own gameplay cause nothing you say will change their mind. Lastly if you're not having fun just don't play, pick another hero or different game entirely; I've stopped playing for now despite peaking higher than my s0 % cause of current meta
This was a really good guide. I already knew most of the basics here, but the strategy tips were eye-opening. Up until now, I had been playing mostly as the backliner you described, and I was getting extremely frustrated at my lack of survivability. There were several matches where I've had to play a bargain bin off tank, and I realize now that those were some of my best performing matches because I was forced to stick with the team instead of trying to gank from the rear. If I can suggest, could you potentially do a follow up video talking about counter play and counter picks? Maybe with some footage of you dealing with some of the more annoying targets? It's the area I seem to struggle with the most. I already know some of my hard counters, but it would be nice to know how exactly I can deal with a Hawkeye who absolutely deletes me as soon as I poke my head out of a doorway, for example.
@Metrikon9000 I thank ya for the kind words! Magik is still my main ik I'm posting other teaching vids but I'll have some more stuff on her up prob tonight (:
Nice vid! I definitely agree with putting the demon behind the enemies. Also thanks for pointing out that she needs a proper tank. Ive been confused why my plays have been inconsistent outside of my bad games. Somehow my dumbass never thought about a scared tank killing her potential 😔
the combo at 4:10 doesn't kill squishies. using TP>spin attack>Dash>M1>Melee leaves luna with less than 10 hp in practice (the bots seem to have slightly less health). you'd either need to add in sword beam after the melee, or just use it in place of the melee.
@SillySphark I mean, Luna's hp is 250, but she has like, a pixel of health left if I end the combo with melee. I think practice ignores the seasonal damage buff, so it doesn't kill 250s in practice but does in a match, at least for now
@@SillySphark Yeah, I misremembered which combo left her with the magic pixel. I was playing around and tried using m1>melee>sword beam>m1>melee and _that_ left her with a magic pixel of health
I actually really like doing the whirl into dash combo but having the dash connect instead of going past in dark child (especially as a first engage). It’s like an instant delete button where even great supports won’t have the time to react.
18:24 Lmao so me when I first started handling her ult "its over the dark child is out the closer is here!" 🤣 just to die everytime before I ko'd anyone with the ult
Combo with quick and highest possible damage: Shift + left click with E. You'll swing your sword even further, much further, and if you get the timing right and aim, you'll lift your opponent because of the E. That's a just to gain range. Using E without Shift + left click will only cause slightly less damage. After lifting the opponent: Left click + V + right click + left click + V + Left click (If you are taking a lot of damage and in danger of being killed, do not give the last blow with the left click, finish the combo with second V). Escape with shift + right click (if you can, use it in the direction of your opponents to prevent anyone from trying to chase you). By getting everything right you can quickly take around 60% or so of life from any tank with 800 health.
Its prolly a bad thing I find myself playing the role of my tank when he isnt. Ending the game with tank stats, high damage, high damage blocked, low kills but we end up winning (plat lobbies)
usually when I utilize Darkchild is not to wipe the enemy team, well not all the time. But in scenarios where you're heavily pressured, and so far your team has built up their ultimates, but can't get the tension to engage in a teamfight, both you and the tank can just put pressure on their frontlines until there's an opening from their tanks, then both you and your tank can engage the teamfight. or if there's case where your team needs an opening to fight off the pressure of the enemy team, you can let your tank take care of distraction and meanwhile you set yourself up to engage the supports to break their formation as long as you can sustain yourself. or if you did a backline method and killed either support or their dps while the tank's putting up the pressure infront, you can engage with your ult tense up the pressure causing them to break and let your team break through. I'm still fairly new of playing the game and all I've been using is magik, but throughout learned how to play here through mistakes, specially diving in and ulting causing you to die, losing the ult charge. when using the ult think of it as a high risk engagement, so plan wisely when using your ult.
If I ever made a revised guide I would prob include much of this. The game was still a bit new when I made the original and I figured touching on just the aspects of not throwing w dark child was important but didn't know at that point that it's not a hela ult in terms of safety but is more versatile for breaking through utility. V well spoken (:
Pro-tip: Let's get into the habit of calling abilities by their name and not their button input because hundreds of thousands of people are playing on different platforms and also customize their controls
@SillySphark No worries! "E" or "Right click" means nothing my guy. If it's too much of an ask to learn what your character does by name just say: "Primary/Secondary fire" "melee" "ultimate/ult" "Skill/Special 1/2/3/etc" "passive" "team skill" Future proof your format homie. That said, your contact isn't bad and I hope to see more from you ^-^
id say jump around your target when your 1v1 and your skill are on cooldown. magik attack will hit them when you spasm and jump like a manic because you have a big swing sword attack. while most characters need to aim to hit you. jump behind them back and forward. it's really god against hawkeye main's
I'm definitely the second magik but I'm learning the tech Edit: I can at least tell the demon is a literal demon though, nasty damage if the enemy is really aggressive about wanting to be in one area. I mostly use him for that and getting away from people that wanna hard push me.

As a magik main myself this guide is perfect, you even brought up how she can be kinda tank ish if used correctly
Im glad it came out so good i tried to cover as much as I could w out it being super long!
I'm glad to have helped my friend ((:
animation cancel the proj into the uppercut so the damage connect at the same time, stops any pesky heals. the melee cancel with the proj into a melee into a pummel hit also nice
Good guide on Magik. Every guide I've seen on Magik never talked about how to play her in different situations. This video is great.
Thank you so much ! I hope ur climb goes well my dood!
This has been insanely refreshing, especially the bits about "in low elo this is going to be hard".
Especially the tank mirroring bit, I genuinely kept thinking I was doing something wrong on that front.(I was, but in a different sense)
I think it's a bigg thing to understand that low and high elo are two v different games and both have v different goals for winning
This helped sooooo much. Took these tips into a few games, MVP every round with around 20 eliminations. Thank you!
Thank you. What you’ve taught me actually came in handy and has made me enjoy this character much more.
This changed the entire character for me mentally, and made me realize how I'd end up losing too a good magik. Thanks so much!
Demon is great and can be directed upwards and downwards depending on your angle when deployed
Amazing guide, you covered a lot lot about the character which I really like. Additionally, the demon is really good at destroying stationary entities like Penny’s spiders and Raccoon’s ult.
Ong it's been my favorite way to kill punisher on turret (: I'm glad you enjoyed I hope ur climb is going good!
@ Hoping to reach grandmaster tomorrow or the day after, thank you for your support!
She's def the coolest champ for me asw I hope you climb ((:
Magik's strength comes in feeding me eliminations no matter who I play 😅
Something I don’t think people talk about enough is that if you just half charge the projectile then you can still insta kill with the dash you just need to pommel strike after the air swing
0:47 bro you cant just talk to her like that...

Been loving magik. I agree with all the other comments about how good this guide is compared to others I’ve found. Been doing well climbing on magik(plat 2) and getting mvp’s most games. I totally agree with everything you’ve said especially about tanks. When playing with my friend who’s actually good at tank the game just feels so easy it’s crazy, but having a super passive tank just stand there always makes me just want to swap to storm and do nothing -_- but yeah appreciate the guide keep on keeping on
Thanks friend ((:
This is a really quite good guide, I have been looking for one for a while and finally found yours and Prez's. Most I've found are just gameplay compilations, and I'm more used to these types of tactical macro and skill micro-heavy educational vids since I'm coming in from Overwatch. Very helpful!
I'm glad you like it! I have more stuff like this coming really soon! I hope your climb is going well(:
@kuulkid9547 my goat
@beanienclogs That's great I'm super glad I could help you friend (: good luck in your climb of course!!
I like the mindaet of this guide and really you took the time to explain situations a bit combos are important to know but knowing how and when to use them is better
Best "How to" video I've seen on Rivals so far, good job! New sub 👍
My goat ((:
Great guide! But you forgot one pretty important part. You can cancel the melee with the rightclick. Just like you can cancel the lefclick with the melee.
You can weave all kinds of combos if you apply that knowledge especially on the enemie tank. When the enemy tank seems to get a little low or a healer is distracted or in a 1v1 against a tank you can just go full throttle damage with shit like "left click -> melee -> right click -> leftclick -> melee -> E -> leftlick -> melee"
Since everything flows into each other so well its 415 damage very quickly (for magik).
"Because the spiderman is probably doing nothing anyway" killed me 😂
This was an awesome guide. Love the "How to apply this knowledge" type explanations.
I come from genji and the mindsets are very similar!

Been hard stuck on magik since release and this still was so informative!
Glad to help :)
A lot of this was intuition for me but applying it to Darkchild is what really finally clicked thanks for the vid !
Put your demon beside the doorway but not in front because it makes you able to get hit + it will get shot (keep in mind it doesnt hit behind walls even if slash animations show it so dont put it behind the "lip" of the door either)
but great vid btw ;p
Gotcha gotcha thank you! :)

Thanks for the video! I've been trying to learn Magik to be my main over Psylock..... she's not quite there yet but I'm getting better haha. Definitely was the second player more. Gotten better since I've been more patient.
theres another combo you can do, harder but more damage can even burst down tanks,
shift LMB > insta E > LMB cancel with melee > animation cancel with RMB > LMB cancel with melee
other than that just perma shift RMB enemy frontline for sustain
Hearing about her ult combos and damage thresholds would have been cool. A lot of people are not aware of how to get the most out of it.

Good guide! I really have to get better at team location awareness and comfortability diving, im generally a support main (jeff in rivals, lifeweaver in overwatch) but im trying to pick up a new role and super not used to being in the other teams backline, but the other night when i was trying her out i had a LOT of fun and actually popped off quite a bit even just playing her a bit more defensive
I'm glad it helped you! I recommend watching replays of high level players a little j to see what they are doing BEFORE diving j to help you out a Lil bit!(:
@SillySphark that's good advice, I've been doing that and also spent a while practicing combos in training area to get the flow down of the timing
I want to see all the Vanguards broken down this way. I seems like they each have very different goals. I haven’t played a game like Rivals until now.
👀 I'll take a look!

@fulkrum_5 yeaa I forgot to mention how good it was on groot, penny and punisher util):
This is how I use it as well, it’s a great counter but can be hairy getting out of the mine field

I absolutely adore Magik but I’m dog water with her. This helped so much thank you.
I love you for this guide beautiful guide holy
the combo at 4:10 doesn't kill squishies. using TP>spin attack>Dash>M1>Melee leaves luna with less than 10 hp in practice (the bots seem to have slightly less health). you'd either need to add in sword beam after the melee, or just use it in place of the melee.
@ecanoya it kills 250 hp characters but not 275 I j forgot to add that in mbmb!
@SillySphark I mean, Luna's hp is 250, but she has like, a pixel of health left if I end the combo with melee. I think practice ignores the seasonal damage buff, so it doesn't kill 250s in practice but does in a match, at least for now
@@ecanoya Luna snows hp is 275 1 shot combo works on 250 targets
@@SillySphark Yeah, I misremembered which combo left her with the magic pixel. I was playing around and tried using m1>melee>sword beam>m1>melee and _that_ left her with a magic pixel of health

I actually really like doing the whirl into dash combo but having the dash connect instead of going past in dark child (especially as a first engage). It’s like an instant delete button where even great supports won’t have the time to react.
18:24 Lmao so me when I first started handling her ult "its over the dark child is out the closer is here!" 🤣 just to die everytime before I ko'd anyone with the ult
We all have been there
Easiest sub of my life.
Combo with quick and highest possible damage:
Shift + left click with E.
Also Practice this in the room where you can make people move around and jump, down behind luna and a ways to the right i believe.
Ong I didnt know that was there thank you lmao

It happens lmao
Its prolly a bad thing I find myself playing the role of my tank when he isnt. Ending the game with tank stats, high damage, high damage blocked, low kills but we end up winning (plat lobbies)
It's why we love magik
usually when I utilize Darkchild is not to wipe the enemy team, well not all the time.
Thank you for the compliment
ahh, it’s like learning to play ow all over again lmao
Feels good ik
Oh man, it never clicked in my brain the importance of that bonus health, I was just using her autos for heal, game changer.
I hope you climb man get that moon knight skin!
Pro-tip: Let's get into the habit of calling abilities by their name and not their button input because hundreds of thousands of people are playing on different platforms and also customize their controls
no youre right this was my first week so i was a tad nervous v sorry ab that :(
@SillySphark No worries! "E" or "Right click" means nothing my guy. If it's too much of an ask to learn what your character does by name just say: "Primary/Secondary fire" "melee" "ultimate/ult" "Skill/Special 1/2/3/etc" "passive" "team skill"
Future proof your format homie.
I'm definitely the second magik but I'm learning the tech
Edit: I can at least tell the demon is a literal demon though, nasty damage if the enemy is really aggressive about wanting to be in one area. I mostly use him for that and getting away from people that wanna hard push me.
