  • Have you ever needed a custom value shunt resistor, maybe to scale an analog current meter? Well, it is expensive to order various values from part houses and hope you hit the correct one. So, here is a method you can use to create your custom resistor, dial it in for the application. I have utilized this method many times, fixing Ham radios or designing a cool power supply. I hope this info is of use to you. For more of D-lab's designs and tech tips see: d-labelectronics.com or / dlab_electronics

Terry, you often demonstrate techniques that remind me of similar things I learned long ago. What you showed with the wire-wound power resistor made me recall a way to create custom value carbon-composition resistors. Basically, you use a small file to file a notch in the side of the resistor until it matches the desired value. Then you coat the resistor with something like varnish to seal it from moisture so it retains the new value. You use the next higher wattage value to start with, so it will still be able to withstand the dissipation. Use a 1/2-watt instead of a 1/4-watt, or a 1/4-watt to make a 1/8-watt, etc.
I'm only describing the basics of the technique, it has its faults and limitations, but at least it's an option.
