You are incorrect about the American version of Donkey Kong being "out of order" for the levels. The USA version IS the original. The Japanese cabinet came out AFTER. The levels are supposed to go 1-4-1-3-4-1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4...etc. The Japanese version is simplified. It takes legitimate skill to get to the Cement Factory in the American arcade.
Many arcade games come out in USA first and then Japan receives the updated or altered version. Sometimes (like Simpsons Arcade) the Japanese version is basically the *final* version, and us Americans essentially received the beta.

Something interesting to note is that a modified version of the NES Donkey Kong called “Donkey Kong Original Edition” was released for select Wii consoles and on 3ds as a Club Nintendo exclusive reward. It adds in the removed Cement Factory stage (with some changes to keep it on par with the NES levels). It’s pretty cool for what it is, although it’s currently impossible to legitimately obtain.
Fun Fact: The NES versions of Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and Popeye were the first 3 games released for the Japanese NES, the Famicom, on July 15th, 1983.
What is ironic, is the Atari XE cartridge version by Sculptured Software was more like the arcade. It even had the enemy intros. Yeah, DK3 actually had two of the CPU/APU of the NES in the arcade hardware. It will explain why the audio between nothing are so similar

When my mom would give me quarters to play games as we were leaving the store, I always used them on Enduro Racer or Yie Ar Kung Fu and I never saw more than Donkey Kong 3's attract mode. Yes the sound effects are different due to the fact that Dk, Dk Jr. and Mario Bros. used analog circuits to create the sounds and music. While the NES versions including DK3 Arcade used a Sound chip to produce sounds and music.
I remember Donkey Kong 3 in the local arcade in the late 80's but that came down to the fact the owner of the local arcade owning multiple locations and never really getting rid of games , he also had a strange habit of importing unusual arcade cabinets , the result was the standard faire everyone else played but also some weirdness . Picture all the Nintendo cabinets ,Atari, Bally, Konami , Capcom , ect cabs and the usual standby's of the late 80's early 90s next to oddballs like Legion Spinner 87, Exerizer , Mutant Night , Atomic Robo Kid and later Splatterhouse.
Yeah UPL made some STRANGE games, and the arcade version is interesting in it's subtleties not mentioned ANYWHERE such as the "blank" power up icons when enough are collected allowing for an extra hit before you die. Of course being an arcade game compared to it's console conversions the difficulty usually ramped way up. Give it a go in MAME as the emulation there is perfect but expect to die a LOT.

Before ever playing Popeye on NES or even finally trying it at an arcade sometime in the 90's my earliest memory of that game was on the Commodore 64 computer.
The original Donkey Kong intended to be a Popeye game, but was later changed to a cast of original characters when the Popeye license fell thru. When Donkey Kong went on to enormous success, King Features Syndicate agreed to license the characters to Nintendo to create a Popeye arcade game in 1982.
I remember my mom woring at a bar in late 80s and early 90s. She took me there once during a short day shift to play the arcade and pinball games there. They had a small coffee table version of Popeye. I played the heck out of it. I was never keen on the original Mario Bros, but only played on NES after I had already played Super Mario Bros and Super Mario Bros 2. The first game was definitely just scratching surface pre side scroller. Donkey Kong is fun, Jr is better, and I remember renting 3, which wasn't horrible, but I remember wondering who the bugspray dude was.
In fact , Mario bros. was made arcade perfect in the 1993 rerelease of classic Mario bros for the nes , only in Europe , bringing back the teach segments and the cooler pests animation
Back in the days, the arcade classics series were pretty much 19.99 to 29.99 at the most in The Wiz electronic store. I used to play Donkey Kong NES and Popeye after owning them on the Atari 5200. I would always play Popeye after the Morton Downey Jr show. My mom would let me play till 2 am because of having insomnia as an 11-year-old and didn't want to get me on sleeping pills. It always beat watching Laurence Welk reruns. Just to have all the boxes laid out together was amazing in its self, great times. LMAO at the Regan reference, great vid dude!

the Atari 400/800 had all 4 levels as well as the "How Hi Can You Get" cut screen as well as Kong climbing the girder lever, although it was only in display mode. Jr for the 400/800 was also just as good as the arcade with all 4 boards in US order Wimpy did appear in the 400/800 Luigi was in Jr...he has the correct colors in Donkey Kong Remix
Mite be donkey kong Jr remix. It is a daughterboard that you can add to a DKjr PCB and play on an arcade cabinet. U simply take out the Z80 chip and plug the daughterboard into that socket. The daughterboard has a socket to plug your Z80 chip back into.
There's a Europe exclusive port of Mario Bros. for the NES that closely resembles the arcade version. Graphics and intermission included. It's called "Mario Bros. Classic Serie". Worth checking out.
I agree...DK3 is fun as hell, but I think you definitely need to play it in a cabinet. I am actually picking up a DK Jr. cabinet this Tuesday (quarantine mask and all)...got for a price that is too sweet to pass up!
I don't know when it was created but they gave it away for free on the 3DS at one point a version of the NES game donkey Kong with The pie factory/cement factory stage inserted as if it had never been removed.
Some corrections: Luigi was always coined as Mario's twin brother in his first appearance in Mario Bros, and he still is. The difference is that now they are Fraternal Twins as opposed to identical twins. This is also shown in the Yoshi's Island game series. As for the OG Mario Bros video game, the NES had released a 1993 UK version that was closer to the Arcade game, including the look of the creatures and the cutscenes. I went online and even looked up the cartridge and also have it in an Emulator. It is so great too as Mario and Luigi can change direction while in the air in a jump. The 1993 UK NES version is my favorite as the homeport version in contrast to the regular NES console version.
And in Donkey Kong 3 I feel the levels are also out of order I feel that the level where Donkey Kong falls from the vines to his death in the arcade version or has the beehive fall on his head in the NES version should come after the level with the orange bushes on the sides of the screen because that feels more like a final level rather than that being the second level
actually the correct order of the stages is in the Japanese arcade version. the US arcade version actually gradually adds stages as it goes along: stage 1, then 4, then 1, then 2, then 4, then 1, then 3, then 4, before settling with the correct (jp/nes) order. the same goes with DKJR.

Donkey, Kong and Pac-Man are the games that started it all. Donkey Kong was definitely the best Nintendo game ever put out and in my books. Definitely number one arcade game of all time!!

If you want to play a more accurate version of Mario Bros for NES you should play the "Classic" Edition version. Also, if you want the cement factory level in Donkey Kong for NES, play "Original Edition" Also, little correction. Arcade Mario Bros isn't Luigi first appearance. It's the Game & Watch version.
Cool video, glad to see someone else enjoy dk3. There is a game store near me that has one of those multicade cabinets and I play dk3 every time I go there as well as the local pizza place.
The US version of DK in the arcade doesn’t have levels out of order. It’s more of a build-up system. Each level ends in the rivet stage. Look at the upper right corner to see what level you’re on.
I honestly prefer how the JPN version is layered to be honest. I mean I like how the US version builds up, but I want to play all the levels since the first level.
It's pretty well known that the game boy version of donkey Kong has all those extra levels and allows you to cheat the first arcade levels by doing a handstand jump but what's probably less well known is The game and watch games that have donkey Kong 1 2 3 on there and they're actually completely different games not just LCD versions of the arcades.

Great video Wes. I always enjoy arcade to home comparison videos. Nintendo did a really good job porting their arcade titles for the NES. I spent many hours on these titles. Though I do not own a Switch, I am glad that the original arcade versions for some of these games are finally being released. I hope they all get home releases some day, of course Popeye would be a big obstacle. For a long time, I was not a fan of Donkey Kong 3. We had to play it for a competition earlier this year and I got the hang of it and now I'm a fan of it.
Thanks! It's cool that the original arcades are being released for the Switch, but $8 a pop is way too much. Doesn't matter for me, as I don't plan on getting a Switch. No way they'll be able to port Popeye though, which sucks, cuz the arcade version is a lot better than the NES one. And DK3 is a ton of fun! I liked it immediately!
$8 is a bit high for those titles. It is odd that Nintendo was the last holdout amongst the big name arcade developers to bring their titles to the home consoles.

Donkey Kong had incorrect scoring...the double barrel jump only awarded 200 points instead of 300. The Atari 400/800 was better for Donkey Kong as it had all 4 levels in proper US order, and the "How High Can You Get?" cut screen Luigi had the correct color overalls in Donkey Kong Jr REMIX there was a ROM that allowed Popeye to climb up and down the ladder in Level 1 Luigi was Mario's TWIN
Just imagine if donkeykong 3 was released as donkeykong 1, sure it wouldn’t had be an success either because of people considered it again as another shooter.
The arcade version of Popeye looks drastically better than the NES version because Popeye was one of the few "medium resolution" arcade games from that era. It was 512 x 448 while the NES was 256 x 240, which is "standard resolution" like most arcade games were (arcade Donkey Kong was 256 x 224 for example). Of course, even the standard resolution arcade games looked better than the NES because they had much more powerful hardware, but Popeye had much more powerful hardware _plus_ much higher resolution.
@@NefariousWes Bally Midway's Tapper (1983) is another medium resolution arcade game (512 x 480) from that era, which looks as good as Nintendo's Popeye; better actually, because in addition to great looking sprites, the background is more detailed, while Popeye has great looking sprites but rather crude looking background graphics (just solid blocks of color for the steps and platforms for example).
I would love Arcade1Up to team up with Nintendo to do a 12 in 1 with all of these games along with Punch Out and a few other games would be a day 1 purchase for me even at the price of 500.00
They won't. But even if the could. They couldn't bundle Popeye, mario bros and punchout with the donkey kongs. The kongs monitor is vertically oriented. Whereas the other 3 are horizontal.
i owned Donkey Kong / Donkey Kong JR / Popeye for the Atari 400/800 game system. these games played very close to the arcade at the time with all boards in US order although Popeye didn't have the bouncing skulls although it did have Wimpy on the see-saw.

I've actually had the idea to do a video covering these five games for well over a year now, but I scrapped it cuz DubiousGamingOnline started covering every NES game in order, and covered the Arcade Series. But I was like, "You know what? Fuck it, I'm doing it." and it actually turned into this. Ended up being a LOT more work that I had originally envisioned. But I'm pleased with how it turned out. And man, I wish we could play Mario Bros online. I've never been able to play with someone who knows what they're doing.

Great video. I remember playing DK3 in the arcade...it was weird but we filled it with quarters anyway...well until I taught the locals the "straw trick" (lol). Doesn't DKJ in the arcade have a level called Mario's Palace or something like that? Pretty sure they left that out of the NES port.
It was Mario’s Hideout in the arcade and that’s what the electrified stage with the sparks was called. The NES version and other home ports lack any between-level intermissions so the level had no real in-game designation or title in the home versions, it was just “a power plant” or “inside a giant computer” or something.

I actually went to the Boardwalk USA on Havana in Aurora. Used to go there while I was in middle school and played through so many games. Captain Commando, the Sega Spider-Man arcade, T2, and god knows what else. If only there was a barcade that offered that same card system while drinking beer. I would get my mail there!
Right on, man! It's cool when you find a channel from areas that you recognize. I just found a channel called: Mile High Game Hunters, and they search for games in stores only miles from my house. That was pretty cool.

When I was growing up you could tell a quality arcade because they had these thing called milk crates for you to stand on...... plus when my grandparents got me my first Nintendo in 1986 show you how much they are out of the loop I thought they had wrapped up double a batteries they were actually a role of quarters cuz my grandparents thought you had to put money in it to save in the kids piggy bank
As a video game geek, I’ve always wondered how exactly they were able to display the Popeye arcade character sprites in a higher pixel resolution than the HUD and background sprites (meaning that the animated sprites appear to have a smaller pixel size than the background and HUD, allowing them to look more smooth and “cartoony”, especially on a CRT screen where the pixels appear more blurred together). I’ve noticed multiple games that are able to do that, Tapper, Timber, and Sky Skipper being a few other examples. Did the computer board have 2 separate microchips for HUD/background graphics and animated graphics or something?
I still prefer the Coleco versions of these games since that was my first exposure. Also Colecovision had some creepy ass sound effects in some games especially in Mouse Trap it still creep me out. Awesome idea for a video.
I thought in the SNES game Yoshi’s Island it depicted Mario and Luigi as twins also the same remake that’s on all the Mario Advance game is also on Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga

Back in the days, the arcade classics series were pretty much 19.99 to 29.99 at the most in The Wiz electronic store. I used to play Donkey Kong NES and Popeye after owning them on the Atari 5200. I would always play Popeye after the Morton Downey Jr show. My mom would let me play till 2 am because of having insomnia as an 11-year-old and didn't want to get me on sleeping pills. It always beat watching Laurence Welk reruns. Just to have all the boxes laid out together was amazing in its self, great times. LMAO at the Regan reference, great vid dude!

the Atari 400/800 had all 4 levels as well as the "How Hi Can You Get" cut screen as well as Kong climbing the girder lever, although it was only in display mode.
Jr for the 400/800 was also just as good as the arcade with all 4 boards in US order

Mite be donkey kong Jr remix. It is a daughterboard that you can add to a DKjr PCB and play on an arcade cabinet. U simply take out the Z80 chip and plug the daughterboard into that socket. The daughterboard has a socket to plug your Z80 chip back into.

There's a Europe exclusive port of Mario Bros. for the NES that closely resembles the arcade version. Graphics and intermission included. It's called "Mario Bros. Classic Serie". Worth checking out.

I had Donkey Kong 3 for NES. The game is a Galaga/Space Invaders knock off set in a greenhouse.
I agree...DK3 is fun as hell, but I think you definitely need to play it in a cabinet. I am actually picking up a DK Jr. cabinet this Tuesday (quarantine mask and all)...got for a price that is too sweet to pass up!

I don't know when it was created but they gave it away for free on the 3DS at one point a version of the NES game donkey Kong with The pie factory/cement factory stage inserted as if it had never been removed.
Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong 2, and Popeye were the Famicom launch titles in 1983, with Mario Bros getting released a few months later.
Some corrections: Luigi was always coined as Mario's twin brother in his first appearance in Mario Bros, and he still is. The difference is that now they are Fraternal Twins as opposed to identical twins. This is also shown in the Yoshi's Island game series.
As for the OG Mario Bros video game, the NES had released a 1993 UK version that was closer to the Arcade game, including the look of the creatures and the cutscenes. I went online and even looked up the cartridge and also have it in an Emulator. It is so great too as Mario and Luigi can change direction while in the air in a jump. The 1993 UK NES version is my favorite as the homeport version in contrast to the regular NES console version.
I think it was the non-UK PAL region, particularly Germany, that received Mario Bros. Classic Serie?

And in Donkey Kong 3 I feel the levels are also out of order I feel that the level where Donkey Kong falls from the vines to his death in the arcade version or has the beehive fall on his head in the NES version should come after the level with the orange bushes on the sides of the screen because that feels more like a final level rather than that being the second level
actually the correct order of the stages is in the Japanese arcade version. the US arcade version actually gradually adds stages as it goes along: stage 1, then 4, then 1, then 2, then 4, then 1, then 3, then 4, before settling with the correct (jp/nes) order. the same goes with DKJR.

Donkey, Kong and Pac-Man are the games that started it all. Donkey Kong was definitely the best Nintendo game ever put out and in my books. Definitely number one arcade game of all time!!

If you want to play a more accurate version of Mario Bros for NES you should play the "Classic" Edition version.
Also, if you want the cement factory level in Donkey Kong for NES, play "Original Edition"

The US version of DK in the arcade doesn’t have levels out of order. It’s more of a build-up system. Each level ends in the rivet stage. Look at the upper right corner to see what level you’re on.
I honestly prefer how the JPN version is layered to be honest. I mean I like how the US version builds up, but I want to play all the levels since the first level.
It's pretty well known that the game boy version of donkey Kong has all those extra levels and allows you to cheat the first arcade levels by doing a handstand jump but what's probably less well known is The game and watch games that have donkey Kong 1 2 3 on there and they're actually completely different games not just LCD versions of the arcades.

if u want the arcade in ur house , then theres arcade archives on nintendo switch so u can play the arcade version at ur house and on the go

Great video Wes. I always enjoy arcade to home comparison videos. Nintendo did a really good job porting their arcade titles for the NES. I spent many hours on these titles. Though I do not own a Switch, I am glad that the original arcade versions for some of these games are finally being released. I hope they all get home releases some day, of course Popeye would be a big obstacle. For a long time, I was not a fan of Donkey Kong 3. We had to play it for a competition earlier this year and I got the hang of it and now I'm a fan of it.

$8 is a bit high for those titles. It is odd that Nintendo was the last holdout amongst the big name arcade developers to bring their titles to the home consoles.

Donkey Kong had incorrect scoring...the double barrel jump only awarded 200 points instead of 300. The Atari 400/800 was better for Donkey Kong as it had all 4 levels in proper US order, and the "How High Can You Get?" cut screen

The arcade version of Popeye looks drastically better than the NES version because Popeye was one of the few "medium resolution" arcade games from that era. It was 512 x 448 while the NES was 256 x 240, which is "standard resolution" like most arcade games were (arcade Donkey Kong was 256 x 224 for example). Of course, even the standard resolution arcade games looked better than the NES because they had much more powerful hardware, but Popeye had much more powerful hardware _plus_ much higher resolution.
It looks amazing for a 1982 game.
@@NefariousWes Bally Midway's Tapper (1983) is another medium resolution arcade game (512 x 480) from that era, which looks as good as Nintendo's Popeye; better actually, because in addition to great looking sprites, the background is more detailed, while Popeye has great looking sprites but rather crude looking background graphics (just solid blocks of color for the steps and platforms for example).
Speaking of Galaga, that was another arcade that was well done on the NES, though maybe it wasn't in the "arcade classics" series.

They won't. But even if the could. They couldn't bundle Popeye, mario bros and punchout with the donkey kongs. The kongs monitor is vertically oriented. Whereas the other 3 are horizontal.
loved all of these. played them all in arcades (yup even DK3.) Always wished Nintendo had made a sequel to Popeye.
i owned Donkey Kong / Donkey Kong JR / Popeye for the Atari 400/800 game system. these games played very close to the arcade at the time with all boards in US order although Popeye didn't have the bouncing skulls although it did have Wimpy on the see-saw.

I've actually had the idea to do a video covering these five games for well over a year now, but I scrapped it cuz DubiousGamingOnline started covering every NES game in order, and covered the Arcade Series. But I was like, "You know what? Fuck it, I'm doing it." and it actually turned into this. Ended up being a LOT more work that I had originally envisioned. But I'm pleased with how it turned out. And man, I wish we could play Mario Bros online. I've never been able to play with someone who knows what they're doing.

Great video. I remember playing DK3 in the arcade...it was weird but we filled it with quarters anyway...well until I taught the locals the "straw trick" (lol). Doesn't DKJ in the arcade have a level called Mario's Palace or something like that? Pretty sure they left that out of the NES port.

It was Mario’s Hideout in the arcade and that’s what the electrified stage with the sparks was called. The NES version and other home ports lack any between-level intermissions so the level had no real in-game designation or title in the home versions, it was just “a power plant” or “inside a giant computer” or something.
Ah, that's the name...thank you. The first time I saw it in the arcade as a very young kid I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. :)

I actually went to the Boardwalk USA on Havana in Aurora. Used to go there while I was in middle school and played through so many games. Captain Commando, the Sega Spider-Man arcade, T2, and god knows what else. If only there was a barcade that offered that same card system while drinking beer. I would get my mail there!

As a video game geek, I’ve always wondered how exactly they were able to display the Popeye arcade character sprites in a higher pixel resolution than the HUD and background sprites (meaning that the animated sprites appear to have a smaller pixel size than the background and HUD, allowing them to look more smooth and “cartoony”, especially on a CRT screen where the pixels appear more blurred together). I’ve noticed multiple games that are able to do that, Tapper, Timber, and Sky Skipper being a few other examples. Did the computer board have 2 separate microchips for HUD/background graphics and animated graphics or something?
It could be black magic for all I know.
