      That’s not a win you’re seeing, it’s the false dichotomy fallacy! They’re easily mistaken in the wild.
      He could keep it alive without ever fixing anything, he could fix some things and ruin others. He could push his political agenda through it more efficiently. There are too many ways to count in which he could mess up twitter just enough to not kill it.

      @@nuloom At the very worst, nothing happens. Maybe he tries to push his political agenda and piss off some twitter users. Ill admit that my comment was a little too watered down, but overall, elon must buying twitter is much more likely to do good than harm. Twitter has been bad, and would've likely remained bad under the original management. Elon musk buying twitter, love him or hate him, represents a major change in how twitter operates. Twitter is near rock bottom. Any change will either improve it, affect nothing, or make it worse, but you can't ruin a shithole. Anything bad for twitter just adds to the soup of bad, and means next to nothing in the grand scheme of things. It doesnt matter who is buying it or whether they are good or bad, the chance of fixing it, however slim, is worth it.

      @@dumbbass8867 i’m not sure i agree. i don’t enjoy the app myself, but i think it’s not the worst one out there. personally i’d say it’s a slight improvement over Reddit at its current state because at least by trying to fuel rage, it confronts people with alternate opinion. Sometimes that’s a problem, like ‘how about we have a discussion whether this minority deserves human rights’, but other times at least it doesn’t really submerge you into an echo chamber *entirely.* Just mostly. i think you’re underestimating twitter and overestimating the public’s ability to have taste or make changes quickly over tolerable inconveniences. i mean, 4chan still exists, and (apparently) without paying a subscription you have to solve an interactive captcha to post anything, not to mention the atrocities that come out of peoples keyboards there are probably the worst on the easily accessible internet.
      doubts aside, i sure hope you’re right. It’d be nice to preserve some advantages of twitter (like a profile timeline that doesn’t pressure artists into wasting excessive time on their work like instagram) and have a platform where a discussion is,,, somewhat tolerable.

      @@nuloom a lot of people use the term "echo chamber" when really we're talking about a platform where people just want to meet up and discuss a specific topic. I'm not sure why that's a bad thing. Reddit has specific forums for specific topics. That's literally it.
      And when can "echo chamber" become "not wanting to be harassed by aholes?" because if not being in an echo chamber means constantly being told im going to hell for existing or that my profession is part of a global conspiracy to vaccinate people so we can... *shrug*.... then maybe I'm fine with a bit of echo chamber.

    The echo chamber effect is a really, really big issue. All you get is confirmation, nothing to make you think. There are at least three significant groups are being left out of any discussion that takes place on social media. The older a person, the less "techy" a person and the more destitute a person, the less likely they are to be on social media.
    Over 61% of Twitter users are under the age of 34 years old and about half of those are between 13 and 24. That is a very large number of users that don't have a lot, or any, real life experience. Theres a reason why every culture in every part of the world through history has had respect for "elders". Life experience counts for a LOT.
    It's just like playing a game online. Buncha 16 year olds yelling and cussing at everyone with no respect to anyone or accountability.
    The less techy people is kinda self-explanatory. Don't have much tech and don't know how to use or don't care to learn to use the tech they have Lol.
    The more destitute of us is also kind self-explanatory. Can't afford a device or don't have constant and reliable access to the internet.

    Censorship is not the issue, nor bots, nor anything Elon wants people to focus on. The real issue in social medias (and I’ll include YT, FB and twitch) is the lack of transparency. It is reasonable to have those platforms enforce their own policies. The problem is that you never know really which policy you’ve broken. If you can’t trust the fairness of the system, you don’t care about breaking the rules. Try living as a law abiding citizen in a country ruled by corruption, and you’ll understand what I mean.

    • @makelgrax
      @makelgrax Рік тому

      Exactly!
      When the regulating entity is corrupt, fairness and rules have very little in common, and the opacity of the systems doesn't even allow to see the rules at play, so everything is a mess.

    • @nautil_us
      @nautil_us Рік тому +2

      Very true! But on the other hand, social media websites that do have full transparency like mastodon barely have any users and really struggle to become mainstream. So it's also partially a consumer problem, where they/we prefer the convenience of an already popular platform with no transparency above a new platform that has less users but full transparency

    @l2mloyalty929 Рік тому +41

    Even if the Twitter deal falls through, the statement of this whole purchase attempt (whether it goes through or not) would/has change(d) alot of questionable policies and also it brings to light certain issues, for example the number of bots found on Twitter was an inaccurate count, and it will force the company to focus on the problem that this revelation causes due to loss of advertising, marketing, verifying, etc.

  • @durgun8247
    @durgun8247 Рік тому +20

    You make the valid point that without other people having a way to affect the policy of the company via advertising there isn't any way to hold Elon accountable, but are the advertisers really the people who should be there to hold him accountable?
    Lots of corporate entities were(are?) invested in twitter despite it not being profitable for them to do so, because the value of twitter isn't in the investments, but in being able to affect the content moderation policies of twitter. It's never a good thing to have one man in unchecked control over something as powerful as twitter, although I think that's better than having that control open to whoever has the money to get on the board of directors.
    On the issue of user safety, I think that those issues should be dealt with in the law and not by twitter policy. Under common law, you're allowed to express your ideas, so it's perfectly fine for me to say "I think Jerry did this horrible thing that would end his career", but if I insteadclaim "Jerry did this thing that will end his career", then Jerry could sue me for defamation because what I said went beyond expressing an idea and became something that affected him in a terrible way.
    Twitter can't possibly go through cases like that in sufficient nuance, so it should be left to the courts, as that's their primary purpose. While I'm personally not too concerned about user safety, there is one thing that I do think should be enshrined into law as a way to protect people: doxxing. There will always be people who try to expose those on the fringes and the extremes, and extremists who see that they're having their activities exposed might try to silence those going after them with force. Because of this, I think that serious consideration should be put into how the law can stop doxxing without affecting free speech.

    The edit button isn't rocket science. Reddit figured this out a long time ago by just having it so that if you edit a post, it says that it's been edited. If you want to take that one step further, then editing will leave in the edits with a red line theory or something, basically as if you were doing copy editing. Again, these are problems there well understood in analog space. I don't know why it's so goddamn hard for Twitter to figure it out.

    Before you even start to consider his proposal for how he plans to deal with twitter, you first need to consider if his claims should be trusted at all.
    Look at all his prior claims about revolutionary things he proposes, with so many being nothing but vapourware to prop up his wealth.
    You have him reviving the 100 year old idea of vacuum trains, which lead to lots of false hype for his tunnel boring company (which even discussed making the tunnels hyperloop compatible) which also made a bunch of promises they have completely failed to deliver on.
    You have him promising solar roofs, even having a fake demonstration of it to sell his company and make money.
    You have him promising tesla trucks, and all sorts of things, with really short deadlines, and repeatedly failing to deliver.
    He is a snake oil salesman, so why should it be different with Twitter?
    Sure, he can claim he will get rid of all bots, but how? Does he have a plan, or is it just another empty promise to pretend to be the saviour of the world and make more money?
    Or will he be more sneaky, and demand lots of private information from you to link your account to your real identity in a manner that you can only have 1 account?
    Or will he make it a paid service, where you need to pay a decent amount of money for an account, so a spam bot account wouldn't be worth it.

      I don't think Elon is the best person for change. Considering the change he has brought already. Some are good like with Space X (to some degree 3D printing rockets is unsafe). But most are questionable at best. Like tesla cars are battery powered but, from what I've heard, you need to buy upgrades for the battery, which is software. They're also unsafe and turn the auto pilot off before an accident on purpose.
      Not only that but he lied about the Vegas loop, he kept downsizing the idea until it was nothing he promised ppl. Not to mention extremely unsafe without even fire exits.
      But other ideas are just horrible like the hyperloop, which for safety, economic, feasibility, and maintenence issues is a bad idea. If there is a leak while anyone riding it is dead, because they hit a wall of air. The leak would also take an extremely long amount of time to fix. And feasibly it's next to impossible, buying all that land to be able to go through would be extremely difficult and the cost would be exorbitant.
      The ideas he proposes are generally good looking as a concept but hardly realistic.

    I do agree with a lot of the points of the videos, in general Elon's offer (to me) comes off as an obvious PR/Marketting move: a lot of claims to get users' attention without much actual practical solution to the problems he mentions
    Here are a few additional thoughts:
    -One key point that makes the Open Source idea fall appart entirely is SECURITY. Making even part of Twitter's code openinly accessible is begging for people with bad intention to dig through it and find as many exploits as possible
    Not to mention that for someone who is so open about his hate of bot accounts, he would make the job of people making those bots infinitely easier, imagine being given the exact formula to get your content trending/more distributed
    -From a French perspective, the America-centric vision of internet's Free speech was always odd to me, as mentioned by X, there are a lot of different laws, and in fact France does have laws that openly ban hate speech, unlike the "Free speech absolutist" vision Musk and other fans of the US first amendment hold, yes debate is of course possible in France, but slander and hate isn't, it's not a constructive discussion when slurs etc. are used
    Knowing that Musk has been open about his support for Trump, one can easily guess what kind of "Free speech" would be promoted
    -I also agree with the Financing aspect, knowing that even the biggest tech companies (google, Facebook etc.) heavily rely on publicity, it is ludicrous to think any plan could entirely replace such income, just look at UA-cam.
    -An Edit button is indeed very dangerous on twitter if not handled properly, and again adds to my sentiment of PR campaign, with this being mentioned just because Musk knows people have asked for it, without any real thought.
    -Lastly I am always critical when Elon is described as smart because of SpaceX or Tesla, not only does he have his share of silly ideas (the underground Tesla Tunnel comes to mind, just build a subway), but more importantly I doubt that Musk actually did much in terms of pactical problem solving, sure he brought in the money for those projects, but the technical achievements are the results of the egineers, R&D departments and other such employees' hard work, it' cs not like every spaceX rocket was exclusively designed from start to finish by Musk like an exaggerated genius mathematician from a Hollywood movie

    just a quick thing about an edit button
    Edits alter RT's, notifies who RT'd the tweet about the edit (giving the option to take it down), puts a "this has been edited" tag on the tweet, and gives an "edit history" so we can see what it was before the edit.
    imo not a hard thing to implement, Facebook has done it.

    I really appreciate this video, and I appreciate the more granular approach to the different problems/challenges in the twitter takeover. However one important thing not mentioned is Musk's personal stake in all of this. On one hand, getting rid of spam bots is a great idea. On the other hand, Musk has a history where he tries to personally get rid of one twitter account which is a bot that tracks his plane. This brings some nuance to the discussion: does he want to get rid of spam bots, or just the bots he personally dislikes that are run by actual human beings?
    I've seen this thing before on tumblr, where they banned all NSFW content a few years back, because they claimed that would get rid of the spam bot problems. It turned out later that they got rid of NSFW content to appease advertisers and especially the apple play store. Whether getting rid of NSFW content was successful or even effective is another question, but it is important to ask who benefits from a claimed goal.

      That anonymity is a 2 way sword.
      Yes, they are anonymous and can say things without needing to fear the consequences.
      This means they can say things that can go against the perceived majority opinion without fearing actual backlash against them which could put their livelihood or their lives in danger.
      In Germany in the lead up to WWII, how many people actually disagreed with Hitler, but were too afraid to speak out for fear of being murdered?
      In China, how may people oppose so many acts of the government, but are too afraid to speak out?
      Even today, in allegedly free western societies, with the alleged anonymity of the internet, some people are still afraid to speak out on plenty of issues because they fear public backlash which could cost them their jobs, or actual threats to their lives.
      Instead we have people effectively forced to bow down to an oppressive regime of a large public mob.

      There's no realistic way in which a nation can fail to have free speech while guarenteeing that people are allowed to say those things which should be said. If free speech is not present, then the regulation of speech falls to some governing body, and the moment that body grows corrupt, you get some pretty serious problems.
      Having free speech allows people to say things they should not say, yes, but not having it allows people to force others not to say that which they should say. I would argue the latter is a far greater problem than the former, especially since not having free speech doesn't even guarentee that people can't say things they shouldn't say in the first place (in Nazi Germany, it was perfectly acceptable to say very bad, false things about those people who were eventually targeted in the holocaust).

    • @cencent2189

      What I'm saying is that free speech can't include bashing other ppl as it removes the intention of it in the first place. Another aspect that the internet has is that people don't have to listen and are more likely to want to be right instead of having a constructive conversation.

Having them adapt to us, is, at least for entertainment, actually really desirable. However, with that, one also gets the problematic side of medal, namely political filterbubbles and echo chambers. Removing the filter would make the platform uninteresting due to being flooded with too much content that is not filtered. Making the filter transparent would probably cause people abusing the system to promote scams or similar stuff.
    It's not that I dislike open source, but the filter has to be secret to some degree to work properly as far as I understand the situation.

    Preface: to be clear, this is not an attack against Xisuma. This is my opinions made from research on Musk and what I feel is missed in the discussion that Xisuma presents. This video shows signs of lots of research and thought put into it, as well as a large amount of effort extended to make the subject more approachable and understandable, something I myself lack both the platform and ability to do so.
    For a video discussing misinformation, I feel that there is a glaring large amount of information overlooked in this video. While the majority of the content shows the research and critical thinking put into the issues at hand, I feel like you missed a key aspect to consider when discussing the pending deal. That key aspect would be the credibility of Musk himself. You talk about his rhetoric being similar to that of a politician, and also mention the many promises he has publicly made should he acquire Twitter. However, every politician runs on a platform made of promises and how often do they fail to deliver on those promies? To truly look at things objectively, one needs to look into the credibility of the man making these promises and how often he has fulfilled past promises and the integrity of his word. Within merely minutes of research, I personally find his credibility lacking. He is more concerned about the image his is curating of himself than of the actual work he has done. He has rejected the term "investor" being used on his wikipedia page, claims false foundership of Tesla and PayPal, and retitled himself from Tesla CEO to Tesla Technoking. Then we must also consider the controversy that surrounds Musk. He has been called a sociopath by previous employees and associates, has spread misinformation about covid, defamed Vernon Unsworth by calling him a pedo for disagreeing with Musk's idea to use a mini sub to save stranded children and then paid $50,000 to a private investigator to "dig up dirt" on Unsworth, compared Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau to Hitler, stated the US government shouldn't provide subsidies to companies after receiving billions himself in that manner, made misogynistic tweets towards Senator Elizabeth Warren after she stated he should pay more in taxes, threated Tesla factory workings with their stock should they unionize, reopened a Tesla factory in violation of public health orders, runs a racist misogynistic company where sexual harrasment runs rampant and is referred to as a "modern day sweatshop," and has a record of firing people who disagree with him. From a business standpoint as well he has missed countless production deadlines for both Tesla and SpaceX.
    For all the smoke and mirrors, Musk is not the genius or inventor he tries to claim to be. He is solely a investment capitalist who makes his money not from his own inventions but from the inventions of others made possible by the wealth he was born into. He has never been and never will be a man of the people because the lifestyle he was born into and has led is an entirely different world than the 99.99% of all other people live. Solely considering his track record of how he communicates with those who disagree with him complete refutes his claims to being a free speech absolutist. While he does bring up good issues and problems that should be addressed, he is without a doubt not the individual with the capability to implement solutions to those problems.
    Believe me or not, do your own research and come to your own conclusions. These are things I feel were overlooked and quite relevant to this discussion.
