    One small correction: worker bees actually do have ovaries but the queen's pheromones suppress the development of the worker ovaries so as long as there's a queen, then the workers' ovaries are never used. However, if the hive is queenless for an extended period of time then the effect of the queen pheromones wears off and worker ovaries start producing eggs. This leads to a laying worker situation which is where the workers lay eggs but that's a problem since workers never mate so the eggs are unfertilized which means that they hatch out male drones (fertilized eggs are female workers). The hive soon becomes overrun with drones and since drones do nothing useful for the hive itself, the colony soon dies.

    You forgot to mention my favorite fact about bees!
    Every female bee can potentially lay eggs. Sometimes they even do so, that's a high offense against the entire colony. Their eggs will be killed off if found so they are mostly trying to hide them. There are special guard bees however that check on all the larvae and if one of them does not contain a certain type of pheromone that makes her smell like the other larvae this one is immediately killed and then there is almost and entire investigation process to find the worker who laid the egg. If this worker is found she is stung dead and removed from the hive to make sure the hive is not ruled by anarchy.
    God you gotta love those bees.

    • @AdaptiveReasoning
      @AdaptiveReasoning 8 років тому +189

      Finkel - Funk Yup! Unfertilized eggs will hatch into drones, which are freeloaders for the most part and this is why worker egg laying is a big no no. It's rare and something is usually very wrong with the worker bee's head, but it's a thing. They all have ovaries, so the video is a bit in error there.

      Draxis32 Yup, murder suicide if stung, but bees can push other bees out or pull them and once outside they can bite off their wings. I've seen the wing removal after summers end when my girls kick all the lazy boys out.

    • @unFayemous
      @unFayemous 8 років тому +94

      Draxis32 actually, not necessarily. The reason why bees die when they sting mammals is because their skin is sort of elastic, so they can't just rip through it. The skin will give and at the same time rip out the bees stinger. If they attack another insect though, they can rip right through that chitin exoskeleton and they have a good chance of surviving that.

    The new queen enters the throne room, closely watching her environment. The big crowd is silent, staring back at the interesting scene. The old queen is laughing meanicingly, then suddenly pulls out her stinger to attack the new queen. As she is older, she knows that her only chance of winning lies within the element of suprise, but the princess parries flawlessly, as they begin their duel. With marvellous speeds, they circle around each other, but the elder queen cant keep up. It was inevitable from the beginning: as the old queen dies with the stinger in her heart, she whisperes her final words ,,And so the cycle continues. Take care of my legacy, so that when you will be in my position, you can hand it on to the next in line" then as her last words fade away, she slowly decends onto the ground, until she doesnt move anymore. The new queen picks up the little crown and as she turns around, the crowd starts applauding: long live the hive

    Also, sometimes the bees can become unhappy with their current queen, when this happens, they take the eggs of the queen and builds queen cells for some of them, feeds them royal jelly and when the forst one is born, she will kill all the other queen larvae (her sisters) then hunt through the entire hive trying to find the queen togehter with the worker bees, she will then literally jump the old queen (her mother) and kill her with the help of the other bees

    Pretty nice video, one small correction and an interesting fact: --the bees don't wait for the queen to die before creating a replacement. When they sense she's getting old and slowing down in egg production, they will create many new special, larger cells and cultivate queens with the royal jelly as you described. Thus, when a new queen hatches, not only does she have to deal with the rest of her queen brood, but she then has to find the old queen and kill her too (usually succeeding). Thus, end of life for a queen is quite brutal, and Shakespearean. Also worth noting that the queen is the only honeybee whose stinger is straight (not barbed) and whose abdomen does not detach after stinging like most honeybees. This allows her to kill without dying, although no human has ever been stung by a honeybee queen despite deliberate agitation.

    This is a tale of destiny
    After the death of the leader, a new queen is sought after. Some of the meager children become privileged from birth to take the place of their foremothers
    They are fed with the highest quality nourishment to train them and see who, in a fight to the death, will succeed the throne and lead the people
    Sounds like a dystopian amiright

    Points that should have been clarified: The food that bees feed worker larva (the nectar, water, pollen combo) is called "bee bread" which is adorable and I'm sad it wasn't mentioned.
    Drones don't wait around to mate with "the" Queen (aka their mother), they wait around to mate with any possible new queens, either of their own hive, or from a nearby hive. Once a queen emerges and goes on a few mating flights, that's it, she's got enough sperm stored to last the rest of her egg-laying life.
    Think of a hive less as a collection of individuals and more of a single body that has mobile parts. Stop giving human traits to bees and their organization-they're only doing what their instincts drive them to do. There is no "hive mind," the queen doesn't order them (they are self organizing), the workers are not "oppressed" and the queen isn't in a favorable position either (she has to eat constantly to poop out eggs constantly, it's hard on her and she's basically an ovary).
    Egg-laying workers occur sometimes, but because they have never mated and only produce drones (all drones come from unfertilized eggs and are haploid clones of their mother) so it's not "cruelty" for the other workers to seek out and destroy eggs laid by egg-laying workers. Drones are a strain on the colony, they only consume and never gather food. They're the testes of the colony, existing to only spread the genes of the queen. The queen is already producing clones, the colony doesn't need a worker making more, so destroying foreign eggs is a way of managing the cost of supporting the drone population.

      I'm a beekeeper, so let me answer your question. No. The long answer is because the queens will fight until only one survives and then you have a hive of one bee. The other reason is that queens can't really feed themselves and require their assistants to feed them. This is the same with the drones (males). Weird fact about drones, during the months leading up to winter, the hive will take the drones and throw them out of the hive. This is to save on precious materials and keeping the hive warm during a cold winter.

      jordan605632 Basically how humans make new homes, ants choose a place to live, then start making it into a home, with rooms and stuff like that, they dig rooms for all the things like food and egg placing and anything really, then as there are more ants, there is a need for more room, and they expand, like us humans, i don't know the exact science, but i do know that much. And that i'm just too lazy to capitalize"i" by itself...

      When I got in arguments with people about the fact that females are the ones that collect pollen they always argue with me and sometimes they use the Bee Movie to try to prove me wrong and I look at them like they're stupid, because they are.

    1) will a normal bee eat Royal Jelly if you isolate it and provide it with only that 2) (if not) what happens if you force feed a normal bee royal jelly? 3) what happens if you deprive a queen of royal jelly? 4) (if it simply won't eat) what happens if you force feed it normal honey?

      Why don't you just Google it

      Well, google cant answer such a specific question

    • @Trey_-uc7lr
      @Trey_-uc7lr 7 років тому +2

      when you Google something results will come up, you can then click on the results so if you Google a specific question different articles will come up about that question and you could possibly find an answer there, never thought I would have to explain what Google does to somebody
