    The catcher didn't even argue the play. You know he knew it was a legit play and he fcked up. That's the tell tale sign right there.

    • @Korijenkins1414

      Because he knew he didn't tag him, and Bregman was still in the batter's box.

    • @TCUsouthpaw
      @TCUsouthpaw 6 років тому +10

      it wasn't even the catchers fault imo. The first baseman should have set up in foul territory not right over the base. by him standing right over the bag he blocked both his own line of sight and the catchers with bregman running down the line. He forced the only throw to be right over Bregman's shoulder meaning he wouldn't be able to see the ball until it passed the runner who was at that point 10 feet from the bag. I know these guys are pros but I played first base for years and thats day one stuff in HS baseball...

    • @811chelseafc
      @811chelseafc 6 років тому +8

      Ummm I think you need to watch the replays again because he does set up in foul territory. His right foot is on the bag and his whole body is in foul territory and he's shading his glove there. Also, its definitely Lucroy's fault for dropping the ball in the first place.

      I mean, it did bounce off the back of Bregman's helmet, so it's tough to blame the first baseman for that.

      Andrew B, exactly right. That is one thing I like about these Astros players, if they see a loophole or the other team messes up the Astros will jump on it in a heartbeat and use it for their advantage. Yes! I had noticed this about this team! And they've got it down to an art. I just love their base running skills, it gves me goosebumps to see them hustling running around those bases. I am in love with this Astros team!! (Not literally, but you know what I mean) They are amazing and one of a kind! Gotta love them!

    May be hard to see at first but this is a perfect example of fundamentals being the difference in a game. Catcher should have put the ball in his glove with two hands on the ball for the tag. Plus, Bregman never quit on the play. He didnt mope and drag and concede the tag after a terrible swing. He avoided the tag, then ran hard to first.

Or the horrid 2nd half of the 2014 season when they went from being the best team in baseball to barely good enough to qualify for the ill-conceived wild card game. That July 10th game was supposed to be over after 8.5 innings. If anything, it showed the Astros and baseball in general how much the A's have improved and that the fight in the team was for real.

    Mental error too... he could have, earlier in the play, just run into the batter and got an interference call. Then he missed the tag, then he dropped the ball, then he threw the ball away... er, off the batter's head... so the ball hit the ground, then the catcher touched the ball and threw it at the batter, off of the batter, off of the umpire, picked it up, then threw the ball off the batter and past the first baseman (so, the error is on the catcher... is there a second one for the throw that allowed the runner to advance home... and was the ball catchable at first...

    • @gfox9295
      @gfox9295 6 років тому +1

      The ball hitting off the umpire seemed like good luck as he got the ball back sooner... but actually, if the umpire hadn't been standing right there, the catcher would have had to go a few feet to the side (towards the dugout, kinda) to get that ball, and then the throw to first wouldn't have hit off the runner's helmet.
      Sure, at that point the runner might have been safe anyway, but at least the 1st baseman would have the ball and they could have prevented the runner from 3rd scoring.
      What a series of events.

    • @gcclassicslover7488
      @gcclassicslover7488 6 років тому +1

      nacoran My question is, is that not umpire interference? Usually if the ball hits the umpire, it’s a dead ball, and all runners advance a base. But, that might only be immediately after the ball is hit. Not entirely sure.

    • @nacoran
      @nacoran 6 років тому +1

      Batted balls or if he interferes with a pickoff. It looks like if it hits the ump because of the fielder misplaying it it's on the fielder.
      www.closecallsports.com/2012/07/rules-200-509bf-umpire-interference.html
      But yeah, in all my years of watching baseball I've only seen a couple umpire interferences. I sort of assumed that because it was off the fielder it wasn't interference, but I had to look up the rule. I'm guessing if the rule wasn't that way fielders would just throw the ball at umpires whenever they couldn't make the play. Whenever you run into obscure rules there is usually a logical reason the rule has to be that way to prevent someone from exploiting it!

Yes, in non-save situations this year he has been dreadful, but until this game, in save situations, he had ben crystal clear perfect 12/12 saves with a 0.00 ERA. I had previously defended Giles, especially when we didn't score, but he had zero game plan. He just slung stuff to the plate. No deception, no movement either in ball flight or location. If he threw at 105 every pitch, that might work. Major leaguers will figure out 97 coming straight down the middle, even on an edge.

      John Brattan mark chana doesn't play first base I just saw he was because Olson was taken out of the game because he is so slow.so nick martini came in then mark chana played first

      Actually, I thought he was standing mostly in foul territory with the other foot on first. Lucroy just completed his bad 11th by throwing it at the back of Bregman's head. (I'm an Astros fan by the way)

      Lucroy threw at the base rather than to one of the sides and it glanced off Bregman's helmet.

    First baseman should have set up in foul territory to give Lucroy a throwing lane instead of forcing the throw over Bregman's shoulder. Fault goes to the first baseman in my opinion.

    Umpire miisyakes:
    1st base umpire *SHOULD* have ruled the batter out of the baseline since he took too long getting to first, 3rd base umpire forgot to signal to the Home plate umpire that the runner at 2nd was out for not stopping at 3rd. *BPTH* of those should have been penalized with a double play and 2 runs off the board, thus, by rule the final score *SHO:D* have been 5-3 Oakland.

    This is the wrong call. Bregman should have been called out of the baseline. While avoiding the tag he travels "Behind" home plate toward 3rd base, and is no longer in the baseline.
    Also, if I remember correctly, while advancing toward first base from home plate you are not allowed to move backwards to avoid a tag. It is the only base you are compelled to advance forward no matter what. You can stop, or run forward, but you cannot run backward to avoid a tag.

      This is all kinds of wrong. In baseball, you are able to retreat backwards from 1st to home. This assumes that he has not legally acquired 1st base and that he doesn't touch home plate on the retreat. He did not touch 1st and did not touch home, and is therefore allowed to retreat to avoid the tag assuming he doesn't veer more than 3 feet to either side. He definitely does not veer more than 3 feet, so he's not out of the basepath. Him being safe was completely correct. For reference, the no retreat to avoid the tag is a softball rule and not a baseball rule.
