Bog Filtration is how ponds keep clean in the natural world! Bring this "technology" to your backyard pond. The concept is the vessel, in this case, the central tall planter pot (very durable rubber), is filled with pea gravel and when the water sucked in from the pump in the pond circulates through it and the plants' roots growing in it, it acts as a filter. Add fish to the pond, and the fish droppings act as fertilizer to the plants!
A diagram of the way the Bog works, is included at minute 2:51.
This was a project I did in my backyard in Las Vegas. Over 5 years, I did replace the 470gph pump feeding the bog numerous times, but that was just bad manufacturing, not because the pump was over-worked. I did have issues with green "string algae" in the Spring, as the weather warmed up, but I would remove it manually and then also added a very small amount of "Oxine" to keep it at bay. If you have fish, be sure to add a water conditioner to remove the chlorine from the tap water when refilling the pond. The evaporation in the summer in this pond was quite substantial and needed topping up often.
I had to replace the liner once as the water in Las Vegas is VERY hard with a lot of calcium and lime deposits that would collect on the folds and eventually stiffened the liner so much it began to leak. Yes, I had to disassemble the entire pond and reassemble it, rocks and all!
The Dwarf Umbrella Palm, was also very hardy, and its roots filled the bog pot completely. So, once over the 5 years, I did empty the entire contents of pea gravel, split up the roots and planted them in other pots that I placed in the pond! In the winter, the palm dries up and I prune it to nothing. In the spring it grows back.

Finally! A simple diagram drawn with an actual pencil explaining the entire (rather simple)process. I'm in no way a simple person but I cannot believe how confusing some videos are...too many unnecessary explainations...without divulging the very basic actions and materials needed.
    Thank you so much!

JUST A GREAT VIDEO !! you made it look simple, something that sounded more complicated to me before. I have a couple other ponds already but can't wait to sort of "copy" yours in my backyard. Thank you for posting this !

Hi and thanks for this video! Great to see how the plants grew over the years. What did you use to seal the pvc outflow pipe?

I have a little pond with five goldfish (comets). Filtration is by a diy prefilter with soonge material to filter out the solids and a big filter with s few plants. I was planning to get the prefilter out ’cause it is hard to open and close again for cleaning out. My question is, what about the solids from fishpooh etc in your pond? Hoe do you clean those out?

Did you plant the dwarf umbrella directly in the pea gravel or did you place it in a pot with soil and then into pea gravel? I just got one and want to grow mine as big as yours!
