i’m 16, and i very recently found myself speaking online to a man who was 20 despite knowing full well it was inappropriate. we’d both acknowledged it was inappropriate. i’ve consumed content like this for years and considered myself aware of what grooming and internet safety was all about, and even in the midst of it said to a friend “i’d like to think i’d know better” but as a teenager, the enjoyment that comes out of feeling appreciated and receiving validation very much overrides what i would have previously thought was common sense. It is so easy to get caught up in something like that. I spoke to him for about a week before he got upset at me for something and i snapped out of it like a trance, and said to him that while I shouldn’t have let it go on knowing better, he most certainly shouldn’t have initiated what he had, let alone let it develop. thank god I think I’m a lesbian after all and had the disconnect that allowed me to snap out of it like I did, and that I live so far away, because god knows how it would have went otherwise. All this is to say that a potential victim saying ‘nooooo ofc he didn’t groom me’ means fuck all. ofc we think these are good people treating us well. thats what they want us to think.
