  • A survey by TPN Credit Bureau has found that there is an increase in educators with criminal records. The study also revealed that educators don't declare their criminal convictions when applying for work. This comes at the back of a new policy introduced in 2019 that states that teachers need to submit their police clearance certificates when registering with the educators' council.
Legal Counsel at TPN Credit Bureau, Ashleigh Laurent and Ethics Manager at the South African educators' council, George Moroasui unpack this.

How will this be fixed when some people employed do not have proper documentation , go to schools in Jhb CBD you will see. Most do not even have documentation to be in this country then how can the criminal records be checked. The employer department of education is the biggest problem in this case not the educators who need the job to get the salary.
