    In Linden - a small Johannesburg suburb - Clement Tebruggo has become a familiar figure. He often spends his days queuing at a nearby church for a plate of food. Linden is one of the few communities that offers sanctuary to homeless people, providing them with a place of safety and regular meals. Hundreds of people who find themselves living on handouts now flock to this neighbourhood and, for some residents, it’s a major problem. In surrounding suburbs, the influx of homeless people has seen a rise in crime and sometimes abandoned buildings are taken over and transformed into informal settlements. As the numbers spike throughout the country, Carte Blanche asks how the challenge of homelessness should be confronted.

    If people could comprehend the amount of money that the ANC has looted since they came into power they would realise that we aren't a poor nation, but actually an extremely wealthy nation with more than enough resources (both financial and human) to solve the problems we face. Its just that those resources are constantly mismanaged, stolen, abused or simply ignored.

      @NoneNoneNonesence 16 днів тому

      It’s not leadership that’s the problem…….. it’s people, it’s not being able to pay rent/food/health. It’s the decision to move to areas where they perceive things are better and when they get there they find that what they perceived was already taken and there was nothing left for them. Their only option is - keep moving on - live in your car - buy a tent and join the other hopefuls. When poverty walks in the door - love flies out the window. GBV alcohol drugs are another reason people up and go.

    What I have picked up in the video is that the people living in the area are reclaimers “waste pickers”, drug addicts, and old people. Here is what I think since reclaimers are helping in a way of collecting reusable resources, the community should pay them some money to clean the area all the time since they are not well paid in that case this will encourage others who are unemployed to work as reclaimers and find better places to live than occupying urban spaces. Secondly, the drug addicts, this one is a very tough one but some addicts are not there willingly, maybe if the NGOs can come in and help those who want to recover by taking them to rehabilitation facilities reducing the number of addicts in the area, and since I saw a building that looks like it is abandoned it could be turned into a home where churches go to to feed the homeless and where they live. Lastly, old people could be taken to old age homes with the help from the government and the law should not negotiate with the dwellers when such measures are being taken because it is unacceptable to see such beautiful spaces turning into dumping sites and being degraded.

    • @marleneclough3173
      @marleneclough3173 17 днів тому +5

      Sadly all those things are expensive and impossible for the unemployed there are no free old age homes or rehabs and government ones have waiting lists forever. Everything costs today the cost of living is unbearable thanks to all the ANC looting and tenderpreneurs who have billions where others have very little.

    This is heartbreak 💔 all we can do is to pray that someday things change. I understand a child who lost the parents and don't know the relatives if they stay in the street but others i really don't understand. You find very young people on street and old people. If you are born in SA you have rural area home why not go back if things are not working out. All those people staying in informal settlements in December they go home why dont you do so if things don't work. I would really like to understand their mindset because you can't put measures in place if you understand people's mindset. Not all us we meant to be rich or live in cities. You can live a functional life in rural areas. This is really disappointing. These politicians are really annoying not even one party deserve my vote even worse ANC. This issue should be a priority.

Truth needs to be told with these sharks and people sleeping in the parks it's mostly people who came illegally from foreign countries and our ANC is responsible for that

Where are the jobs that the government are creating.... ? Ones that are non-corrupt positions and stable secure positions. There are many factors that play a role in joblessness but I truly feel that some factors play a bigger role than others like the government..... Some people turn to drugs as a way to cope with their situation thus one should focus on the main root causes.....

    How many informal settlements south of jhb vs north of jhb ? So many areas south of jhb formerly from the apartheid group areas act are worse than this and surrounded by this but no reporting on it , no green spaces,crime,vagrants,smoke pollution,noise pollution,poor service delivery ,terrible roads etc. No initiative or action by gov and those in positions counselors,premiers,mayors etc.to improve it , massively neglected, so naturally it just gets worse , amazing that this issue spread so far north of jhb though, its just like the electricity issues which started south of jhb 10-15 years ago, illegal connections,stolen cables etc. eventually entire jhb got affected just have to see city power/eskom ; jhb water social media updates and some use to think only south of jhb got electricity issues . South of jhb almost every vacant land is occupied or in the process of occupation regardless of the impact of existing surburbs government has lost control and doesnt care citizens just have to endure or move if they can afford it
