Doug says: "This [Moog] instrument, owned by Bruce Hatch, had nine oscillators, three envelope generators, two sequencers each with 24 note positions. I ran it all through one high/low pass filter controlled by a ribbon controller. The keyboard had its own controller with 60 knobs, a knob for each of the 60 notes, because any change in temperature would cause the pitch of the oscillators to shift. I tuned the intervals on the keyboard every time I played. All the music from that period was performed live, no overdubbing. It was a very exciting time for exploration and innovation. 'All things manifest in waveforms,' was my opening statement when I lectured at schools and universities. The excerpts in this piece are all taken from live performance."
Doug McKechnie is a producer, composer, and performer, born in Berkeley, CA. Doug played throughout the late 1960s in the San Francisco Bay Area, including at the famous Altamont concert with the Rolling Stones, and he's in the "Gimme Shelter" movie performing on the Moog on stage. One of the photos in this slide show is at Altamont.
Doug studied theater, film, photography and communications at San Francisco State and began performing with one of the first Moog Synthesizers in the late '60s. He has created music for theater, dance, film and television, been nominated for Emmys and Oscars under the aegis of Soundtracks, a company he created in the mid '70s. He created the San Francisco Synthesizer Ensemble in the early '80s and wrote and produced an annual television variety show for two decades beginning in 1990. Currently he offers professional photography services and continues his musical endeavors.
He started the San Francisco Synthesizer Ensemble in 1982. The Ensemble has just released "A Day In The Life Of The Golden Gate Bridge" - a new piece of music using only the sounds of the Bridge. Check it out on iTunes: tinyurl.com/cgj...

I have seen GIMME SHELTER many times and always noticed the brief shot of the Moog synthesizer. I have always wondered which band used it. Neither the Stones nor Santana nor CSNY nor Flying Burrito Bros used a moog in their live sets. Now I'm thinking that Doug might have performed it to the crowd between acts. Perhaps the enchanting sounds of the moog synthesizer helped soothe the ultra rowdy crowd.
